Received this from a DDE email. Interesting. Is this for when you use the DDE or is it on ALL meal using cash/charge or DDP.

We would also like to inform you that the Walt Disney World® Resort will be implementing an across property policy change regarding gratuity at all food and beverage locations. Effective January 1, 2008, 18% gratuity will be added to all transactions, regardless of party size. Thank you for your continued support.

This new policy  STINKS!!! No one should tell anyone how much to tip....your tipping based on the SERVICE that you receive! I tend to tip in the 20% - 25% range so good servers will lose out and the "BAD" servers will make out! I'll just eat in my room...........

OK calm down.

If you think your service was bad ask for a manager and have it reduced. I am sure Disney will be able to do this.

However, IMHO this is being caused by the "tip on discount" I see a LOT on the DIS. In other words I got a 20% discount so I only tipped on the 80% cost. Or what's going to be even BETTER the "my meal plan cost $38, Dinner was probably $20 so I will tip $4 for a sit down meal where the wait staff brought me 10 soft drinks" (Don't believe me spend some time on the Resturant board here!) Or the "if I add in the tip I can't afford to eat here" group or one of my personal favorites overheard at the Rose and Crown. "We don't have to tip, you don't tip at resturants in England" :scared1: (While technically that MAY be true as the service charge is often in included in Europe at last check the Rose and Crown was in the USA!!!)

So don't blame Disney, the blame lays with your fellow guest "stiffing" the staff so they can buy an extra t-shirt.

They are doing this to protect the servers and they should. They work hard for the money and its so they dont get jipped. My opinion is that with the changes to the dining plan the servers are going to be affectewd the most and this is a way to insure people are being fair. Dont tell me none of you think some people wont be red assed at the changes and stiff the servers.

So...I should pay for the "GREEDINESS" of others???!!! WRONG!!! You know what I am good person, who tends to over tip but I am really getting tired for "picking up the slack" of "others".

A tip is for SERVICE, you pay that tip based on the SERVICE that you received. Why don't they call it what it is? A SERVICE CHARGE!

Just as an FYI...........

tip
Definition 1

Optional payment given in addition to a required payment, usually to express appreciation for excellent service; here also called gratuity.

I am one who tries to tip the 20% (for good service and 20% is so much easier to figure than 18%) on the before discount price so this will save me a little and I will not have to do any math.

I know this tipping question can get pretty heated ---- but I was just wondering if this applied to all or just the DDE.

While I agree with other posters about this now being a service charge and not a gratuity, I'm not that uncomfortable with the policy. You'd be surprised how many people refuse to tip. There are people I work with, whom I refuse to go to a restaurant with, because they refuse to tip (the same people often forget there is tax on food, go figure!). As servers are people who are paid a lower hourly wage because of the ability to earn tips, I think Disney is doing it to protect the wait staff.

At any rate now I don't have to break out the calculator to figure out if I am tipping enough.:headache:

I'm a DDE member and also someone who tips at least 20%. I do agree this change will protect the waiters but now I'm confused as to how this will affect the Disney Dining plan next year. Will you automatically be given a bill for 18% of what the total will have been? Or is this just for people not on the plan? We are using the plan for the first time next spring. :confused3
I also make sure to tip on the "before discount" amount when we use DDE but I can see a lot of people not doing that.

Posting on disney restaurant board two people called Disney and got 2 different anwers. Not a surprise - one said ALL table service will have 18% added no matter how you pay or what plan you are on. The other said the DDP will only have it add if there are over 6 in the party.

I'm more inclined to believe the first response based on their email. I guess it's their way of making sure people on the plan pay their tip, even if they are ticked about the changes.

exactly, I dont think I have even come close to less than 20% since as long as I can ever remember

but that is BS, its not supposed to be a law of averages here where I have to pay more because someone else doesnt pay anything at all.

who cares who refuses to tip, what does that have to do with someone who does tip.

Increase the freakin wages then, dont automatically attach a 18% charge, that completely defeats the purpose. so now you have to pay 18% and the service could be awful?

Its about time to just get rid of tipping entirely, pay people what they should be paid and let their service dictate whether or not people use them again in the future. its getting ridiculous.

or if its truly to combat those who dont pay, then fine add a 10% charge or something, so the people who do tip can then go up from there. you cant put the automatic charge at the top of the scale to start with

because you know whats going to happen, the tippers will start leaving 25%, so then the owners will pay them even a lower salary

then we will here it again how they dont get paid anything

before you know it you are going to paying $50 bucks for a plate of pasta.

I've got to say that I don't like this policy either. It really does become a service charge, however, after I get to thinking about it, maybe those people who don't tip or who are poor tippers, wont' be going to these restaurants anymore and therefore, there are more open spaces for us!! :rotfl:

This is not really new. We have been charged an 18% gratuity on DDE purchases on and off for the past two years. We accidentally tipped double (38%!!!) and have watched the receipts like hawks since then. We would *always* be charged a gratioty if we were using the DDP in conjunction with the DDE. We would sometimes be charged if we were using the DDE alone.

In any case, it's not a big deal. We usually tip 18-20% anyway. Except I don't like tipping someone $9 to open up my $50 bottle of wine :rolleyes2.

Thats brilliant by Disney, god forbid they paid them more if they wanted to truly protect them. Its not to protect anyone but themselves

this ensures they dont lose staff while at the same time it doesnt cost them a freaking penny

LOL, I like that part of it!! It will essentially reduce the tip we leave, because we normall tip a minimum of 20%, but if they already have 18% figured out, we'll likely just leave it at that.

I'm so lazy that I normally just leave a tip equal to the discount! They servers are going to loose a couple of $$ from me.

Its amazing to me that if you tip anyway who gives a **** if they add it on. At 18% i will save money so its cool with me. (sarcastic) Ya ur right disney is a horrible company and they never take care of there employees ur right. Thats why there one of the top companies in business today.
