Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

That is sort of what I did on mine, 1/6, but I didn't mix the colors. They just mixed on their own.

I've already made two sets of these wonderful Mickey-head tees. Now we will be going on a Disney Cruise, and I want to do something special for the trip. I'd love to have waves or something in the design - does anyone have any ideas as to how to do this, or any other ideas?

I found another thread about using a flour and water to make a paste and then you use the paste to paint a mickey head on the shirt. You let that dry and then you use spray paint. Once the paint is dry you wash the shirt it kind of looks like a tie dye shirt.

I wanted to try something different so I found clip art of a skull and cross bones to make pirate shirts. I used the paint program on the computer to make adjustments and ceated a template. I then used a fabric pen to trace my pattern onto the shirt. I was not able to get the flour and water paste correct so I found a Color Block by Tulip (it was next to the spray paint) and it worked great. Word of advice: I was trying to save the Color Block and put it on thin, well my spray paint went through. I went back on my sons shirts and splattered paint randomly to make it look like I did it on purpose.

However, the boys loves there and thinks they still looks cool. These are my sons shirts.

Here is my shirt it is still drying.

I love the pirate shirt photos! You inspired me to finally get the photos from our cruise posted. It was very fun to wear them--the hardest part was getting everyone together for a photo when they were doing lifestyle photos. The night we all wore them, my son went into the gift shop for something & the cm said "People have been coming in all evening asking where to buy those shirts." Thanks for all the instructions, tips and photos.

I just finished the dye process on my shirts. We'll see how they turn out tomorrow! It was a mess, lol. I'm a little worried about how they'll look. My 6 year old helped and splattered colors several times.

So, to those that have tried this with different dyes, which do you think is best? I am thinking of buying the Jacquard or Tulip at AC Moore. I have a 50% off coupon. I want my shirts to have bright color but I don't want to spend a fortune either. I will have 100% cotton shirts and will soak in the soda ash. Do you think I'll be Ok with these dyes? Or should I splurge for the Dharma?

I believe those dyes will work fine IF you use the soda ash and urea. I think those two ingredients make the difference! Have fun! We're getting ready to do some for our October trip, LOTS of different colors this time!

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to get the supplies today or tomorrow and probably do these next week. I have to work on them while the kids are at school since this whole trip is a big surprise. I hope it stops raining here long enough to get it done outside.

I use the Dylon dyes found at WalMart and I think they work great. I did dye some new shirts before our most recent trip, but I haven't taken any pictures of them yet. I like the color of the navy blue out of the Tulip kit though. I also use the soda ash, but have never used urea.

I used the Jacquard (sp) funky groovy kit. Used a 40% off coupon for Michaels. It was very reasonable. Came with gloves, dye,yellow, cyan, fushia, instructions, soda ash and rubber bands. I think it turned out great!

Cool! Thanks for posting the pic! I just bought the large Jacquard kit for 10-15 shirts and the smaller funky groovy kit. I figure I'm doing 8 shirts and I'll start with the large kit and have the smaller one for a backup in case I need it.
I think your shirts look great! I'm really excited now. Just washed the shirts. I'll start sewing tomorrow and hopefully get the dyeing done early next week while the kids are in school.
