Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Mickey outline?? Where is it? I have looked in the thread - I am sure I am missing it. I did read where someone used a plate...I do not have one of those. Where can I find a template? These heads all look terrific. Kuddos to everyone for their great shirts!

Is it suggested to prewash the shirts?

It isn't necessary but it probably wouldn't hurt, especially if the shirt has chemicals on it that would keep the dye from soaking in right away. It was suggested in some earlier posts also that "curvy" women put the shirt on and then trace the mickey outline so that the mickey head as the outline will be stretched out if its done while the shirt is off. Make sense?

I did these with the kids today, not as time consuming or detailed as the tie dye ones we did, but I still thought they were cute enough to share

We did our disney trip sept 17-20, 4 dayer..

I did tie-dye for my wife and i for all 4 days, normal tie-dye heads for two of them.. One black and orange for the halloween party, and then a spiral tie-dye that i put a stencil over and sprayed with some screen printing ink.

Heres me with the screen printed one.. (I left it sparce cause i wanted to see some of the coors through it)

And we ate at Chef Mickey's on the 21st before we drove home.. and saw some other tie-dye mickeys! (the only other ones we saw..)
Looked good!

I also tried to spot some of the iron-ons.. i saw one family i "think" but quite frankly most of the designs here anymore look so good its hard to spot them!

I saw two different families with tie dyed mickey shirts on so far this week. On Saturday I saw a mother and daughter in line for Buzz, both wearing purple and white ones. On Monday I saw a whole family heading into Toon Town wearing blue shirts with turquoise heads on the backs. I lost them after they went into Mickey's house, so couldn't say hi. I'll keep my eye out for more this week.

Those are cute - how did you do them? Did you use a bleach pen? Might be something I could do with my 3 and 6 year old grandkids.

My guess is they were white shirts that where bunched and tied (where the white lines are) and then dyed in a blue dye bath.

You can get pretty cool looking single color shirts if you just take a freshly washed and dried (No dryer sheet or fabric softner) white shirt and cut the top off of an empty 2 liter bottle and shove the shirt into it dry. As tight as you can and then pour the dye solution over top of it untill its just submerged.

Can use two colors also if you like..

Then wait 1 hour then apply the dry soda ash on top and leave for another 4+ hours (upto the next day)

This allows the dye to seep through the shirt and give it a crinkle look with a single color. (will be lighter in the tight spots and darker where the shirt was looser.)

Then the soda ash activates the dye and sets it into the shirt (it desolves in an hour or so once you add it on top)

Sorta like the below shirt.. Its got alittle yellow and red in it(done before the blue), but the blue was done with the bottle method.

Can you put an iron on transfer after you tye dye a shirt? I thought about doing this for one of the sets of shirts I am making for my boys for our next trip! any info would be great thanks!

Yes, you can put an iron on after you tie dye it..

I would just wash it twice before doing it to make sure all the loose dye is washed out.

And make sure you don't use fabric softner or dryer sheets. before you add the iron on.

Also, If you have a shirt that has some kind of printed design on it already you can tie-dye them also!
I'm not sure about tie-dyeing an already "iron-on" shirt, never did one of them, but i have done other "store bought" (screen printed/ect) shirts with designs on them.

Cool! Thanks for the quick response. I figure that if we do MNSSHP next year, my kids will be wearing costumes so I figured maybe I would do an orange and black(?) tie dye shirt for me and hubby with a mickey pumpkin on it!

Hi all! My sister & I and our family's did this project and I've posted a photo of the finished products and a report of our experience in my pre-trippie (last post) which you can get linked to through my signature. We didn't have total success like some of you on here did! But then again, we had a lot of kids and we aren't great at sowing and had never tye died before. We used 3 different colored Rainbow Rock kits from Wal-Mart.

If you have any questions about our experience please feel free to ask, either here or there.
