so we drive straight through from st louis. We leave at 5:00pm central time and drive 17 hours straight through.

The moment I get in the car to leave, I change the time on the car clock we all have to stare at for 17 hours. This goes a long way to helping our bodies get used to the 1 hour time change. Nothing major, but it helps get you on vacation time. We do the same thing when going home.

I've always done this when I change time zones when flying. It seems to make it easier to adjust.

When flying I change my watch to the new time as soon as the plane takes off. The time on the ground below me does not matter because I'm not on the ground.

But driving, I don't change my watch or the car's clock until the actual time zone line is crossed. I want to be operating on actual time in the area I'm driving in as it can help matching services needed along the way. If I plan to make a quick stop for lunch at McDonald's for instance and they start lunch service at 11am, I need to know when it's 11am where I am, not 11am at my destination.

That's a good point. When I am connecting on a trip and the connecting airport time is different than my destination, I first change my watch to the connecting airport time.

That's what I was wondering about. I think the idea is good but I would just be afraid I would be confused most of the time for services.

It won't work for this trip anyway because where we are stopping over is still at our time zone and we are doing a college visit...they specifcally told you time zone so that was nice. I might try it on the morning we leave from there though as I don't think we will be driving too long before it changes anyway (that's the nice thing about cell phones and their automatic changing! It's the only way I know when we changed.) That would make it easier to calculate our arrival time.

My clock changes automatically when cross a time zone so we can't change it before we leave.......

One hour isn;t much of a shock to the body, for me to even adjust my watch it has to be at least 3 hours difference; my cell will auto adjust to network.

I guess for one day it isn't but I do remember last time my kids were so out of it by the middle of the week due to "losing" an hour.

They are older now so it may not be that big of a deal but I know even when we change the clocks for daylight savings time it seems to take them quite a bit of time before they adjust.

Myself, not so much.
