I am having a whole house of furniture delivered today. Am I supposed to tip the delivery men? I spent almost $20k so it's a lot of furniture but I was just going to give them water. If I should tip them, how much would I give??

I don't know if its the social standard, but I would definitely tip them for carrying THAT much stuff. I would kind of watch them and see how many there are/how much each person carries and base it off that. Maybe a base $ x # of items. I assume they'll be carrying stuff in for a few minutes at least so you could figure out the tip.

That IS a lot of furniture. We are getting a leather sofa delivered this morning and I plan to give the delivery guy $5 for just that one piece.

Usually there are 2 guys in the truck. I would probably give them $20 each if I were getting a whole house full of furniture.

lol yes it is a lot..we had a fire in Nov and so we built a new house. I am beyond excited to get furniture! I guess I will see how many guys there are. Thanks!

I may get flamed, but my question is - did you pay a delivery fee? If not, I think you should tip; but if so, I think you don't need to.

Just because there is a fee, does not mean no tip though...Domino's chages a delivery fee for pizza, but I still tip my driver, as they dont see any off that "fee" money

Well, one of those sites I linked points out - the store, not the delivery persons, benefit from any delivery charge. Delivery people simply earn an hourly wage. Again, I'll stress that same site's suggestion to 'go with your gut', i.e. do whatever YOU want.

I always tip delivery people, probably between $5 - $20 a person, depending upon what they do (drop a couch in my living room, put together beds, install a dryer...).

Why would you tip a delivery guy?
Do you tip the Fed Ex guy? UPS guy?
Does the restaurant tip the guy when he delivers their linens?
Does the bakery tip the guy who delivers the stove?
Does the grocery store tip the guy who delivers
I especially do not understand when you have already paid the fee for delivery? It is not as if these guys are getting paid $3 an hour.
The next thing I am going to hear is you need to tip the janitor at work for changing out your garbage can!

Why would you tip a delivery guy? Because you CHOOSE to, or not to; because they're providing an additional service. You could certainly have picked up the furniture.
Do you tip the Fed Ex guy? UPS guy? Rarely - but I tip the maintenance man employed by my apartment complex who accepts the UPS delivery and places it in my apartment so I don't have to go to UPS and pick it up myself because he's going out of his way for me; by the way, the year I was getting a lot of UPS shipments and at the UPS facility about every other day, I did bring the counter people a food gift to share. That I got to the head of the lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng line was COMPLETE coincidence - I was the only person in that line who'd called ahead of time, so my package was waiting for me :)
Does the restaurant tip the guy when he delivers their linens? Regular weekly delivery? Probably not.
Does the bakery tip the guy who delivers the stove? One time/rare delivery of heavy restaurant equipment that may need to be correctly placed and installed? I wouldn't doubt it.
Does the grocery store tip the guy who delivers What "guy" who delivers what? Merchandise to the store to sell? Not likely - see 'linens', above. Actual grocery delivery, from the store to a customer? Uh, the customer would tip - yes, despite a delivery charge - THAT goes to the store.I especially do not understand when you have already paid the fee for delivery? It is not as if these guys are getting paid $3 an hour.

Go ahead and tip the janitor. You don't want to tip? Great. Keep your wallet closed. Please don't criticize others who ASK about tipping.

no? the driver does get paid. no pizza bought, no "fee" paid for delivery, no wages for your driver id say. of course he sees that "fee" money. myself and many others call that system, wages. wages are great, you get to pay your bills and all kinds of stuff with wages.

Me too! I cannot imagine watching men move an entire house of furniture and not tipping them - that's really hard work. Of course, I usually will also offer them water, soda or iced tea and a plate of cookies.

And, as far as the question of "do you tip the UPS or FedEx guy?" Yes, I do - I give both of them a very generous tip every Christmas along with my mailman, my superintendent, the doormen and porters in my building, etc. I really appreciate good service.

I find that furniture delivery men never stick around long enough after completing delivery to collect a tip!

The minimum I would tip would be enough for the guys to buy their lunch and I would go from there...

I always tip...unless they bang my furniture around or drop it :scared1: with all that furniture it will take them awhile...if their are 2 guys I would tip them at least $15 or $20 each.....more than 2 I would give them $10 each.....also depends on where you got your furniture.....if you got that at like Ethan Allens that would be a lot less furniture due to the price as to getting it at like MORS furniture for less.....

I just went yesterday to Ethan Allens...and got 2 new chairs.....$3,000...so 20K there would take the delivery men not as much time....Also how hot is it...and how many stairs..will they be assembling anything like beds when they get there? How polite were they? All these need to be taken into consideration when deciding how much is enough.....

Enjoy sitting on your new furniture....I can see you big smile now:woohoo:

Do you tip the Fed Ex guy? Yes I doUPS guy? Yep him too
Does the restaurant tip the guy when he delivers their linens? can't speak for them if I owned the restaurant I would
Does the bakery tip the guy who delivers the stove? again don't know but I would
Does the grocery store tip the guy who delivers
I especially do not understand when you have already paid the fee for delivery? It is not as if these guys are getting paid $3 an hour. Not quite but some are by the mile and some just above minimum wage

and yes we take care of the garbage guys around the holidays and the mail lady too!

(Obviously the bolded parts in quoting you are my answers)

Blue collar workers are the back bone of this country and often the lowest paid...I'm not up to debate on that..I AM from blue collar roots and married to a trucker...and FWIW I pay $7.50 for a bale of hay & I'm giving the kid that puts it in the truck a buck
