Tipping Question/Opinion

I go to a brewery that is self service. You get a card at the counter that tracks how much beer your pour and are charged per ounce. If you want food you can order from the counter or via their online system. When you are done you go back to the counter and pay for whatever you drank & ate. How would you tip in this situation?

Maybe 10%, assuming there’s servers who bring the food to your table and maybe check with you occasionally.

Food runners bring the food. No one checks on you. If you need anything you have to get up to ask the person at the counter.

I've been to places like this before and I don't tip. You serve your own drinks and at least for the ones I've been to, there is either no food or you get snacks from a vending machine. It's akin to going to a fast food/quick service place.

Does the place accept cash or only credit/debit cards via a payment terminal?

Many of those i-pad type devices in places like that “suggest” gratuity amounts and it seems to be easier to submit to their extortion than to opt out.

Many sports stadiums and arenas have those systems, even in 100% self service kiosk locations.

Anyway, in this case, I’d probably tip since a food runner delivers to your table.

Would only consider tipping the person who brings you the food and if they don't do anything else a normal waiter/waitress does would be definitely less than 15%. Many of those self-serve kiosks are annoying since each is formatted differently and trying to bypass the tip screen is often confusing (perhaps on purpose).

If there are runners, I definitely tip. Not as much as a true server, but something.

This is my paranoia speaking, but there are places like Papa John's and a few local places with online ordering portals that have a tip section when you order online for pickup. While I'd normally tip for delivery, pickup is kind of odd. Still, they can see if you tip or not, so I can't help but wonder if I'll be coming home with a "sneezer" if I don't tip some on a pickup.

They swipe a credit card when you get your drink card. You can pay with that or pay with cash at the end. I’ve never encountered a tip screen that didn’t have a no tip or custom tip option.

They don’t really bus they tables unless some leaves it in the table. It is set up for you to bus the table yourself.

I’m not sure how one would tip the food runner (directly). I assume that tips are split between the counter person and hopefully the food runner as well.

Now you've just added a new realm to my phobias. :)

I'm sorry! I know they notice because I've been thanked several times when I've arrived for pickup. During the years where I worked on a Master's, I had a side job at a restaurant in a traditionally non-tipped role. Periodically, I would be tipped just because some people are super generous. I never expected it though and never would have dreamed of tampering with someone's order. Now though, they know there's a prompt for it, which sort of creates this sense of forced entitlement and anger if it's not met.

Definitely tipping the next time I order pizza! :)

If mess is left at the table, I’ll tip $1 per person or $5 if there was over the top service & engagement.

It doesn't seem like the place is set up for tipping so I probably wouldn't. I would go out of my way to leave a favorable review on Yelp/social media.
