Tipping. Why do I feel guilty?

I am at a hotel. Pizza was $19.54, delivery charge $5. So I tipped $4 on the original pizza price. The guy says " Wow, thanks" like I did not tip enough. Did I? BTW, currently in Ohio.

I think you tipped enough considering the delivery charge of $5 around here pizza places only charge $1 for delivery

Are you positive he meant it in a sarcastic way? That's still 15% on the total (including delivery charge) so not horrible. I typically tip 20% on the total (including fees) but I wouldn't think that 15% would be considered little enough to solicit a rude response.

We got that response the last time we ordered pizza in a hotel, but I think the kid that delivered it was actually thankful. I think a lot of people don't tip the pizza guy or just give him a buck, especially when there is a delivery charge. He may have actually been thankful that you tipped him at all.

I hope that wasn't sarcastic lol, I think you tipped enough.

Last time I ordered pizza was at Disney; the guy seemed in a rush although he did bring it right over to me sitting in the hotel cafe area so that was really nice. I gave him the money and he's like "keep the change" while nodding his head yes, smiling really big, and walking away! I said yeah before I could even think about how much I had given him and he did this big cheesy grin. I thought it was hilarious because he said it more as a statement rather than a question and I can't even imagine the look on his face if I would've said no lmbo.

Thats more than I would tip and I live in Ohio.

I probably would have handed him $30 and said "keep the change". But that's because I wouldn't want to have the delivery guy fumbling for change while my pizza got cold! :rotfl:

I see nothing wrong with the amount that you tipped. My guess is that PPs are correct. It wasn't sarcasm but probably more like surprise. A lot of people don't tip when there is a delivery charge. I guess they think that the delivery guys gets that money.

The pizza was $20 you tipped $4. That's 20% I wouldn't even include the delivery charge in the total.

I sometimes ask the guy how much of the delivery fee they get. It varies from none of it to most of it. I do adjust tip based on that and the fact that we live pretty far out and almost out of the delivery range.

I felt I tipped enough but he looked at me lke I was cheap. We are talking Pizza Hut $10 pizza and wings, $19.34. No coupon. I'll give it a rest but I do not like to feel I stiffed the delivery guy.

Here the drivers do not get any of the fee, it says so when you place an order online anyhow. But the fee here is also only about $2, no the $5 the OP paid.

OP, we give a standard $5 for pizza delivery. I don't think $4 is cheap at all.

I tip a minimum of $5. So, in my opinion, you were a bit low but not horrible.

Most places around here the driver does not get any of the delivery charge and the few who do only get a tiny amount.

If you really, really feel guilty, then call the pizza place, explain the situation and arrange to give the delivery person and give some more money. If you don't, then you mustn't really feel THAT guilty.

I'd let it go, myself.

I only tip a dollar or two. I'm not sure why you would need to tip any more than that.

DH is a former Marine and recent college graduate... The only job he could find - delivering pizza! I am hoping that was truly not meant to be mean, but as a thank you... As DH is greatful for all tips. Even though he gets a very small stipend on each delivery he makes, if his manager makes him take 2 deliveries, he still only gets the one fee. (not the delivery fee, a much smaller one). He is thankful for all tips - and I know $4 would have been awesome! Lol! He goes to some places and they argue with him about how much the pizza is... They tell him "Well, I was told $10 on the phone!" (for 4 pizzas!!) and then be nasty with him when he tells them that is not the correct total. Then on top of that, of course, they stiff him. I like to think the best in people; you shouldn't feel guilty! That was just the right amount, I think. If someone delivers to my house and is super nice, and even earlier than anticipated I tip about $5/$6. I now know, the wear and tear on a vehicle, they are times the instant they go out the door, fight traffic and dogs... All kinds of things I never thought of!! Especially now with DH doing this... I have come to realize they really count on that tip money. :)

I'm starting to feel bad about how I tip pizza delivery folks now! I'm usually a really good tipper and will tax 20% minimum, after taxes (and where I live we have a 10% restaurant tax) and I usually round up on the total and the tip so that I'm not trying to figure out change. Exceptions being really, really bad service - but I apply this exception rarely, which makes my DH mad.

Usually with pizza delivery I give $3.00 - $4.00 regardless the cost. We typically end up with $35 orders because we add extra toppings and breadsticks, plus the delivery fee. $7.00 seems like a lot for a tip! If I order pizza and breadsticks that costs $10 or pizza and breadsticks for $30 it's still only 2 items being delivered. If my total was $10 I'd give $3.00 - $4.00 same as if my order has extra pepperoni, cheese, and sausage that makes the cost $20. It's still the same number of items that the person is bringing up to me.

I thought this was good tipping because I know how hard it is to live on tips (was a former waitress). I never knew it was 20% on the total for pizza delivery. I even asked a former pizza delivery person what the rule of thumb was and she said she thinks $1.00 for every item being delivered was what she usually got.
