We are down the line with published tipping etiquette. When we use the Bell Staff we tip at the destination of the bags c/w standard etiquette. That is at the room on arrival and car on departure. For Valet, we tip on pickup, again per standards published. Now if someone does something extra and appropriate, we tip extra. That might be rainy conditions, remembering our name, restaurant suggestions that work out well, directions, etc. We do not generally tip housekeeping for doing their job as they are not in a tipped position within Disney, if they do something extra above and beyond, we tip. I do not tip for them to remedy things that should have been correct to start with such as supplying a working coffee pot. It is my opinion that based on the statements on DIS and other sites that some people over tip and more with DVC than with other timeshares or similar situations. While on the surface it's a nice thing but it does have a boomerang effect and will push up costs. Case in point that the standard restaurant tip of 15% has escalated to 18-20% over the years and during that time the employer's pay a lower % of the wage than when tipping standards were lower.

Can some one explain what a tipped or untipped position is?

I always tip mousekeeping.
What is the rational for not tipping them?

If we all tipped mousekeeping upon check out
maybe there would be less gripes about room conditions?

I have always gotten rooms in good condition.I think they do a good job.

Not as much as a normal hotel stay but 5 bucks will not kill anyone.

The rational for not tipping them is they are just doing a job, much like a lifeguard at the pool. You do not tip these people.

Certain positions, such as bellboy or waiter, are paid a lower wage with the assumption that part of compensation will come in the form of tips. These are known as "tipped positions."

I have to ask...there is obviously a clear trend on who tips what, but beyond people not using Valet parking, is there a group that doesn't beleive they should be tipped?

I find it hard to believe that mosekeeping is overpaid.
you should always Tip them .
If you valet park your car you should tip them everytime they get your car or park it for you.

The employer sets whether the position is considered tipped or not. For tipped positions they might make $2.50 or so plus tips. For a non tipped position, they make whatever the going rate if for the company in question and generally commensurate with the position for the region and to a degree, nationally. Proper tipping etiquette is you tip when you pick up the car, not drop off. If you want to go beyond, that is up to you. Same with bell services, at the room on arrival and at the car on departure. EVERY system where multiple people are involved has a way to "share" tips. It might actually be pooling tips or it might be rotating trips. Just look at books and web locations. To say one SHOULD do more than the national standards is over the top.

This isn't necessarily standard. I'm an etiquette freak, and depending on which rule you follow you either tip on return of your vehicle in good condition or both drop off and return. I've never seen a drop-off only etiquette though.

It is not necessarily the only standard, but it is the standard. Just look. You'll find around 9 out of every 10 places states this but you'll occasionally see one the other way.

So what do you think about this. We arrive our DVC resort by car service. We are greeted by bell service when we pull up. My driver and the bell service person get the stuff out. I of course tip my driver. I go inside to get checked in. Do I tip the bell service person that is putting all my stuff on the cart while I check in??? Obviously I am going to tip the bell person that brings my stuff to our villa. NOW because we use the same car service every time....if we stay at SSR or OKW and we arrive late afternoon/early evening he will always wait for me to check in, drive us to the villa and we unload. :goodvibes Love our service. SO that cuts out the bell service guy. Anyway...I tend to tip like this: Tip sky cab at airport, tip driver, tip bell service person that help take out bags and places on cart while I check in, then bell person who brings it. Now if we switch resorts it is even more tipping.

How about this scenario: On check out day you tip bellservices to store your luggage right. SO when your driver arrives later that day and you have bell service bring the stuff out of storage to the car/driver....do you tip again? I do. I feel like I TIP and TIP and TIP. How about when you do airport check in from resort and you are right there at bell service and you have them store your carry on bags. I tip again, then when we pick them up I tip again. :scared1: I would appreciate your take on this. Thanks

I always give the valet parking a tip when dropping off and picking up.
Nothing crazy just a few bucks.

I will retract my statement .
People "should"do what they thing is proper.
Giving a valet two bucks extra is not going to brak my budget.
Concidering how much the mouse costs to begin with. How much for a bottle of water in MK?

My opinion of course, nothing more. Given the published standards, you tip at the room on arrival and car on departure. Of course there are often special circumstances that justify additional tipping but I see no reason you truly need to differ if they have to store. Tipping at the car is still appropriate though a larger tip would be reasonable if service warranted it. And it would be a situation where tipping earlier might be the best thing, just divide up the tip accordingly.
