Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Dont know if this has been asked before (attempting to read every post but am going to AC Moore in 2 hours).....I bought Lime Green shirts to tie dye.....should I have gotten white? Wont the die not show up the colors I chose because the color of the shirt and the color of the die will combine to make another color? Or does the dye completely obliterate the color of the shirt. Hope this question makes sense. Thanks.

Yes, the dye will combine with the color of the shirt to create a new color. Get a darker shade of green like kelly to make a pretty shirt. Just remember to think about which colors combine with green to make a specific color. Stay away from orange--it will probably turn brown! :goodvibes Good luck and show us when you're finished!

Thank you so much for all the tips. I followed the directions on this thread and my shirt looks good, I think.

OK seeing how you all are using a bleach pin and some one said you might need to practice....what if you too a WASHABLE marker - that ones that come out in the wash - crayola - then draw your head with that, THEN trace over it with the bleach pen....just a thought.

I am finally getting up the nerve to do these but I have a couple questions.
#1. I noticed some people said that they did the dental floss stitching just outside the pencil line and some said that they did it right on the line...which works better?
#2. Once it is stiched and pulled tight do you put the rubber band right on the pencil line/dental floss line or do you go a little below? Also how tightly do you want that area? I know that the tighter the rubber band the more white but just trying to make sure that I dont mess up the 15+ shirts that I am doing.

TIA!

Has anyone used the simply spray on paint to create tie shirts with Mickey or other designs. I have ADD real bad and the website and looks so simple to use and finish a product.

Also, for the people that use the flour and water mixture do you use the simply spray paint as well and if so which kind the screenprinting type or the softer dye.:teacher:

This is my DH's Shirt, he liked it. The Mickey head didn't came out the way I wanted but maybe we can fix it. I'll do better on the others, perhaps more ink.

Thanks

I like this one just like it is!!! :thumbsup2 I like seeing more white like you've done, so it's not all bled together in one clump, know what I mean? The Mickey head just looks like he's wearing a mini tiara :rotfl: But that's easily fixed with just a little dab of bleach on a skinny liner paintbrush ;)

I am going to try this for the first time.....:hippie:

????Does anybody know how to get a stick family shirt made????:confused3

Wow, I love these shirts and can't wait to make some.

I loved Miz Diz's Stitch shirt in post 259. She said she used a fabric paint pen to paint Stitch on and then dye dyed the shirt. Has anyone else tried this? I would love to make one like that in addition to the Mickey heads and would love any advice.

Thanks for all of the photos of your shirts, you have given me a fun project for summer vacation!

I'm a newbie to tye dying, but I love the Tye-Dye Mickey shirts! I just had a question...Do you think I could mickey tye-dye pillow cases? I know nothing about the various dyes, and plan on just picking up whatever I like at Jo Ann Fabrics tomorrow, but is it safe to dye a pillowcase that I'm going to sleep on every night? Just wondered. If/When I do, I'll post pictures!

We had our designs made by one of the wonderful designers here on this board. There should be a thread for it - you may have to dig for it, but it's there. (I'd reference it for you, but we're visiting my parents and I'm using their dial-up modem.....)

Yes. Just make sure that the pillow case is 100% cotton. Otherwise the dyes will not take. That, and wash it a couple of times before using it. I'd love to see how it turns out!

Answer #1. for me, it all depended upon the size of shirt. For DH's, I went outside of the line. For mine, I went on the line, and for the kids, inside of the line.

Answer #2. You just band it as close to the dental floss as possible. It's all bunched up, so you do your best to get it on there. I used thick rubber bands (3/8 inch wide, or so), and got those puppies as tight as I could. I used two on the bottom, but a bit of the dye will seep through.

for my last shirts, I left the mickey head white, so I wrapped plastic wrap around the head part, and wrapped rubber bands around the whole thing to keep it white. But I would do at least two rows of thick rubber bands to have a more deliniated line if you're going to dye the head, too. (Make sense?)

also, here's a tip: I used Glide dental floss, and that stuff just slid out so easily from the wet shirts when I was doing the final rinse. I had used regular stuff before, but it was harder to get out.

I'll post the photos of us in the shirts when we return home in a couple of weeks. We got a lot of comments on them!

I've read that you should soak in soad ash but the Rainbow Rock Tie-dye kit I purchased at WalMart doens't have any and it says no presoaking is necessary. Should I chance it or head out to the craft store to get soda ash???

I did one set of shirts with the product that said no presoaking needed and one with the soda ash. The set with the soda ash came out better. Don't know if it was fluke or what but I will use the soda ash from now on. :)

Looks like I'll head out to get some...also does anyone know if Arm &Hammer Washing Soda is the same as soda ash???? iF so I already have some here!

We are finally making our tye die shirts this weekend for our upcoming trip. Quick question - do I wash the shirts first without fabric softener to remove the sizing as I had to do when I was doing iron on transfers?

Thanks, Carol
