Tipping the Mousekeeping

Aren't these the people that pick up your dirty towels, change your sheets, vacuum your crumbs, throw your garbage away, wipe the toothpaste off your counter and mirror? I have a family of 5 and I know what 5 people do to bathrooms and floors.....I guess I feel like it's a little different than the person giving me ice cream at a counter or pointing me to the empty seats on a ride.

Personally - We will plan on tipping mousekeeping...happily....animal towels or not.

P.S. We're staying at the Suites at the DSMu - so that's TWO bathrooms to clean!!

:-)

i would tip 2-5 dollars a day, depending on the job they did. Havent had much of a problem yet, except the room i had at the all star sports had not really been dusted in a very long time. Other than that, i would tip em. I believe housekeeping only makes minimum wage, so they count on their tips.

Tipping is an individual's choice.

Yes, you are right. It should not be an "obligation" otherwise it is not really a tip but a part of the price.
I think good service is worth a tip and better service is worth more!
But what about service that is just not right?
Do you leave a tip then?

Sorry if someone already commented on that. I might have missed something.

This is a great question on service in general. If something is not right or not up to par then please let the person or management know. We cannot fix the problem if you don't tell us what it is or if there is one. I would much rather rectify the problem and have a guest leave happy-then them leave mad. As far as the tips and a room being less than satisfactory- call down to housekeeping and let them know of the situation. If the problem is fixed-I personally would see no reason to not tip. If the situation is not fixed then I see no reason to tip for bad service in any venue.

:thumbsup2 Just my point I was making, but this conversation will be endless with so many strong opinions.... That's just what it is, a personal choice that is yours to make and no one else's.

I just want folks to realize one thing. Everybodys' needs and idea of what is satisfactory service is different.

Many guests are very middle of the road. They want basic things and are happy with a standard level of service.

Some people have special needs which we understand when they are conveyed to us and we do our best to accommodate them.

And some guests treat service positions as if slavery was never abolished. They think they are the only person in the universe, that you are taking care of, and that you know their every whim and want. They make life miserable and are never happy no matter what is done for them.

And in the middle of this all is the service industry full of people who work hard to provide good service to everyone. It's not as easy as it seems :confused3 .

I see these people everyday where I work, and they are the ones I refuse to go out of my way for.
They get what is required and no more than that.

Unfortunately therein lies the problem and illustrates how this differs from tipping waitstaff. Someone's mousekeeper can be different from day to day. The person that did the work for a particular day isn't necessarily the person receiving the tip the next day. I'm really tipping in advance.

Fortunately in all my stays, I've never had a dirty room, so I just tip everyday and hope that the person getting my tip that day deserves it and so far it's always worked out.

I imagine I would just let a one day problem slide; anyone can have a bad day. Perhaps they have a migraine or they were up all night with sick children. I'm not going to penalize someone on just one off performance, especially since it may not even be the same person. If it happened more than that, I'd be on the phone to mousekeeping management to get it corrected, but that situation has never come up for me. So far my mousekeepers have earned every cent.

Yes, my post was about service in general not mousekeeping. I should stay on the specific topic! LOL! We had a great experience in 2000 at P.O. with cleaning.
I tip any hotel housekeeping on the pillow that day.

This thread is no longer about resort planning but a debate on tipping. Say goodbye to this round of should I tip.

Housekeeping is a non-tipped position - they earn the same as other cast members in the park, retail assistants, ordinary cast members, cleaners - rest room and park cleaners, etc. Why do we feel compelled to press money into the palms of housekeepers and not these other Disney employees who earn the same money and make our stay equally magical.

I'm usually hit or miss on tipping for mousekeeping too. But when we stay in FW cabins, there is a bit more to do - dishes, grills, etc. I have no qualms about leaving last nights dishes in the sink for them to clean. (DH differs on this, but that's another story.) So, DD and I are going there for 11 days in Feb. and I've budgeted about $70 for mousekeeping tips.

But I LOVE the idea of randomly going up to other cast members with an envelope similar to my mousekeeping ones and surprising them with a tip! For instance, at MK I always admire the groundskeeping staff and how (usually) clean the grounds are - guests are rude and drop litter everywhere! They are usually right on top of it. I've always wanted to approach them and thank them for a job well done, for making my day a bit more magical. But I felt kind of silly. I certainly won't now! I'm going to make sure that I thank them AND hand them an envelope with a tip! Disney has poured magic into my life year after year, since I was 4. And now they are doing it for my DD.

Time to pay it forward. :flower3:

My last comment on this helpful thread is that before I came to the Disboards many years ago, I had no idea housekeeping was tipped anywhere, at any hotel. I have learnt a lot and this is good!

We base our tip on our room size usually.

Regular Room - $5.00 daily
1BR - $7.00 daily
2 BR - $10.00 daily
GV - $15.00 daily
