Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Has anyone used iron-on with their tie dye? I am trying to figure out how to get some wording on the shirts but I have to do this in secret so that I can surprise my kids. Some advice would be appreciated:worship:

I was thinking about getting the black t-shirt and "bleaching" it. I think my hubby might go for that one:sad2: easier and quicker than the normal tie dye. But I might be able to convince him to wear the shirts:rolleyes1

Thank you

You can do iron on as long as the iron on is not transparent.

I don't like the bleach thing because the bleach on the black would look rusty instead of white but I understand that it is easier.

I love the string backpack!! Where did you find a plain cotton one to dye?

Thanks!!

We made some shirts last year and they came out great. Debating making more for this year's trip.

Hi, I made them, found the cotton at the fabric store and the strings are cotton too.

Sorry if this question has been asked already; I read back a bit and didn't see it.

After you've tie-dyed and let it sit for 24 hours, you are supposed to wash it. If I wash all my shirts together, will they blend and be ruined? I live in an apartment and it costs me $1.50 per load to wash something. :scared1:

Yes, after you let them sit for 12 - 24 hours you HAVE to wash them, you can wash them all in one load (depending on how many you have) if you have way too many you might wash them twice or separate, it will not run you other shirts as long as you don't let them sit weat in the washer. I do not wash dark colors with light colors just like you won't do your normal clothes but if they are lighter colors or all darker colors is fine.

That is a relief. I was planning on making 6 shirts and to wash them all separately would have been timely and expensive! My building only has one washing machine so I would have been down there all day, lol.

We wore the shirts that I just made and the ones from last year. I had a number of folks pay me compliments and about a 1/2 dozen of the resort cast members asked me about them. The best compliment came when a gentleman ran me down when my girls and I were leaving a store to ask me where I bought my shirt. And my shirts look like child's play compared to some of the ones posted in this forum! Thanks again to all those who have contributed to this thread!

PS - I'll post some pics after I get all of the photos off of my SD card.

That is great Brett. Did you get my reply? It looked like my message didn't go tru so I was wondering.

Thanks so much for the instructions for these! We did our very first tie dye shirts last night! We did 4 of them. I did 2 and my husband did 2. On his, he got a little dye happy and his Mickey bled and lost shape. Any tips on how to fix it without having to make a new shirt? I've seen some people stitch it out and thought I read about a bleach pen?

Here's my first try. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. I think with practice they'll be even better.

Pixie, can you post the file for the Mickey head that you use? Also, do you have any suggestions for patterns for a dinosaur and butterfly to go in the middle of the spiral?
(I am tie dying with some friends who are not going to Disney, but they still want in on the fun! :goodvibes)

Thanks! :hippie:

I'm the one that did the Dino. I just drew the outline on tracing paper for my DS's shirt and then upsized it for the adult shirts--I should have made his tail longer on the adult shirts--oh, well. I use a blue washable pencil for tracing (or drawing) on fabric. I also use light purple thread so that I can see my drawing line and my stitching line when I go to place the rubber bands.

I need to get my guitar tie-dyes on my desktop so I can post a pic of them. For them I free-handed each of the shirts and then stitched the outline. I wish I had taken it all of the way up the shoulder instead of stopping about an inch from the shoulder seam. I've also done a set of crowns but they don't show up very well because I used a light yellow (lemonade) from a kit and it's super light and the other colors I used with it were fairly light too (light orange and pink)...I will have to try that one again in a different color combo. Maybe Yellow, pink & purple....

You can do anything that is not very detail specific like the Mickey Heads or the Dinos. My DH wants me to do a Tink but I haven't decided how to get Her without all the details....I've also considered doing Palm trees, christmas trees, jack-o-lantern, race car, train, Donald, Goofy...maybe even Minnie.

DF wants a Donald shirt, so I have been looking for a template. If anyone finds one, please post!!! :goodvibes

Roxy Can you tell me which Dharma dyes you used for the back pack? It seems that you used a pink instead of a red.

Do you use any type of thickener in your dyes because your lines seem very crisp. Or do you use a little less water than called for so they don't bleed as much. Thanks so much for your help and I love your pics. They always make me want to do more tie dye.:hippie:

Hi!

The color of that Mickey is Fuchsia red. And No, i do not use any thickener or anything, just urea as instructed on the dharma site, 1 tablespoon per 8 oz of water and I use the same amount of water as instructed on dharma, 1 teaspoon per 4 oz unless the dye has the * which means double.

Help me remember...do I wash my shirts before stitching the Mickey on? I do don't I? It has been 3 years since my last dying party...Thanks! :hippie:

Yes! You want to wash and dry the shirts. Make sure you don't use a dryer sheet or fabric softener.
