Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Hey ladies! I am heading out for WDW in the morning- so I thought I would come share one last pic before I head out! I hope everyone has a great week- filled with lots of groovy Tie Dye!!

PS- DS made the shirt he is wearing! I just tied it up and he did all of the colors! I am sooo proud!!

Wow, the black Mickey heads and the bright colors look fantastic! Did you use black dye? Great job!
:goodvibes Thanks! Yes, that is Dharma Tradings "new black" - I love it! You just have to be careful when you use it, bc you can't bleach the area around it- it turns brown!

:laundy:

Can someone tell me how far below the mickey outline do you stitch? also when you band how far below the pucker? I've ruined so many shirts and would like to get it right for once. Also how far apart do you guys stitch?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!:goodvibes

I use a washable marker to outline my Mickey, and literally sew ON that outline! I would say my stitches are about 1/4 inch big.

I did about an inch of rubber bands right were the floss is pulled tight to create the pucker.

me to! :hippie:

sorry, deleted...pics didn't show up...will try again...
To answer your question about the dyes- the Dylon dyes are not fiber reactive, so they do not stay as vibrant as the dharma dyes (or Jaquard which is also fiber reactive)- it really is not too expensive to order them, you can get 3 cans of your primarys for less than $20 shipped (at least in my area) I would say that is enough to do 15-20 shirts depending on how much dye you use per shirt!

Okay, so my first ever tie-dye is done! I did a total of 6 shirts (and my co-travelers did another 30 among all of them!). My results were so-so. Only got 2 that I really dislike and that might not get worn. Three are pretty good though they faded a LOT more than I expected in the wash. One I think is pretty awesome, but it was SOOO much better before it faded in the wash.

I would post pictures here but I have no idea how to do it! LOL.

Again, thanks for the instructions and all the tips! I couldn't have done it without you guys.

Here's the shirts I made...(hoping this works!!)

First four shirts all for my DS, age 13

Shirt 1 - first ever attempt - I think it's a great spiral but too much white. (Didn't want to try a mickey head on the first attempt)

Shirt 2 - This was an accordian fold pattern suggested by my SIL
100_1725.jpg

Shirt 3 - This was a rolled up longwise like a rope and banded.
100_1727.jpg

Shirt 4 - A combo of the mickey head and my cousins rope method.

Shirt 5 - funnily enough, this one is my shirt and it's my FAVORITE of the batch. :-)

Shirt 6 - my hubby's. He isn't thrilled about it, but agreed to wear it. We ran out of time to sew, so I bleach-outlined his on after they had sat the 24 hours.

I wish my colors had stayed more vibrant. I did do a soda ash soak. Used Dyson dyes. I wonder if more time in the plastic wrap would have helped? Or do the cheaper dyes just not stay as vibrant as the Dharma?

Thanks again!

p.s. Yay, got the pics to work! Thanks Tinker...I was pasting in the wrong code!

You are welcome! Its an easy mistake especially if you have a myspace account, you are used to doing everything in HTML!! When do you guys leave?? Dont worry- my DBF had to wear a shirt with pink in it last year- haha- so he is pretty happy about wearing black and red/ blue and green this year!

We will be in the Kingdom from 9/19 to 9/26! Only 3 more weeks!!

My sis and I are going to have a "rescue" dye session this weekend. My father's shirt turned out REALLY pink. Like not even faded red remotely, totally pink. LOL. So we are going to do another for him & also 3 more for adults that we left out the first time. (when they saw how cool they were, they changed their "no matching shirts" stance) Woohoo! I will probably redo my DS red & black mickey head and do the spiral instead of the ropey kind. I LOVED my spiral, but I was trying not to boss everyone on the whole project so we did some of their ideas too. LOL. Now I know the DISers know best. :thumbsup2

We have a crazy large group going...19 people. 10 kids and 9 adults. My family, my sis and her family, my parents, my cousin and her family, and my husband twin brother and his family! I know we are nuts!! So if you see a mob of people wearing tie-dye shirts in September, it's probably us. Teehee.

Oh my gosh!! How fun- what a huge group! The only way I could ever convince that many of my family members to come with us would be to get DBF to marry me at WDW! hahaha! I have been dying to have my parents join us for years- but they "just arent that into it" (BOOOOO!!!)

You might get yourself a 40% off coupon and head to Michaels and try the Jaquard Kit- I really think you will be much happier with the colors. Although, it doesnt have red or black in it- just your primarys- fuschia, turq, and yellow.

Tinker, I'm sorry I missed sending you off! I hope you have a great time in Disney World, and I love the shirt your son made himself.

My son just asked me today, "Mama, how did you make my colored shirt?" That's what he calls all his tie dye shirts. So I explained it to him, and I think on the next round, I'm going to be brave and let him do his own. :goodvibes

I think you did a great job first time out! I really love some of those different techinques! :thumbsup2

Alrighty!

I finally got photobucket to work for me, so here's my last round of shirts. I should be doing another tomorrow morning as well. :goodvibes

These are my first tries with the Dharma dyes, and I really love them. I may double up on potency the next time around to see if I can get deeper colors in certain ones, but other than that, I was quite pleased.

- Tinker, I like it when you do this style, so I thought I'd try it. I almost felt like I had more control using a corner of the shirt than the center!

And yes, those are my toes in the bottom of some of the photos. I thought I moved out of the way! :lmao:

Does anyone know what the formula is for mixing up the soda ash (Sodium carbonate) with water? I just purchased the pH plus and can not remember how much to add to the water. Thanks for the help.

I love this thread!!! I'm getting shirts ready to dye. I went to Michaels today and got some resist. I made a tink with it. Now my question is when I dye it can I do it a spiral or does it have to lay flat? I don't want to mess up my tink resist. HELP!!!

Gosh, I'm not experienced with resist. I just wanted to say glad you're here and wish you luck with your shirts! :goodvibes

Thanks for the welcome. :) I've got an eeyore and an ariel that i'm working on too. I can't wait to see what they look like when I'm done.

Hiya :) I'm kinda new around here, and I just *love* this thread!! I love anything crafty. I want to make some shirts for our upcoming trip, and I was curious if anyone knows where to get a dress in a 3t or 4t. I figure if anyone would know, it's all of you :)
Thank you so much, I love the inspiration! I hope I can get good enough at this to contribute.
