I am going to try this for the first time.....
????Does anybody know how to get a stick family shirt made????
We had our designs made by one of the wonderful designers here on this board. There should be a thread for it - you may have to dig for it, but it's there. (I'd reference it for you, but we're visiting my parents and I'm using their dial-up modem.....)
I'm a newbie to tye dying, but I love the Tye-Dye Mickey shirts! I just had a question...Do you think I could mickey tye-dye pillow cases? I know nothing about the various dyes, and plan on just picking up whatever I like at Jo Ann Fabrics tomorrow, but is it safe to dye a pillowcase that I'm going to sleep on every night? Just wondered. If/When I do, I'll post pictures!
Yes. Just make sure that the pillow case is 100% cotton. Otherwise the dyes will not take. That, and wash it a couple of times before using it. I'd love to see how it turns out!
I am finally getting up the nerve to do these but I have a couple questions.
#1. I noticed some people said that they did the dental floss stitching just outside the pencil line and some said that they did it right on the line...which works better?
#2. Once it is stiched and pulled tight do you put the rubber band right on the pencil line/dental floss line or do you go a little below? Also how tightly do you want that area? I know that the tighter the rubber band the more white but just trying to make sure that I dont mess up the 15+ shirts that I am doing.
TIA!
Answer #1. for me, it all depended upon the size of shirt. For DH's, I went outside of the line. For mine, I went on the line, and for the kids, inside of the line.
Answer #2. You just band it as close to the dental floss as possible. It's all bunched up, so you do your best to get it on there. I used thick rubber bands (3/8 inch wide, or so), and got those puppies as tight as I could. I used two on the bottom, but a bit of the dye will seep through.
for my last shirts, I left the mickey head white, so I wrapped plastic wrap around the head part, and wrapped rubber bands around the whole thing to keep it white. But I would do at least two rows of thick rubber bands to have a more deliniated line if you're going to dye the head, too. (Make sense?)
also, here's a tip: I used Glide dental floss, and that stuff just slid out so easily from the wet shirts when I was doing the final rinse. I had used regular stuff before, but it was harder to get out.
I'll post the photos of us in the shirts when we return home in a couple of weeks. We got a lot of comments on them!
