Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I haven't checked recently, but I first found Synthrapol at my AC Moore. It was around $6, so with a coupon, about 3 bucks. It is a small bottle, but you don't need alot, just a capful or so. To me, totally worth the investment. My jacquard colors have never run together when I use the synthrapol!!

I have never seen the detergent at Michaels. Guess I'm lucky to live in an area that has BOTH Michaels AND AC Moore!

I used Chocolate Brown on those shirts, they look super cool.

Pixie ~ Did you ever do the hoodie? I ended up just buying a regular school spirit one (at least for this year!) because I couldn't find a white hoodie better than 80/20 around here and didn't want to wait for one to be shipped since the season is not that long and was already underway when I thought of it!

Just wanted to pass along that my Target had white 100% cotton muscle shirts on clearance for 98 cents each yesterday.

Hi, I order a couple 90/10 finally found some. They should arrive tomorrow, I think 90/10 would be fine, the socks I made were 80/20 something like that and they look nice.

You are now a great resource to this list, because you can help all of those who only have access to RIT dyes.

For anyone determined to use RIT dyes, I highly recommend going to www.ritdye.com and reading BOTH the "Dye Techniques" and the "Tie Dyeing" Instructions and following them.

So, just a few points:

-Using hot water to mix the dye and keeping it hot while dyeing is important.
-Using salt in the dye bath is important.
-Using soda ash with RIT dye is useless and a waste of money.
-The RIT dye will fade. It will slowly continue to fade in the wash throughout the life of the garment, so don't wash it with anything that could get ruined by the dye running, even after many washes. The tip someone posted about throwing in a few Shout Dye Catchers is a good one.
-RIT dye is bases on the "right" amount of dye to use per pound of fabric. Not as easy as "2 tsp per cup of water" for the fiber reactive dye. If you get great results with a certain recipe of RIT dyes, please keep track of them and post for all of us!!! (I know, I said I never want to do shirts with RIT dyes, but, you never know!!! I am always interested in learning new techniques!!

I am still quite pleased with my shirts. They have now been washed 3-4 times each (my son loves his and is now wearing them to school - high praise for an 8th grader!). They have not faded any more from the initial washing that I can tell.

I want to comment on the things you said...

DEFINITELY do NOT follow the directions on the RIT dye packages when using them for tie-dying. My SIL had tie-dye instructions that we followed, I am not sure if they were from the RIT site or from another tie-dying site.

I disagree about the soda ash...we used it with our shirts. We ran out of the soda ash soak water when we got to our last set of shirts. Those from that set were the ones that turned out badly. The red was basically pink and all the dyes seem to run out and fade worse. The soda ash had to have been the difference there, everything else was the same. Also, it may be why my shirts are not fading as people seem to see with RIT in the past.

I am continuing to follow this thread, just in case there's someone out there like me who wants to do these shirts and doesn't have access or can't afford the other dyes. Plus, it's fun to see the projects. Some of you guys really make a lot of shirts. I can't imagine needing more than a handful per person!!

Just a heads up - if you have a Dick Blick's Art Supply store near you, they carry the Jacquard Procion MX dyes for tie dying. You can also order them and all the supplies for tie dying (bottles, soda ash, synthropol, etc.) online!

They do have a couple of kits with the primary colors, some kits are for a few shirts and others for more.

A few pages back, I mentioned offering to help the swim team dye shirts. The count is in and 100 people or just over, will be dying shirts on October 23. The swimmers range in age from 6-18. Parents will also be dying shirts. One family ordered eight shirts.

Heya I have a question, with the Jacquard Tie Dye Kit (not those stupid iDye packs...grr) So when you buy the kit, it says it has 4 bottles but only 3 colors. What is the 4th for?

Oh and another question. Say you buy the Procion dyes from Dharma. How many dyes do you get from one little jar? Are they one-time use, or do you get a few uses out of them?

It to mix your own color in once you have added the water to the dye in the other bottles.

Hi. mmmm I brought one of those Jacquart kits a while ago from Michael's but mine had only 3 bottles, red, yellow and blue. Not sure, it might be a different kit.

About the dharma dyes, the darker colors, like brown, blue, black etc are mark with one * or ** you need to add more of those per oz of water, but you go a long way. To make a little 4oz bottle (like the kits bottles) you only need 1 teaspoon on most of them, darker 2 teaspoon, black 4 teaspoons.

Let me take a quick pick of a regular color to give you an idea.

OK dear, here is a pic of the 'fancy' dye, this is a pink color, 1 tsp per 4oz of water (i use urea in my water) one of those kits bottles.

And this is the turquoise, here we need 2 tsp per bottle, therefore you get more dye in the jar. Same with the brown, and most dark colors. Black takes 4 tsp.

Hope you get an idea, I also use Urea, and the fabric detergent.
