but just curious about why people get so wound up by these two topics. more than any other?
i think each to thier own it doesnt affect me others seem to think if reflecks on us as a nation.
i change my view on each with the wind

The car hire question is very much an individual thing Some people don't want to drive on their holiday and others thinkthat in the land where the car is King that one is very much needed.

With tipping it is a much wider question. It includes personal budgets, adopting local customs, understanding employment custom and giving an impression of a people which may affect how those that follow are treated.

Tipping does seem to come up quite a bit on forums in general and I for one think we Brits get a really bad press about it - unfairly in my opinion.

I am sat opposite an America right now - Aaron from Houston (he says Hi)

He tells me the standard tipping rule that Americans tend to follow is 15%. What he personally does is to take the tax amount and double it - if the tip hasn't already been added.
I have read on all sorts of forums that we should be tipping 20 - 25% and its because we Brits tend to stick at the 20% we are consdidered bad tippers.
According to Aaron this is definately not true and that 20% is the top end for very good service.

Tip or not to tip to me depends on the service, if its good then yes a tip is left and we tell them how we enjoyed the meal service etc!
car hire really in florida depends on how much freedom you want, what i mean is, obviously you can go further afield and explore other areas of florida, its down to the individual,if your staying on disney property then a car wont be needed-as much- in a villa yes you will need one, although people have got by using taxis.. am i now dribbling on must be the tablets!!!

Interesting topic - we are about to go for the first time and we are on the Disney Dining plan, so being as we will have no bill - how much tip do we leave if we have a good service? I am all for tipping if the service has been good - but I will begrudge leaving a tip for poor service.

Just been following yet another tipping thread elsewhere, yet again closed down. Its a subject you will never get everyone to agree on.
As Kenny as posted an American opinion, my American friends tip similar.
Personally I would not tip for bad service, neither would Americans I know, only happened to us once in over 20 trips but if anyone wants to tip for bad service thats upto them.

As for car we would not enjoy Florida without one, even onsite I would rather use a car than Disney transport. Next person might not want a car and believe its best way to enjoy a trip to Florida.

Both subjects have such a massive range of views so will always create debate and usually end up argumentative as many think their way is the right way and won't accept any other opinion.

This is my tipping theory for WDW:

Meals - 20% give or take depending on service

If someone carries my bag at AKL, $2/bag as we'll only have 2 I'll probably make it $5, but I normally look after my own bags, as it doesn't bother me, and it's nice to have them right away when you get to your room.

The thing I never know about is what if someone gets you a taxi, or a dinner reservation, or what if I ask about changing rooms at AKL and someone does me a favour, then what do I do?!?!

i think tipping should be todo with the standard of service rather than the size of the bill
but people do seem to get hot under the collar over the rights and wrongs of itipping
i wont get on my soap box about cars.
why do some turn what should be a pleasant time planning for ones hols into a nightmare.
and heres another one to ponder why do you have a whip on a coach for the driver but not on a plane for the pilot. although you do sometimes get a cheer that hes remmebered how to fly when you land.

Hi

Tipping is a pet hate of mine, me and the good lady at some point in the holiday have a 'discussion' about it.

I will tip for table service (I dont like to but if that is how they 'do it' here then ok)

By the way, I must direct anyone who has not seen it, to the opening of Reservoir Dogs (beware the language but the topic is funny regarding tipping)

Anyways, what I dont like is the other stuff, for example we checking in at Newark last Thursday to fly down here to Florida and the guy that checked the bags in and weighed them asked for a tip, he said 'I hope my service was good' in other words give me some money. I adopted the buck per bag rule and gave him $6, in honesty, what for I dont know!!!!

Then we got the magical express to POR, the guy got the cases out of the bus, I stood right next to him and had them off him, so basically he leaned in a pulled them out, BUCK per BAG!!!!!!! Come on

But having said all that if you think about it it will make your life a misery, its one of the reasons we go to the self service places. The bar in the POR resort, you cant go to the bar and get a drink, they have to bring it to you, becasue thats how they do it! so you pay for the drinks and for someone to carry them to the table!

See you got me all aggresive now!

The reason why these two subjects (among others) cause heated debate on forums such as these is because everybody has, and is entitled to, their own opinions but some people can't accept or respect that.

Personally, I have done Orlando both with and without a car and, if somebody asks a question, I will give them an honest answer based on my own experiences. But I fully accept that it is only my opinion and, if other people have different opinions, that is fine.

Let's face it, if we were all the same, we would do everything identically and how boring would trip reports be then

I'll start the thread now! Although for some reason I've found that most threads on the Uk and DLRP (which is mainly UKers) boards rarely get as heated as the daily nitpicking that goes on over on the TP board.

I think maybe it's because we're a smaller nation so all a little more similar to one another.
