Pete,

Because I am a music teacher - I wanted to let you know the drum on the drum roll is pronounced TIMpani. (accent the first syllable.)

You probably know it better by the kettle drum. It is the big one that is similar to a bass drum sound but you can change the pitch of a timpani. A large orchestra could have as many as 5 kettle drums - all tuned to a different pitch.

Most small symphonic bands or orchestras have two.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Not a music teacher either, just a percussionist for a local brass band and previously the only percussionist in the school orchestra.

Thanks for stating that. I had to say it the right way in my car like 10 times to erase the wrong way from my head. I can't believe they didn't know what a timpani was, but I guess not everyone is a music person.

Kudos for posting! I was thinking the same thing as I was a band geek too! I was thinking to myself, how can he not know that?! Then I had to step back and remember that no everyone is a band geek like me ... but I'm glad there are a few others out there
