Wednesday 3rd January

DD and I woke up at 7am this morning and watched a bit of TV until we woke the boys at half 8. We got dressed and went down to Roaring Forks for breakfast. It was packed but we managed to find a table. DS is feeling very anxious but he managed to eat some bacon. We went back to the room and did a final check before closing the door for the last time at just after 10am.

We drove back to the airport and got there just before 11am. There was a huge line for Delta check in and at the sight of it DS started to get really agitated. I found a Delta rep and explained our situation and he let us use the 1st class check in desk. Once we had checked in we went to Mc’ds. DS needed 4 Yu-Gi-Oh more cards and there was one in particular that he really wanted. We all had happy meals and he managed to get 3 of the cards but not the one he really wanted. I sent him back up to buy one last toy and thankfully the one card he wanted was in this pack and he was delighted.

We finished our McD’s and went though security. DH was selected for “special” treatment and had to go through a separate line to the rest of us. He was frisked, his hand luggage thoroughly searched and had a swab put on his watch, belt and shoes. Once he was given the all clear he was told not to to give his boarding card to anyone else and not to let his luggage out of his sight.

We plonked ourselves down at the gate and the kids did plug and play with the Nintendo while I typed a bit of the trippie.

It was a long wait for the JFK flight but it soon passed. DD discovered a new trick – she finally leant how to click her fingers and drove us demented by clicking them almost constantly

We boarded on time and the flight was fairly uneventful except that DS was sick quite a few times. DD had been given some Phenegrin so she was great. Unfortunately when we landed at JFK it seemed there was a backlog of planes and we couldn’t get to our stand. We sat in a holding area for about 40 minutes. This meant it was getting very close to the take off time for our second flight. The cabin crew asked how many passengers wanted to make the Dublin connection and it seemed most of the plane did. They asked that anyone not going on the Dublin flight stay in their seats to let us off first. We all charged off the plane and ran to the next gate where the Dublin flight was delayed  so all that rushing was for nothing, never mind.

I went and got something to eat for DD, DH & I but DS wouldn’t eat anything. I gave him some Phenegrin to try and stop him being sick on the next flight and it worked (almost) There was an announcement that Delta were looking for 5 passengers to be bumped off the flight. I went to ask and they were offering $400 Delta Dollars per passenger, a hotel for the night plus a seat on tomorrows flight. I asked for a better offer but they said they could no longer offer the maximum of $800 that they had been able to do in the past and $400 was the max now. I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle for us but they did eventually get 5 people.

We took off about two hours late and due to tail winds the flight time was just under 6 hours. DS was sick only once and managed to get some sleep. DD also nodded off but DH & I couldn't sleep. I passed the time playing on the Nintendo. We landed in a cold wet Dublin at around 9am and waited ages for the cases to come off. We eventually got them and set off for the long term car park. I text my mum to let her know we were finally on the road and she was going to meet us at home with a cooked breakfast. The Phenegrin was still working on DS and for once after a Florida trip he wasn’t sick in the car on the way home from the airport. The kids and I nodded off and I woke up about 40 minutes from home.

We got in at noon and tucked into a much welcomed cooked brekkie. My Mum and Dad stayed for a while and then left us to it. DH and DS went to collect the cat and then DH caught some for a few hours zzzz. The kids and I managed to stay awake and we all went gratefully to our beds at half 8.

I’ll post a final thoughts bit with out highs and lows

Hello,

Looking at your photos I recognised the airport, its such a depressing feeling knowing you are going home and are sat in those seats!

Thanks for sharing your trip report

I know what you mean about the finger-clicking! My son who's 8 just learnt to do it a few weeks ago and WOULD NOT stop! I really thought it was going to become a habit, but he seems to have stopped, unless I'm just not hearing it anymore!!!! Thanks for the report!
