Tipping in the uk?

I don’t have my groceries delivered but I do lots of other online shopping which gets delivered and have to say I’ve honestly never thought of tipping them and it’s not something I intend to start.

As for others, our binmen won’t even take the bags out of the bin we have to do it and leave it by the side of the road otherwise it gets left so I don’t think so! Never see the postie and DH and I were discussing the paper girl yesterday, I said a £10 and he said £5 which I thought was a bit mean, now I’m not so sure.

On the rare occasions we order a take-away we do tip the delivery person.

I probably wouldn't even think of tipping the delivery driver (if we had that sort of service around here) 'cos then you'd go down the road of tipping the Argos/Dixons delivery, The catalogue delivery person, everyone! As someone who also does a service job I wouldn't expect a tip although I must save some of my clients ££££ by getting them cheaper train tickets etc than they were quoted by National Rail Services!
I only tip the Tesco man/woman for my Christmas delivery. I order 30 bottles of 2L soft drinks as well as various other bottles and the rest of the dry goods. That's a lot for them to carry so I feel they should be rewarded.

I suppose tipping is a personal thing, but I've always done it and I have never seen any sign of them thinking I'm being condecending.

I've never ordered groceries online but I always tip the person who delivers the take-away pizza, Indian or Chinese meal.

I always tip the Indian meal/Pizza home delivery guy and at Christmas I always tip the postie and the paper boy. :goodvibes

I tip the pizza man & Indian / Chinese delivery people.

I have never thought to tip the bin men!

I don't tend to tip the postie because it is often my step dad :teeth: But he very much appreciates any tips he gets, and would not see it as condescending in the least.

It is the basis of Boxing Day after all, isn't it?

Speaking as someone who used to have a paper round, I would say about 20% of people tipped. Only 50p or a pound but it was lovely to a 13 year old, I can assure you. This was some time ago but I would say in today's money £3 is a nice tip :goodvibes
