Tipping at Buffets?

I"m not starting a fight but I am curious about this.

You say that you won't tip 10% because some etiquette book said so? Why do you tip 20%. Where did you get that number from? I believe that 20% is the norm and etiquette says that's what we should tip.

I tip 15% at buffets and 20% at TS meals everywhere.

I just use the same standard I do at TS restaurants and with that I'd never have 10% as my standard.

Because I am a server in a high end restaurant and I know what it is like to tip out 3% of my sales to my server assistant (busser), 1% to my bartender, 1% to my sommelier (wine salesman) and 2% to my food runner.

Let's say that I had $2000 in sales in a night. If I receive 20% tips (which I usually do) then you can assume I made $400 in tips. Here is the breakdown for tipping out my support staff:

$60 to my server assistant
$20 to my bartender
$20 to my sommelier
$40 to my food runner

That equals $140 that I have to tip out. That leaves me with $260 of my original $400.

Now lets say that I had that same $2000 in sales but I was only left 15% tips all night. That would only give me $300 in tips. How much do I have to tip out to my support staff? That exact same $140. Then I get only $160 out of my $300. Does that make sense?

So that is my point. 20% is the standard going rate for tips in Chicago, even at buffets. Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the US so I doubt that 6 million people in the Chicago area are over tipping even at buffets.

I will NEVER tip less than 20% for good service.

Personally I dont know why people keep starting tipping threads. So what the search function isnt working? Would it kill someone to just look for tipping threads? Theres plenty of them on here already. I just wish the MODs would just make a sticky and do 1 tipping thread. Where in the 1st post, include what the standard tipping rate is and say adjust accordingly. This way theres no more tipping threads getting started & no body fights casuing the mods more work for having to say something and making sure the thread doesnt go haywire and have to end up closing the thread. There hasnt been 1 tipping thread yet that I know of where it stayed sane and remained open.

With that said, everyone tips differently. Theres gonna be people who tip less, who tip more and who tip the same as you. Theres gonna be people who dont tip at all. Why judge them? They arent judging you! Like a previous poster said, people tip differently because of how they were raised, where they live, etc. Just stop with any arguments that are rising, and will rise later on, and just accept the fact that there are millions of people in this world and not everyone is gonna tip the same and not everyone is gonna agree with you.

For me it´s a "when in Rome, do as the Romans" thing. Where I come from you don´t tip, ever. It´s just not customary.

Does that mean I don´t tip when I visit the US? Of course not. I do my research before I go, find out what is the "norm, etiquette" or whatever you want to call it, and take it from there.

I would never tip less than 15% at a buffet unless I recieved horrendous service. I usually tip 20% and buffets and TS places and more if I recieve excellent service, which I often do in your country.

However, when I visit Germany for example I usually only leave a few Euros behind if I´m happy with the service. Tipping is not exactly customary but very well appreciated if the customer feels like doing so.

Same thing goes for Denmark. Usually people don´t tip, but if service is superior to what you´ve experienced before, many people find it nice to be able to show some appreciation by adding a tip to the bill.
