Tipping question for self-serve places

My DD got a job at a local pizza place last month and to be honest, its been an eye opener for us. They have a few tables that they wait on and then have a carry-out business too. She doesn't make minimum wage and she gets tips on most of the tables she waits on. What surprised us was how many people add tips onto their carry-out orders. We never did. I wonder now if many people who order carry-out from this place know the girls don't make minimum wage is why they also tip on carry-out.

FWIW, shes in HS and they are really good about working around her school activities so not making minimum wage isn't a deal breaker for her. She makes pretty good tip money.

In these situations, the only reason to tip would be due to service beyond the ordinary. If they described the flavors, helped you use the machine, or something beyond the ordinarily expected service, then I would tip. If they just take payment, they get no tip.

Likewise, I don't tip for pick-up orders unless they go through the order and confirm that everything is acceptable and exactly the way it was ordered. That is an extra service that I will gladly tip for. Just handing me a bag is not extra.

But that is what they are supposed to do. They are hired to keep the bar stocked and cleaned and to help customers. The place that doesn't do that needs to hire new employees because they aren't doing their job.

Sounds great.....In theory.

Why does every.single.thread on the Dis that asks for someones OPINION HAVE to turn into a debate?

Can't anyone simply state what they do without being told why or why not they are doing it wrong?

I always forget that a tipping question on the Budget Board, will ALWAYS be filled with reasons NOT to tip.

This will be the last time I forget.

Why so upset that a few of us disagree with what you said? I can't state my OPINION on what you said? Why should I tip on a "service" that someone gets PAID to perform? ANY restaurant I go to, if it's dirty I will say something to management, not just a froyo place, I do the same thing at any salad bar/buffet as well. It really isn't that hard to see that a dirty froyo toppings bar is not being maintained and if I was the owner/manager of that location I would WANT TO KNOW about it.
I didn't say you did anything wrong by tipping, I simply disagreed with your reason for doing it, IN MY OPINION that's not a good reason to tip. I would tip if the employee did something above and beyond, since that has yet to happen I have yet to tip at a froyo place. :) Well, beyond dropping some loose change into the "tip" cup they sit on the counter. :)
