Tipping...can I just ask

Angie Honey !!!!!!

Long time no speak LOL ;)

okay what I do is 15-20% unless it is exceptional service when we will do 25-30%.

But I do agree with other poster about bad service, or rude/indifferent servers rather than leave nothing (they may think because we are british we just don't "get" the tipping culture) we leave a small tip...then they know we knew to tip but that we are showing our appreciation at being treated poorly.

Uk visitors have made a rod for their own backs as we are notorious for forgetting about tipping or tipping very small amounts, and some, and I do stress some, servers take the attitude of "what's the point in busting a gut for them, it's hardly going to pay me".

I have only once ever tipped something like 5% as the server avoided us when we needed drink refills, threw the plates down at us and generally grunted in our direction...we were clearly an inconvience to this young man ..... no problem,

But this is very rare that there is a lack of service normally we are blown away by the courteous and helpful staff everywhere we go...... so I'd not worry too much, I doubt you'll have to do it

I have never ever ever not left a tip. It is essentially stealing. A waiter has to tip out bartenders and bussers and foodrunners based on the percentage of their sales, also are taxed on sales, and the IRS assumes they make a certain amount based on their sales....SO by not leaving a tip, the server is basically paying for you to go out and eat!
A tip is given for service. The amount of tip one leaves is directly proportional to the quality of service. If you have lousy service (as opposed to lousy food) then you leave a lousy tip. If you have good service, you leave a good tip.

Sometimes service is so bad it does not deserve any tip at all. It's not stealing!

I never have the heart to tip really low. Whenever we get bad or unpleasant service we grumble the whole time under our breaths ("You can forget about that tip Mister") but in the end I'm never too harsh. I've worked in customer service before and we all have bad days. I'm not saying anyone else should follow my lead... people have every right to undertip if service is bad. I just can't usually bring myself to do it. But then I've never had a truly rude server. I have had a lot of, er, brusque servers in my life, but hey, I'm used to it, I live in Brooklyn.

People always say you don't have to tip on the tax, but I think I usually do anyway.

Pooh & Piglet...I totally agree!!!

I don't tip 30% unless the server has us in stiches and waits on us hand and foot.

I tip 15 to 20% (sometimes even 25%) for good service and I and concious of how many times my water glass gets filled. If the waits are not long, I tip 20% but if I go half the meal being thirsty, I tip 15%.

Now for lackluster service, I tip 10% and I tip 0% and tell a manager if I received poor service. I can't beleive how many people tip 15% for POOR SERVICE...It boggles my mind.

A tip is left for services rendered...If the service was poor...Then I tink this is why the server should go home poor...

I call the manager over to report BAD service and I also report GREAT service.

We have a 36 room motel and 16 -2 bedroom chalets. My cleaning ladies have only gotten $300 in tips all summer because the people in motels around here don't tip good...Not anyones fault but that is life.

I have friends who are servers who tell me that, yes, sometimes people tip bad or not at all...But good servers can make a good living. They say that the ones who complain that they get stiffed the most are the worst servers in most cases...
