Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Ok, this is the first time I've seen this thread. I found the written instructions, but couldn't "picture" it....I'm DEFINITELY a visual learner! LOL! So thank you SOO much for posting your pictures for those of us who are instructionally challenged. :cool1:

I dyed my shirt and am letting them soak overnight. Tomorrow, after I rinse them, then what? Do I wash them in the washing machine? Also, I saw something about letting them dry. Do you not dry them in the dryer? Hang dry? Thanks!

We washed all of ours 2 or three times after they had been rinsed. We didn't see any significant fading as a result. We never put them in the dryer though. I don't know if it would fade them or anything I just felt safer letting them hang dry.

I'm so proud. Looky what I made!

Yes!

Oh and I forgot to list my supplies, all bought at JoAnn's:

Tulip soda ash
Tulip Tie Dye Kit in "classic"
Tulip One-Step fashion dye in "purple"

DD's shirt: Target. Cherokee brand, 95% cotton, 5% spandex.
My shirt: Target, Jerzee's brand from the men's department, 100% cotton.

I let the dye soak for 9 hours.

GreyGoose, that came out great :thumbsup2 I have GOT to get to gettin' on my shirt and my daughter's shirt. I'm a slacker :rotfl:

I've already made two sets of these wonderful Mickey-head tees. Now we will be going on a Disney Cruise, and I want to do something special for the trip. I'd love to have waves or something in the design - does anyone have any ideas as to how to do this, or any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Followed directions at beginning of thread using Tulip brand Soda Ash & two of the "Classic" colors kits. I think my husband did a better job than I did, but we had a blast making them and I plan on doing some with my kids this summer when my sister comes to visit.

Got LOADS of compliments in the park. A couple of cast members said "that wouldn't happen if you kept your whites & colors separate in the laundry!" A few people asked where we bought them and I told them I made them with directions from the "disboards" (and 2 people actually wrote down the website so Hi if you're here!) One of the perks of wearing these was when we had to baby swap on some of the rides it was easy to pick out my family by their shirts if they went whizzing by (BTMRR, EE, etc)

You could do the mickey heads in blue and then take bleach pen and make waves inside of it?

Thanks to MNRMommy for posting the original instructions, and everyone else for their photos and tips. After reading it all, my daughter-in-law and I made shirts for 12 of us going on a cruise in March. The 2 boys shirts in the 1st photo are Cherokee ultimate tees from Target, the baby's is a Garanimals from Walmart. The 3 ladies in the next picture are Cherokee classic tees from Target. The rest are men's Jerzees from Target. All 100% cotton. We used a Dharma Trading Company kit for "about 20 shirts". We also bought their deep purple dye and new emerald green dye. We have some of everything left except the soda ash.
Yesterday in the middle of dying, I said "I have no confidence that these are going to turn out at all!" Mainly because it is such a messy process! But we are very pleased with the results and had a great time doing this.
I had bought special elastic bands at Hobby Lobby for doing tie dye. That is what I used to tie below the Mikey head on most shirts. They were not as tight as regular rubber bands, and those shirts have less white around the head. If you want a lot of white, use tight rubber bands--the more you use, the more white you should have. We used Glide dental floss for sewing. We also wanted a lot of color so we paid special attention to the tips about getting the dye down into the creases and using it until the fabric was soaking.
If you're on the Magic March 7th, you should see us coming! Be sure to stop & say hi! Shari

1drifter---Those look great!! I'm going today on my lunch to Michaels to get the soda ash. I have a Tulip 3-color kit (fuschia, yellow and blue I think), but it doesn't have soda ash in it, and I want the colors as bright as possible, so off to Michaels I go! ;)

You really were ambitious with these and they look super :thumbsup2

Thank you Bondfan for the compliment!

Since we had a lot of fun with these, I knew I wanted to do them again. If you have an A.C. Moore near you, they have a coupon that was in yesterdays paper (or I think you can print it off the website) for 50% off one item. I went today and bought the Tulip Ultimate Tie Dye Kit for $11 after the coupon. It has 5 bottles of turquoise, yellow, purple, lime & fuschia plus an extra packet of each color to refill the bottles. Says it does up to 20 shirts. (Just for reference, I used 2 bottles each of red, yellow & blue on the Mickey head shirts and paid $12 for the 2 kits using 40% off coupons)

Let me see if I can get this to work. I made these for the kids today (&yesterday).

Wow! That's tiny!! Hope you guys can see it! LOL

I got this idea from an earlier post in this thread. The poster used fabric paint to make Tink and Stitch. My boys love Stitch so I gave it a try. They didn't come as good as the OP, but my boys loved them. We were there during President's week, so these shirts made it easy to spot them in the crowds!

Those stitch shirts turned out great! I just spent the last several hours dyeing a new batch of shirts, so we'll see tomorrow how they turn out.
