Timing is everything, isn't it? (political thread)

ever see photos of the Throgs Neck Bridge? the Whiitestone? the Verrazano? they're beautiful architechural examples of suspension bridges. people love to photograph them.

I read an article in the newspaper several months ago. a photography student was taking shots of one of the bridges for his class.

he was vaguely "Arab-looking". someone wrote down his license plat number and reported "suspicious activity."

the police took him into custody and questioned him, then let him go.

scary to think that could happen. and what if they'd labelled him an "enemy combatant"?

scarier to think it might not happen and the person could be a terrorist and blow up the bridges...

as I recall the DC snipers were caught because a motorist reported suspicious activity and the police checked it out, although the snipers were supposed to be using a white van....

The Constitution did not foresee the type of activity Padilla was involved in. I don't believe terrorist acts fall under the definition/umbrella of treason. Padilla was not attempting to overthrow the U.S. government; he admitted he was simply trying to kill as many Americans as he could through whatever means were available to him.

uh...mass murder has been around since biblical times. only the methods have changed.

what Padilla is alleged to have done amounts to nothing more than attempted murder. a crime familiar to the Founding Fathers.
scarier to think it might not happen and the person could be a terrorist and blow up the bridges...

they sell thousands of photos of those bridges in every souvenir shop in NYC. taking a photo is not "suspicious activity". if the photographer had been blonde, no one would have noticed.

And John Kerry is just your man. Didn't I hear that he flipped the bird to Mr. Samply, the head of Viet Nam Vets against John Kerry? In front of school children no less.

ROTFLMAO!

So, what is it this time? NewsMax or Sludge? Regardless, here's the link to NewsMax:

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/5/31/225546.shtml

You forgot a few details.

Here's the sequence of events:

1) Confronting John Kerry at the VietNam Memorial Wall on Memorial Day

2) telling Kerry to step away because Sampley felt Kerry didn't belong there,

3) flashing a "Hanoi-John" t-shirt at Kerry,

4) showing that t-shirt to a group of schoolchildren

5) and then telling that group of schoolchildren that "Kerry does not belong at the Wall because he betrayed the brave soldiers who fought in Vietnam."

Geeez, I can't understand why Kerry got upset!

Btw, for those of you who don't know who Ted Sampley is, he's the same guy who accused John McCain of betraying veterans while Bush stood by in South Carolina.

Some standard bearer that Ted Sampley. LOL!

you would trust this man to run our military/ country.. if he let's something that simple upset him to the point that he acts that way in front of children... a mature MAN in control of himself would just laugh it off,,,not act childish about it..

I'll take the good judgement of the Founding Fathers anyday over this administration.

I'm guessing you would then have to change a lot of you long held political beliefs, if you really mean what you say.

Next time, it could me or you or any number of people. And, I have no doubt in my mind, this administration would take full advantage of the upheld decision.

Planning to plot against the US, are you?

How many "blondes" have declared war on the US? How many "blondes" were among the 19 hijackers on 9/11?

While it's true that no all arab looking folks are terrorists. How many terrorists recently have not been "arab looking"?

dmadman -- Padilla and John Walker Lindh are converts. they are hardly "Arab looking."

Terry Nichols and Timothy McVeigh easily blended into the Oklahoma City crowd, didn't they?

we should not let xenophobia dictate who is "suspicious" and who is not.

what Padilla is alleged to have done amounts to nothing more than attempted murder.

Actually, it amounts to substantially more than that. He has essentially signed up to take up arms against the United States of America. As such it really isn't that difficult to see how he could be considered a non-uniformed "enemy combatant"... You may disagree with how such situations are being handled, but clearly this is more than a simple attempted murder case.

proves my point. it's either mass murder, or it's treason -- both of which were not unknown to the Founding Fathers.

I think they're rolling over in their respective graves over this matter, by the way.

Just to play devil's advocate, look at it this way. Padilla can be considered a non-uniformed combatant against the United States. As such, he has no rights whatsoever. He can also be considered a treasonous U.S. citizen, in which case he retains some rights. Is it so difficult to see that it's not black and white?

Sampley sounds like a real winner. ugh.

Be that as it may, I gotta wonder about Kerry's temprement to handle the Presidency. Let's what we have so far:

Calling a Secret Service agent an SOB
Calling the Republican party the biggest liars and crooks he's ever seen
Tell a citizen that it's none of his business what foreign leaders he may or may not have spoken to.
then, flipping off another private citizen because he couldn't handle the heat.

Yep, sounds like he and McCain would make a GREAT ticket.

Make sure to keep the football away from the both of them.

websters defines treason as attempting to overthrow the government or assisting their enemy in war,,

he was neither attempting to overthrow the government, nor assisting the enemy, since he took up arms he was joining/becoming the enemy..... from what I've always been told assisting would be such acts as providing info/ or such...not actually fighting with...

So, in the 20+ years of terrorism committed against this country, the best people can do that are against profile are McVeigh and Nichols? Other than perhaps the Unabomber, how many more examples of them are there? I got 19 Arabs in one day, plus a bunch more on the FBI's most wanted list. McVeigh and Nichols were anamolies. You'd have to admit that. I know profiling sounds mean and awful and what not, but hey.. again, I don't see too many blonde haired, blue eyed people advocating the death of Western Civilization.

Again, I asked, outside of McVeigh (which I would contend is a random act) how many terrorists plotting and commiting acts of violence against the US have not been "Arab looking" compared to those that are?

I posted a news story last week that linked mcveigh and nichols to an Iraqi soldier, and showed that mcveigh met with terrorists to learn the fine art of bomb making.... if there is any truth to that story, they do have the middle east connection..

I read about a guy, ex-marine who fired at people from on top of a tower in the sixties. He killed quite a few. He was white.

Are you including mass murderers, and cult leaders, in your definition?

there's a difference between mass murderers/ people who have flipped put...and a group of people determined to destroy the US....

here' s the story I mentioned..the third terrorist

oops...correction...

The McVeigh defense team uncovered evidence that indicated Terry Nichols might have received bomb making expertise from Al Qaeda explosives experts based in the Philippines.

We know that this small-time Kansas farmer of modest means took expensive and unexplained trips to the Philippines, many times without his Filipino mail order bride. The court record reveals the Oklahoma City bomber was in Cebu City in December 1994 at the same time as the mastermind of the first World Trade Center attack, Ramzi Yousef.

Did these two men cross paths? According to the sworn statement of the co-founder of the Muslim terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, which is a spin-off organization of Al Qaeda, Terry Nichols and Ramzi Yousef met personally to discuss bomb making in the early 1990's.
