Tip Jar at Subway?

We are on vacation in Az and went to have ice cream yesterday in Sedona. They had a tip jar and I put in $1. Usually I just ignore the tip jar but I was on vacation, in a good mood and just wanted to be nice. But I do not think they should be allowed.

I work in an insurance agency and I think I am going to put a tip jar on my desk for all the good service I do my clients. LOL

I went through the drive thru at my local Dunk's and after I paid there was .82 left. The girl did not hand it to me, she put it in the tip jar . I asked her where is my change. She looked at me with a blank expression. It was all change so I put it in the cup. You charge me extra for a styrafoam cup, or I have to buy an insulated cover, and you steal my change. Too much! I politely said, I want my change now. How will I get it???? says she. Put your hand in the cup and give it back to me. Huff, Huff, stomp, stomp, here you go, Have a GREAT day.

Just what I wanted to deal with at 6am on my way to work

I have NEVER in my life heard anything so impudent. The jars are bad enough, but to steal the change? I hope you let the manager know. I can't believe some of the stories here. What on earth are these people thinking?

Well, in defense of the tipping cups...my DS, 18 works at an icecream shop. He lives in an apartment and makes minimum wage working there. People in the small college town he works in leave tips and they all split them at the end of the day. This may amount to an extra $5 for each of them. Considering how little these kids are paid, tips help supplement their income. Obviously tips aren't mandatory, but there are those who appreciate the hard work these kids do. I went out to visit him one day and there was a street fair. We got slices of pizza at one of the booths. My son, who doesn't have 2 nickels to rub together, tipped the guy $1. He did this because he can appreciate the fact that they work hard and are underpaid. Maybe you all don't agree, but I wouldn't belittle them...tips are optional, not required.

I so agree on tip jars. I worked my way through college on min wage, and I got job experience but no tips.

If this had happened to me, I'd be ornery enough to stay at the window, hand the coffee back to the girl and demand my money back. She can give me the bills back and balance her money drawer however she wants to. (I'll bet she'd be dipping into the tip jar for THAT)

It's outrageous that she took your change like that.

I refuse tips all the time. Now it's because I own the company, before it was because I was just doing my job. If I do my job well, well that's great. If I do my job super-well, fantastic - tell my boss and maybe I'll get a raise.

Part of what I do is tour escorting. The escorts for all the other companies accept (and encourage, I'm told) tips. I never have. I've been doing this for almost 20 years now. I'm sorry, I just don't believe that the customer should be paying me to do my job well. The better I do my job, the better it reflects on the company, and the more people will choose us over someone else thereby ensuring that I still HAVE a job. I'll take that over a tip any day.

Alright, that's the absolute limit. That's definitely crossed the line, and IMHO merits asking for the manager.

What bugs me (not with fast food places) is when the server says "Do you need change from this?". To me that's the same as asking "Can I keep the rest?". If the bill is $35 and I give him $40, then I'm probably just going to leave the $5. If he says "I'll be right back with your change" then I say no, it's okay. If he says "Do you need change" I say "I do now".

Automatically keeping the change. The nerve.

I can tell you one thing.. from what I know as a retail manager in a large chain company - any employee that put out a tip jar or accepted a tip, or solicited a tip from a customer in any of our stores would be fired.

It is not an acceptable practice with non full service food establishments and I'm sure there are some Loss Prevention Auditors that would fire them in a heartbeat.

We can't even keep left over gift wrap if a customer gives it to us after we wrap a present for them.

Not to mention, I'm sure the tips aren't being reported to the IRS like the waiters/waitresses have to do.

These people are changing the entire meaning of the term "Customer Service"

I've seen them more and more too, I just ignore them.

I couldn't believe a few years ago we had breakfast at the buffet at the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas. The made-to-order omlette station had a tip jar!

I go to Subway 4-5 times a week for lunch and they do have a tip jar out....I stick a buck in there once or twice a week but to be honest I would certainly prefer if it wasn't there!! Since I go there al lthe time I feel a bit pressured to put some money in...if it was just a place I stopped by once in a while I wouldn't put anything in there! I was at Cold Stone Creamery on day and I put a tip in and once guy yelled out "we got a tip and then all the rest sang! I could have crawled in a hole at that point! Then as we sat there and ate our ice cream and they had to do that every time they got a tip I really felt sorry for them having to sing everytime someone put money in the jar...its sort of degrading!!

Alot of the counter service places around here have tip jars, but I don't use them.

I don't usually go to Subway. I don't think they should. I also don't think Dunkin' Donuts should! If DD can get away with it, why not Subway. I'd rather tip someone making my sandwich than someone pouring coffee.

I think it all depends.......
Like many other things...you have to look at the situation.

IF I was at a Subway...noticing a very busy lunchtime and watching the employees working extra hard....I would tip. I also think that the tip jar in these places gets split between everyone working the shift...not just the person taking your money...

If I didn't think a tip was deserved, however, I would not leave one just because there was a jar there.

I went to a local bakery the other day and noticed tip jars on the counter. Now, seriously, how hard are these people working putting rolls and such into bags?

I never put money in tip jars. I think it is very tacky also and I'm surprised that the businesses (sp) allow it.

I work at Cold Stone, and that's definitely one of the policies. Customer service is a major issue there; it's basically as important as actually making the ice cream. If an employee is doing their job correctly, they should be giving each customer individual service and making it a fun experience, which I think is more than most counter service restaurants offer. And that includes the singing...when someone places a tip in the jar, the cashier yells, "Hey guys, we just got a tip!" and we all sing one of our songs...most people are amused by it, and a lot of regular customers will put money in just to hear us sing. If you ever want to tip and not be recognized, feel free to tell the cashier that you don't want singing.

I only get paid $5.25 an hour, most employees don't get paid much more than that, so we do rely on tips a little bit. We split the tips in the jar at the end of each shift. I think it would be ridiculous to expect anyone to tip us, and unbelievably rude to just put someone's change in the tip jar. But, I don't think it's unreasonable to have the tip jar there, especially when we have to make each customer's ice cream individually.
