Tipping Envelope Etiquette

Let's see if I have this right... I will be on a 14 night cruise with four cruisers. This will be around $672 in tips. This will be charged to my on board account. If I want to tip over the amount, I will put that in envelopes. Do I have this right???

Yes, that's Disney's suggested tip amount.

I guess I read the whole thing and misunderstood it. Why would you give an envelope, if you tipped on your account and were not giving anything in cash? Just to hand over an empty envelope? I would have assumed that anyone giving an envelope was giving cash.

The envelope would not be empty...they would have the tip stubs in them. I suppose you could equate it to having direct deposit of your paycheck. The employer still hands over/sends you a stub with the amount of your check that was deposited into your bank account. Same principle applies...the tip stubs/voucher (whatever you want to call it) shows what was deposited into their account.

I would guess CM's get an accounting of their tips weekly or monthly from DCL but maybe they would like to know after each cruise how much they made. I can totally understand that. What if they didn't want to wait for the official accounting from DCL of what tips they made. By getting the vouchers after each cruise they have a good idea of what they made that cruise.

Someone else mentioned their fear that the CM's would open their envelopes in front of them....I have never, ever heard of that happening and I think that would be most unprofessional of them. I am sure they do open them at some point as some people do add cash so it would be silly if they did not open them eventually.

As a former server and bartender, I'm sure they rip them open the moment the guest is out of site just like I would have. Of course people want to know how much they make and of course hope for extra. :goodvibes

You can put the extra in cash in your envelope or you can ask guest services to add the extra to your onboard account. If they did that they'd print new vouchers/tickets and give those to you to hand out.

This is the first time I've seen an explanation that doesn't involve with just doing it in person to show thanks or appreciation. I didn't realize they wouldn't find out how much they got right away. I guess in the back of my mind I assumed that they got a print out like we do with our onboard expenses, or when I check my employers website or bank account online. We don't even get pay stubs anymore. It's all online.

But you give it to them the last night so the next day at breakfast - the last time you see them - they will know.

I've often wondered if the head or lead servers can see what you tipped the others? For example we loved our asst. server and added to his tip at GS to equal the lead server's. We didn't up the lead server's tip. I always kinda wondered if he knew? ;)

We board the Fantasy for our first ever cruise in just 4 more days! Wheee!!!

I didn't read all the pages but have 1 question.

My Mom and I are in the same stateroom. I will have 1 cc attached to my KTTW that will cover costs for my DD and myself. My mom has a different cc attached to her KTTW card.

Will our tips be split also (ie. 2 people charged to my cc and 1 person to hers) or, will all the tips be charged to my cc since I am the primary person on the registration? We're both taking cash to cover most/all of our expenses which we will deposit at Guest Services, so just wondering if we should put her tip money with mine or, if we can direct them to take her portion of the tips from her cash?

I'm guessing regardless of how we split things up for our own ease, we will receive only 1 set of stubs and envelopes?

TIA!

I shared a cabin with a friend and we just made a quick stop at guest services and let them know how we wanted it split. she paid for hers, I paid for mine. we each received our own tip tickets and envelopes.

just let them know.

This brings up a very good point - especially on a longer cruise, go to guest services 2 nights before the end of the cruise or at the very latest, on the last day of the cruise during the day and ask for a printout of your current charges. That's the best to fix any issues - before the last night, and especially before the final morning - when things get really busy.

Funny you mention this. My employer only pays via direct deposit. About ten years ago they stopped sending out the paper stubs to cut waste.

My kids loved giving out the tip envelopes at the end of the last meal.

I wonder if they won't stop the envelopes because of people always adding cash?

The 'excellant' speech. Now THAT is ackward! ;)

Well I guess my employer is as archaic as the tip envelopes then!!!:rotfl2:
