If you request a wheelchair at the airport and the person wheels you to your gate, what do you tip if anything?

Thanks,

Dawn

A couple of bucks (each time) should be fine, a bit more if they go above and beyond.

Thank you.

My parents are actually flying as I type, but Dad called me last night to ask and I had no idea. I told him around $5 and it won't hurt to tip a few $$ extra, but for future use I just wanted an idea.

They probably won't fly too much anymore. My mom's health is not good enough to keep traveling.

One airline I used, I can't remember which. the people were not allowed to accept tips. I would say that the tip amount would depend upon how long the person stayed with you. Some stay, if needed, until you board.

If they just park her at the gate, DM gives them $2.

If they stay until she boards or leaves and come back and check on her, wheel her to the restroom, to the snack bar, she gives them $5.

At least $5 but as much as $10 for superior service.

My Dad flies all the time and likes to hand out the dollar coins so they remember him, he always gets excellent service at his home airport.

This is my range, too. A lot depends on the size of the airport, the time of day, how long it took for someone to show up, how long I had to wait between then and when we finally got started (last trip, despite assuring the passenger assistance person that there was nobody left on the plane - because I had been forgotten after somebody 'usurped' the wheelchair I reserved weeks earlier - I had to wait while he checked for himself); how far I've gotten wheeling myself...

When I am using a chair, especially if I have a connection, it will always be between $5 and $10.

I tipped $5 for the guy who helped me 1 way with my mom from the gate to luggage...where my DH met us and we no longer needed assistance from the airline.

I had a client several years ago who handed each attendant helping her a $50. She got kid glove service wherever she went, obviously. At that time, I told her $5 was fine. She had such a great reputation, skycaps watched for her name to come up. She was also friendly, appreciative and gracious.

Sounds great for those who can comfortably afford to tip at that level.

We use $5 as a baseline, but will sometimes tip more or less than that depending on the level of service DD receives.

$2.00 is far too little! For transportation just to a gate, I would tip at least $5.00. When my husband had a major leg injury while we were on vacation, we had a wheelchair attendant meet us at our gate (IAD) when we got home. She wheeled him from the gate to baggage claim to our car. Quite a trek. I gave her $20.00 and it was well earned.

Ok, I think my dad tipped a bit over $5. I haven't asked him.

However, my mom didn't need a lot of help. She just couldn't walk the entire way and probably could have used those carts if they had them.....I forgot to mention that to them.

Do you tip the cart drivers?

Dawn

Any time I've used a cart (such as in Atlanta when not in a hurry) I have never tipped a cart driver and have never seen any other passengers tip them either.

My parents both require wheelchair assistance to/from the gate for their snowbird trips to Orlando :) . They usually tip $5 for each of them each time. They insist on ONLY flying SWA due to their outstanding porters (I think that's what they are called :confused3).

This. When I was driving para-transit, we would often do airport escorts and were not allowed to accept tips. HOWEVER, I think a tip would be nice, especially if the person was very helpful.

ETA-oh yeah, probably $3-5.

My step dad does as this is a extra service. If we do the pushing then we do not tip the guy who just gives us the chair.

I fly to/from MCO to IAD about every 6-8 weeks. I have a neurological disease and can't walk any appreciable distance (I tried walking to my JetBlue gate at MCO a week ago and swore never again!) The distance from the JetBlue gates to baggage claim at IAD is slightly more than 1/2 mile, so that's a no-go for me as well.

I've always had superior service from JetBlue attendants and usually tip $5 each way; if they wheel me to the car (H/C parking at each airport, not too far from the terminals) and/or the weather is bad, I tip more. I just factor the cost of the tip into the cost of traveling.
