At restaurants we always tip, however tonight we have our groceries arriving from Tesco's after ordering online for the first time.... Do we tip the delivery fella?

I think you should invite him in and give a mince pie and a nice cup of coffee :)

Oh, and don't forget his Christmas card :)

As someone who works on the tills at Sainsbury's, I always find it kind of unfair the way waiters and waitresses get tips but we don't, LOL. After all, they are both quite similar kinds of customer service! I suppose it's just tradition in restaurants, and the fact that people are out for a meal and (hopefully) in a good mood. But there's no reason why people in supermarkets shouldn't get tipped too!

Not that I'm biased or 'owt. ;)

We have ours delivered from sainsburys sometimes and I have never tipped the driver....Maybe I should...Now you have me thinking.

Have had shopping delivered before and never tipped them, Never thought about it before but maybe with it being Christmas they get tipped.

Right then, no tip tonight but if all goes well and we do it online again then we will tip for a christmas delivery!

Honestly never thought of tipping in a Supermarket  , especially at Tesco's yesterday where they had 2 till's open out of 40+

I never tip the Sainsbury's delivery man - it never occurred to me. If you take this to its logical conclusion you'd tip everyone who provides a service - best not start down that route!!! That's what employers are for.

In my opinion it is completely unnecessary. Like Diana said, if we tipped grocery delivery drivers then almost all service staff I encounter would expect to be tipped. Furthermore, I expect some grocery deliverers might find it rather condescending.

Still, I wouldn't say no. ;) Sometimes I find it frustrating that I put loads of effort into being really friendly and chatting to the customers, and it is actually really genuine (if I do say so myself ;)), whilst others are really grumpy and don't say a word, but we all get paid the same. :confused3 This is what I really do sometimes envy about waiting jobs!

Of course I would never *really* expect people to tip me, I just like to dream. :)

Interesting question. Never thought to tip the Tesco delivery yet I don't hesitate to say thank you at Christmas to the postie and bucket man :confused3

I only ever tip the paper boy. Last year I gave him £3 and he literally grunted and was shaking his head when he got back on his bike - didn't even say thank you, so I'm thinking twice about giving him anything this year!. Is £3 mean? I thought it was quite reasonable.

There used to be an old saying: "Virtue is its own reward" - doesn't put dosh in your pocket but should give you a nice rosy glow knowing you've been the best Emma you can be!!!

I think £3 is incredibly generous. I wouldn't give him anything this year after that degree of rudeness and ingratitude!!!

Since we don't have a daily paper, I can't say what I would tip him/her. I do tip the Postman and Refuse collectors however. I give the Postman £10 and the Refuse collectors £20 - I mean would you want to do their job? - I wouldn't!

I don't tip the Tesco delivery man/woman - except my Christmas week delivery, when I give £5 as we have loads (30) of heavy bottles delivered.

Wow!!! I think that's incredibly generous!!! I never see our postie or binmen but I'm afraid I wouldn't tip them even if I did. I do believe in acknowledging exceptional service but not for simply doing the job they get paid for. Must be an old scrooge, I suppose!!!

Wow! you're a very generous lady Gill, I personally wouldn't want the dustmans job BUT I wouldn't mind his wage!! they aren't exactly badly paid!
I probably wouldn't even think of tipping the delivery driver (if we had that sort of service around here) 'cos then you'd go down the road of tipping the Argos/Dixons delivery, The catalogue delivery person, everyone! As someone who also does a service job I wouldn't expect a tip although I must save some of my clients ££££ by getting them cheaper train tickets etc than they were quoted by National Rail Services!

I have to admit we 've been getting deilveries from Tesco for a long time and I've never tipped the Driver. I think they would see that as condesending. We do have a chat and you can nominate on the website if you think your driver deserves recognition for his good service and I think they then get some sort of spot award from the company.
