Tipping- How much and to whom

As I always say when this topic comes up, I had never heard of tipping housekeeping in any hotel until I started reading the Dis.

It is noted in travel books, blogs, and etiquette books too. I really don't understand how people can claim ignorance?

Again I am 43 and have been tipping since I was a kid.

I've never heard of tipping in a hotel either, unless it's valet or bellhop service. Yes, I would/have tipped housekeepers that come spend hours in my house cleaning up my inexcusable mess, but not hotel staff. I don't tip busboys at restaurants unless it's a restaurant that splits tips and they get some from my server!

When I was in high school back in the late 1960's I worked every summer as a chambermaid for a large motel. Most rooms left small tips for me, and believe me, I was thrilled to get them. This was in rural up-state NY, which is always a bit behind the times and people are very frugal with their money, so it just goes to show tipping the housekeeper has been an accepted practice for quite awhile!

So (no surprise here!) I leave tips for the housekeepers when we travel, and do it daily so the correct person gets it. I don't try to "overthink" the politics of it or expect anything like a towel animal in return. To me, it's just a nice thing to do. Period!

A few dollars a day is not going to break me, and if it can put a smile on someone's face, it makes my vacation even more enjoyable for me. I have a hard time believing anyone is handing that money back over to Disney.

I never tip housekeeping, anywhere.

I don't read etiquette books, as I don't care what they say.

I tip WDW maids $5 a day as I do any hotel maid. I leave it daily as they may not be my maid every single day due to shift work.

I also tip my servers 20%.

We also tip the driver on the Magical Express bus. If he gets any bags from under the bus, $1 per bag, but if not, I still give a few $$. Especially if they are fun drivers or do something special. Like on one trip, the driver slowed a little so we could get a picture of the Disney archway. (not so much to be a hazard, just slowed a bit...).

We always tip the bus driver too - in fact our last trip to Disney we were the only people on the whole bus to do so which surprised us.

I always tip housekeeping daily, I really don't care if it's not a 'tipped position'. They work extremely hard, and if I can make their day a little more pleasant by leaving a couple of dollars, then it's worth it.

I worked at a hotel for a short period of time. Tips were not counted as part of our salary and no one expected them. However, they were nice to recieve and we got them about 80% of the time. Usually if a guest tipped us we would do something extra special for them. It's nice but it's not like they wont do a good job if you don't.

You're asking a question on a Budget Board about tipping. Of course a bunch of posters will not tip.

I tip well when service warrants it. Housekeeping is not one of those services. :)

Well said. If leaving a few bucks a day for someone who is cleaning up after me and my family and therefore making my vacation more enjoyable is not perceived as a job that warrants a tip, I don't know what is.

I always leave a tip for housekeeping at WDW and any other hotel that I frequent. I learned to do so from my parents.

That's right I don't tip non tipped positions.

I tip well when it is a position that is paid to get tips.

I always ask and no one answers - Do you tip all the ride operators? the people who clean the bathrooms?-that certainly is a hard and non glamorous -, messy job. The parking lot CM's? They are all paid the same or less than the housekeepers. And if you don't how do you decide they aren't worth a tip and housekeeping is?

My sentiments exactly ::yes:::thumbsup2

I worked at an Inn for 2 years right out of college (I was not a housekeeper)and the housekeepers worked hard and were commonly tipped. This is in VT. My mom is a housekeeper at a bed and breakfast and gets tips. I have stayed at resorts where there were housekeeping tip envelopes. I tip when we stay at hotels including WDW and have never had the tip envelope left behind. In my experience housekeepers are a tipped position and have always been. And on cruises your steward is certainly tipped and cruise lines suggest your tip amount. Is there something in writing somewhere where WDW says don't tip the mousekeepers? Seems strange to me that people keep saying it is not a tipped position. Why would it not be if the same position is routinely tipped everywhere else in the country?

When I stayed at AKL in 2002 the guide they gave at check in specifically listed the tiped positions, mousekeeping was not one of them.

No I do not tip ride operators et al. Because theirs is not a tipped position - but housekeeping (except is Disney's eyes) IS!! Read a travel book, an etiquette book, etc.

The only place I have EVER heard of NOT tipping is here!

AND apparently tipping is common - there are posters in this thread who have stated they were tipped as housekeepers.

Perhaps it is regional?

If you do not want to tip fine.

I used to work housekeeping (outside of Disney) and it is not a tipped job. They get paid extra, because it is an undesirable position. If someone decided to leave a tip, which was very rare, we did not have to report that as income, nor did we even have to let our manager know about it. I don't care what a travel book says. It is not a tipped position.
