Has anyone noticed tip jars at fast food drive true windows? Are we supposed to be tipping for ordering food now? I saw one jar that was labeled "help us pay for our gas". :confused3 :confused3 Has tipping gotten out of hand? Should we be tipping for all types of services now?

Yep, I see tip jars at drive thru, and counter at fast food joints. I think tipping is getting a little out of hand. It' s like you have to tip for everything now

I just ignore it. They can ask and there's no law saying we have to pay it though.

I tip who I want to tip.

I swear there is no place that I have NOT seen tip jars.

Ignore them. You don't "have to" tip for anyone who isn't in a tipped position: restaurant servers, delivery people, taxi/limo drivers, bell staff, valets, skycaps, tour guides, masseuse, hairstylists, manicurists, shoe shiners, casino dealers, some performers, and in some cases, housekeepers. If in doubt, ask management (specifically), "Is the XXXXX's wages based on an expectation that patrons will tip?" If the answer is yes, then ask what the expected tip rate is, if you're not sure. If you get a cagey answer to either question, then don't worry about tipping.

I loathe this kind of crap. I have stopped patronizing stores which have tip jars on the counter and I have told the managers why I won't be coming in any more.

Starbucks has had tip jars at the drive thru window for a long time. A LOT of the places in the food court at the mall have tip jars, which I find offensive. Unless someone is being paid "tip wage" (about half of minimum wage) I am not going to tip! I don't tip for fast food, I don't tip to have my groceries taken to the car, and I am sure there are other places with tip jars where I don't tip.

Absolutely not! This is insane!! Sometimes I think that the tipping situation is out of control. I hate the fact that servers in restaurants expect tips and don't provide the service to earn it. It's rare that I leave a restaurant and not leave a tip, although I have. I never leave a standard %. If I get exceptional service they get a nice tip. If I get average service (not filling beverages, not checking in) they get an average tip. I know that servers depend on their tips but I also feel that they should do something to earn it. Handing me a bag out of a window does not warrent a tip!

No I haven't noticed it but even if I did there is no way I would tip them.

I've had people at Sonic (the ones who take food out to you) ask if I needed change back. :confused3 I never know if I'm supposed to tip there or not, so I avoid going to Sonic altogether. If I do go, I use their drive-thru because I don't feel obligated to tip in that scenario.

Oh Hell No...I am not tipping at drive thru windows:rolleyes:

Tip for THEIR gas? Who is the one sitting in their car wasting gas while they take 10 minutes to cook a hamburger hold the onions?

If I have lose change giving back. Then I will leave that. I also tip at Sonic they bring the food at to me in so I don't have to get out in the rain, cold. hot snow.

While I don't think I have ever left a sit down restaurant without leaving a tip, you don't "have to" tip anyone. And I certainly wouldn't tip at a drive through window.

I would tip at Sonic, just a small amount. I have not seen tip jars at any of the fast food places around here, except for Subway (if that counts). I would not tip at Subway or any other fast-food place.

I would never tip at Sonic as I have never enjoyed a meal there anyway! :headache:

I've never seen a fast food tip jar here (of course, the only time we do fast food is McDonald's once in a great while for my girls) but if a McDonald's employee asked me for a tip, I'm pretty sure I would laugh. And then I would ask them if they really thought the 20 cents from me buying my double cheese burger would help pay for any amount of gas...

I've tipped my change at Starbucks and if Chipotle makes my burrito extra large, I'll tip a little. I'm shocked at fast food places having a tip jar. A lot of companies forbid it.
