Tipflation

Americans tipping 20% is actually an issue. The waitstaff are thrilled, but the locals get very annoyed. You are driving up the expected tips. And they now because its all done verbally with tap and pay.
I've seen a lot of chatter on travel subreddits about this. Americans need to not bring the tipping expectation to other countries lol

It's like when I see people asking how much to tip cab drivers and wait staff in Japan.......uh, please don't?

I remember recently we went out, and it was a group of like 8 (which I am assuming automatically builds in a tip). The receipt showed that there was a 20% tip imposed into the bill already.... THEN at the bottom it had "tip suggestions" like 18%, 20% etc...on top of the price that included a tip.
I think that tip section automatically goes on the bottom of the bill. All the more reason for the waitstaff to point out when a gratuity has been already added to a bill. I understand the reasoning, however feel they need to point it out in case people don’t understand the polic.

I’m working on stopping the tipping guilt and tipping embarrassment, instead tipping on my rules. I used to get embarrassed if I didn’t tip at a coffee shop or ice cream shop whenever they flipped that big screen around and people were in line and could see it- but I put a hard stop to it by telling myself it’s my dang business and I don’t tip for those things. And you know what? Nobody gave a darn. The world keeps turning just fine.

I also implemented table service tipping rules for myself instead of guilty doing 20-25% all the time. I’m incapable of not tipping so 10% for bad, 15% for normal, 20-30% for good-exemplary. And you know what? Again the world has kept spinning. My tip, my business.

DH and me were talking about tipping thread. I had realized that there’s been an automated gratuity for the snack area. Plus now DH just told me there’s also a tip jar. So now we’re supposed to double tip. How many people don’t realize bothered a tip already on the bill and throw money in the jar
Isn’t tipping suppose to be the customer decision places are taking that away from customers
This just doesn’t seem right
I wrote a long note to the casino well see what they have to say
I just wonder if there’s a way to have that automatic tip taken off.

:thumbsup2 This is what I often think too. Especially at places like WDW, where there is no slow time. From open to close, those restaurants are packed. No disrespect to servers. It does annoy me that I am expected to tip a server essentially the same amount I made in an hour as a 44 yr veteran RN, just for bringing us 2 cokes, salads & entrees, because we ordered expensive steaks. Especially when I can estimate that all their other tables will be giving them that much too. I keep telling my husband this is crazy & we should cut back the percentage. We’re so conditioned tho, so we’re still tipping 20%. One of these days we’re really going to do it. Oh, and I have no problem clicking No Tip on all those counter service pick up screens.
Have you ever been a server? It’s really hard work, definitely more challenging than a minimum wage cashier job. I haven’t done it in over 30 years and still have some of the nightmares.

Letters of complaint need to be short and sweet, just the facts, no emotion

I'm curious- you said that your employees are tipped for doing custom auto stereos, window tint, etc. Are they paid less than minimum wage?
One guy runs the front, greets customers, answers the phone and makes appointments. He's paid $16 pr hour. My other 2 guys are paid a $50 a day base pay which comes out to be $12.50 pr hour Plus labor. One gets 25% and the other 30% (due to length of employment). They make $60K and $70K + a year before any "tips".

Yes. Have you ever been an RN????? That’s really hard work too. I think it’s worth more than being a server. My opinion.
I’m not saying it’s not, but a server does more that just bring out your food, certainly worth more than minimum wage. Like garbage collectors, it’s a sucky job where you can make decent money.

EDIT: BTW - These bartenders are making crazy money - even at $1 a drink in some cases. I've seen them tip out the runner $150 on a busy night. (The runner is more of a bar back in this case, but still - that's a nice bit of money)
I worked with a woman who was a waitress in a sports bar Friday and Saturday nights. She made no secret that she made more in those 10 working hours a week than in her real 40 hour a week job. She bought two rental houses with her tip money over the 15 years I worked with her. It didn't hurt that she was an attractive, 30ish redhead with an outgoing personality. She also was a master marketer. Every time a new server got hired, they would turn my friend in for "comping out" hot wings. The manager would just laugh, pull up the stats on alcohol sales and point out my friend sold more second and third rounds than any other server. Hmmm, $2 of wings for free, $70 in additional booze sales.

I have not seen this in Fl yet but in CA we frequently saw a new fee tacked on before the tip which was another 5% to cover kitchen and back of house staff. I feel like employers need to pay staff a fair wage and not expect customers to tip higher to cover it. It’s getting out of control. We typically do 20-25% for lunch or dinner and probably more at breakfast because a lot of time breakfast tip would be under $5 so I would round up. Some of the rules around tipping make no sense. Like basing it on what you order. Is it more work to carry a plate with a steak than a burger?
Yes, where I live we have started seeing a back of house fee plus a fee to use a credit card. This on top of the server tip. I always tip servers well and understand this is how they earn most of their pay, but the cc fee and back of house are too much. They should increase the food slightly so I don't know lol!

Well my mom was an RN, and she made a living, but nothing like what RNs make now. The nurses at the hospital my mom worked at for 40 years went on strike, and the union said entry level for an RN under their contract was $130,000 a year! My mom retired in 1985 and never made more than $30,000 as an OR RN.

maybe it was a sucky job back in the day when cans were physically picked up and dumped by the collectors but where we live they are prohibited from touching the recepticals or it's contents. they drive in very nice ergonomically designed a/c and heated trucks that are automated to pick up the cans/dumpsters, if anything falls out it's on the homeowner to pick it up after the fact. when they finish their route (and it's their call to not do a pickup if the can is off kilter or not in the correctly designated area/they deem a driveway or roadway difficult for that day's driving) they go to the extreemly nice indoor air conditioned and heated solid waste managment facility where the trucks auto unload and are deposited for maintainance to do the cleaning.

not a job i would relish but at at starting wage of just shy of $24 per hour with full benefits and matching 401k they are not hurting for applicants.

still FAR LESS than the average server makes around here with tips, even split, figured in.

Our cans still get lifted the old fashioned way.

At the restaurant I mentioned where the suggested tip percentages have increased.

Let’s say your bill was $100. The highest suggested used to be 28%, so a $28 tip.

Now the suggestion is 30% so a $30 tip.

However, I’m sure menu prices have increased in the two years since I last visited. Let’s say the same food now costs $110. The old high tip suggestion would be $30.80. The new suggestion is $33.

A $5 higher tip for the same food.

It might be a trivial increase for some, but not for others.

Then there are the places that we started tipping during the pandemic to help them out, but now they still expect a tip...and they want more. Oh and if you don't tip they have an attitude...so I just don't go back.
I couldn't agree more. And the attitude >:(

I have never gotten nor given an attitude for not tipping. The only attitudes that i have seen are from the people that don’t believe in tipping.

I think they should be required to point out that a gratuity was already added for a large party when they bring you the bill. I know it already says it in small print on the menu but by the time the meal is over that's not on my mind. So many times I have double tipped and only realized it after the fact. It makes me mad. Yes, I know I should carefully read the bill but when we're out to dinner with all of our kids and grandkids, having a fun time, I just don't tear myself away from the conversation to review the bill. Again, I know it's my own fault but I think it's shady when the server doesn't mention it or circle it on the bill so that it stands out.
