A while ago, I posted about pros and cons about driving or taking the train...my boyfriend and I have decided to drive! We are driving from Philadelphia, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for us! Also, if anyone has stayed in a hotel around NC/SC by 95 (we figure we can get there in a day) that isn't too $$$, please let me know! Thanks ahead of time! princess:

We are straight through drivers (even when we lived in MD). We buy new cd's for the trip and promise ourselves we won't listen to them until certain points in the drive. When we start feeling tired we pop in a comedy CD (Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvall are our favs) and we get to laughing so hard we get "refreshed".

We eat light (snacks mostly). We pit stop in one stop: either a Flying J (gas, bathroom and drinks/snacks) or a gas station next to a fastfood place (gas, bathroom & drink refills/snack at fast food place). Also--the rule is you HAVE to get out of the car even if you don't have to "go" when we stop. Just walking around for 5 - 10 minutes is a nice break.

We also play games: our fav is the geography game: first person names a geographical place (city, town, county, state, country, river, etc.). Next person has to name a geographical spot that starts with the last letter of the previous person's place (i..e I say Maryland--my son names a place that starts with D (Delaware--DH then names a place that starts with E and so on)

We also will stop along the way if something looks interesting to visit (my choice is outlet malls--haha) but you'll see South of the Border (counting the number of SOTB signs is fun---when we used to make the drive down 95 we started with a stash of quarters and whoever spotted a sign first got a quarter!)

While I am not an overly paranoid person, traveling up and down the highways (often alone) I have developed habits:
Just for "safety": I very rarely stop at rest centers (esp. at night). You can't be sure there will be other drivers around and while I haven't heard many horror stories lately when I first got my license many years ago there was a rash of murders/robberies at rest areas. When gasing the car I always use the same credit card/debit card and pay at the pumps (this sounds weird but it does leave a trail of where you have been just in case that's information that may prove helpful if people need to look for you). I also gas up with with my trunk facing the store portion of the station--I don't have a front tag on my car so this increases the odds that people will see my tag coming/going from the store or video surveillance will capture it (although many gas stations have video surveillance--you can't always be sure which ones do). I also always try to park in the middle--so the people in the store can see me--not on the ends--especially when there are many rows of pumps. When stopping at fast food places I always park as close to the door as possible--not in the far reaches of the parking lot. I usually call home or someone where I am travelling to and let them know where I'm at (this also helps if I am alone and tired--talking perks me up--and boy can I talk!).

It's horrible to think about when you're planning a Disney trip, but those were actually very good safety tips. I'd never given a second thought to stopping at rest stops in the past, but just last year in our state (MA) a woman stopped at a rest stop off of the highway and went into a Burger King restroom, where she was murdered. The person who stabbed her turned out to be a Burger King employee who followed her into the ladies room!

The trial was just held recently, so this is still fresh in my mind. This was a well-lit rest stop visible from the highway, one where I've stopped frequently myself. Again, it's horrible to think about, but you never can be too careful, especially if you're travelling by yourself or with children.

Thank you much for the great safety tips! It does make it sad when you have to think about that when planning a disney trip, but you do have to be safe! Thanks again!

We drove down to Florida from Philly. We left Philly at 9:30 am and arrived in Santee, South Carolina, which is about an hour's drive from the Georgia border, at 7:30 pm. After researching different hotels and seeking advice from people on the disboard we decided to stay at a hotel called Clark's Inn which was clean and affordable at around $60 a night and is right off of I95. Their website is www.clarksinnandrestaurant.com but it does not seem to be working. Here is some info on the hotel:
Clark's Inn 114 Bradford Boulevard, Santee, SC 29142, 803-854-2141, All of the comforts of home are provided at this lovely inn that is decorated in a traditional bed and breakfast style and offers spacious king deluxe guest rooms and luxurious suites. A full service restaurant is on site, as well as an outdoor garden pool and guest laundry facilities. Phone: 803-854-2141 For Reservations: 1-800-531-9658

After spending the night at the Clark's Inn we left there at 6 am arrived at our hotel in Disneyworld, The Wilderness Lodge, at noon. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at g.schaller@verizon.net

this place looks really nice do you know how far from Hardeeville SC it is ( where we were planning on stopping for the night) i'm thinking it must be close cause our second day from there was a little over 5 hrs.
thanks

Not reallys sure where that is. Clark's Inn was directly off I95 and I highly recommend it. There are several other hotels right there in that area but I didn't want to chance staying at any place that wasn't recommended. I did that on a previous trip and went to 3 different hotels before we found a clean room! You never know what you're gonna get. There was a Cracker Barrel which is a favorite of ours and it was about 2 blocks away from the hotel. Clark's Inn has a restaurant but we chose Cracker Barrel instead. Hope this info helps.

this is getting better and better as I have a CG for a free meal at Cracker Barrel I was going to use on the way down! thanks for the recommendation as we have had the same problems with hotels and after a long drive i don't like any "surprises" along those lines.

We always stop in Santee, SC at the Holiday Inn! It is very nice, clean and newly renovated! We usually pay $50-$60/night(AAA Discount). Also, Hardeeville is about an hour past Santee!

past as in closer to WDW or is it further north than 77( I guess unless it's rt.26 can't tell from the directions I have in front of me) where it intersects with 95? sounds nice but not for an extra 2 hr drive!

thanks I added this to my already bulging disney folder!

Melann:
We live in Glen Rock Pa. (S. of York). Usually leave at 4:00 AM to beat the DC nightmare (and that's my one tip--whatever you do, avoid the DC rush hour). BY 5:00 PM we are all the way to Brunswick Ga. We stop for a full breakfast on the way, as well as stops at rest stops along the way, and for gas.
Next day, it's only 4 1/2 hours to WDW.

If you decide not to go that far, I can recommend the Best Western in Santee. THis last trip we left later in the day (thanks to Isabelle) and got only down to Santee. Just pulled in to the BW and found it neat and clean.

Hey Uncle R....

From York County also. Used to teach at Susquehannock. Also a DVC member. It surely is a small world...

Hey Uncleromulus - we are driving from about an 1 1/2 west of Harrisburg next Thursday - We are planning on leaving around 3AM - is it reasonable to think that we could get to Savannah, GA by early evening????

I know this question was for Uncleromulus, but you will absolutely arrive at Savannah by early evening!

We usually like to just drive until we can't no more. So I print coupons from www.roomsavers.com and use them. They are usually only good w/ walk-ins. But I have saved some siginificant money this way. This way we can stop when we want.

Aspiring Cindy has already answered--I think Savannah by early evening is no problem. Brunswick is even farther S. than Savannah, and we're always there NLT than 5:00--once in awhile even a bit earlier.
