We made it back home! Married, tanned and still recovering :goodvibes

1 - If you aren't used to the heat, you probably won't need the dining plan. We're from northern Ontario and went in August - and wasted at least half of our food. We're planning a trip next year - possibly QS dining if anything, because all the kids wanted were ice cream, drinks and ice cream.

2 - OMG stay preferred if you are going to the All Star. We stayed not preferred at All Star Music and in the August heat the last thing you want is a 10 minute walk to the drink station!

3 - Our favorite Disney time was extended hours until 3am at Magic Kingdom. Awesome, not as hot, and D-E-A-D - we rode the Tea Cups 7 times in a row. Not sure WHY we did... but we did :P

4 - Buy a Disney mister when you get there. Best buy of the trip. The hole in them is big enough to put ice in and every drink place will give you a cup of ice!

5 - Go to parks on non magic hour days. Epcot everything had a 10 minute wait. Except Soarin. Of course.

6 - You can not imagine the heat. It took us 2 days to just find it bearable. The humidity is mad. It makes people grumpy. My 10 year old fell asleep on main street at the MK at Disney. My 12 year old developed an attitude where she tried to convince us to let her stay in the hotel room instead of going to Hollywood Studios. We sweated when we got off the plane and didn't stop. It hit us like a brick wall. Bring good sunglasses and prepare to sweat. Everyone is sweaty. I think the crowds enjoyed my vanilla scented deodorant.

7 - Online grocery delivery is cool but was unnecessary. When it is this hot, drinks don't stay cold and who wants to carry a bag of heavy water bottles around with you? Not us. We wasted 2 cases of water. But we did use some of the snacks for breakfasts while getting ready in the morning. And the case of beer we ordered was much enjoyed at the end of the day :P

8 - We never made a rope drop. Let your plans change. As soon as we realized what the heat did to our daughters we ended up at Typhoon Lagoon 3 times instead of once :P And we slept in a lot and took advantage of the late night hours instead.

9 - Adult drinks are expensive. Very expensive. But very welcome when you're dealing with hot cranky kids who want piggy backs!

10 - If your kids haven't travelled a lot, maybe prepare them in advance for the amount of people who dress "European" at the water parks. My 12 year old spent at least half a day giggling at the men in Speedos. She hasn't seen that before - or the thong like non existent swimwear some of the women wear. We saw ****ies. And more. It was something I never thought of :lmao: Avert your eyes at the Summit Plummit.

11 - BEST TIP - I made a mini first aid kit for our bag. It had Wet Wipes, and a pill container including Robax, Tylenol, Advil, Immodium, Tums and allergy pills. It was the only thing we used every day. It also had 4 bandaids in it

12 - Call me crazy but we found the food costs CRAZY ... and some of the food just plain sucked. Our favorite meal was the Tusker House breakfast which was one of the only ones that fit what the bill should have been if we weren't on the dining plan.

13 - Don't fight. And if you do, let it go. My new husband is a "loser" - park pass, cell charger, his clip on sunglasses, my sunglasses, fastpasses... and at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter.

14 - Disneyquest is weird. Some neat things in there, but I felt it was a waste to visit.

15 - Don't build things up so much that you will be disappointed in anything. It is a different universe there. But there is a lot that isn't perfect - do not expect perfection, just some magic

Thanks so much for the August tips! We are considering going in August 2011 but, I'm a little nervous about it. We have been to Disney in the summer twice before. The first time was when we were dating in 1990 (last week of July and first week of August) and it was a freakin nightmare but, not necessarily because of the heat, actually it was because of my father-in-law (he was not my in law at the time). Father-in-law was a PITA and acted like a child everytime he didn't get his way (long story). The only other time was when DD was almost 2 years old, so 11 years ago. I remember it was hotter than h*ll but, I think my brain blocked out some of the misery.

I'm not really a summer kind of girl which is why I am worried about disney in August. Normally, we go in the winter months or early spring but, DD is starting high school in September and doesn't want to be pulled out of school. Vacations during the school year don't match up for the kids (2 different schools) and DH wants to take 2 weeks so we can also visit family in florida. So, it looks like summer may be our only option.
How were the "tour groups" when you were there?

I agree about the Online grocery delivery....we gave away a half case of water. I gave away much of the stuff that we didn't use because we were not in the room that much in the daytime. So yeah depending on your plans for the day it can be a total waste.

How were the "tour groups" when you were there?

I saw one group of girls (8-10) with matching shirts who were about 16-17 from Brazil who were really sweet. And nothing else. We hit different parks at different times of the day. EMH/non EMH parks... no problems at all!

It is livable in the summer if you are totally prepared for it.Double up on the ice cream money, and buy scented deoderant and you're good to go :thumbsup2 Totally hit the EMH nights at MK too they were AWESOME!! We are thinking next August with my daughters again too now that we know what to expect.

This is really helpful! Late August will be the only time I can go and this has made me feel so much better about going (re crowds etc!).

Free dining made the crowds, no tour groups or anything. All restaurants were super busy, so if you're doing any table service book them way early. I saw people turned away at a LOT of restaurants.

Our two best days were going to Epcot on a NON EMH day when Fantasmic was on at Hollywood Studios (it was DEAD!) and EMH till 3am at MK since it wasn't hot or too busy. My 10 year old got to stay on Test Track for an hour straight and it was so nice hot to have the heat. And Typhoon Lagoon was our favorite of all things Disney :thumbsup2

We stayed offsite in early 8/10. I bought a pack of about 15 white washcloths ($4) before we left. I wet one for each of us, folded them & put them in ziplock bags in the frig over night! Then brought them into the parks in our collapsible cooler. They were a welcome treat in the heat of the day! One day I froze them overnight, however they weren't too easy to unfold when still frozen! Easy & cheap "stay cool" treat!
