Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I love these !! I want to make them for our all girls trip in December.

The directions are great- thanks OP !!

I don't understand about the dental floss part- sewing ????
Like w/ needle and thread....

I did it with a needle and thread about this far apart: ___ ___ ___
I guess you could do it with a basting stitch on the machine but I found it quicker to do by hand then lug out and set up my machine.

DD's school is tie dying this week so I am getting a trial run. So far yesterday we tied. Some kids used a fork and twisted like they would long spaghetti noodles until it looked like a cinnamon bun and some made sunbursts ~allowing the material to pooch out (kinda like the mickey head) and then rubberbanded it below. I tried to make some kind of heart shape for them but I'm not sure if it will turn out looking like a heart. After this I think I will be primed for our Mickey Head Tie Dye Shirts. I actually went to Salvation Army and picked up some various white clothes to dye (including some really cute tops for DD)

I'm thinking about ordering my Dyes from Dharma. Three colors come with the kit: Yellow, Fushia, and Turquoise. I would like to order an extra color or two. Any Suggestions?

I found this on photo bucket.
it looks like they may have used a transfer for the Mickey Heads though

Sorry for the late response but yes, I found that that Dharma kit had everything I needed when I did my shirts (I was the one that did the crystal dye method instead of the rainbow twist which most folks think of as tie-dye).

The Dharma dyes are wonderful -- I love all the color choices. We did 5 shirts last year and have plenty of dye leftover so will be doing more shirts this weekend in the same colors but making purple the primary color instead of the blue we did last year.

Just remember that Dharma took a LONG time to ship their product. I'm used to "normal delivery" of 3-4 days ... it took nearly 2 weeks.

And I'll try the bleach swirly Mickey this year, too!

I can't wait and will post pictures!

Thanks

I know the kit comes with 3 colors that mix to form other colors but I most likely will order 2 other colors as well. I noticed that the kit I was going to buy says it makes 20 shirts but it only gives you 1oz of each of the three colors. Which kit did you get? Also did you have picts of your last year shirts? If so where is it in the thread?

Thanks!

DS has the flu so I missed the tie dying at DD's school. Awe shucks!

I may attempt to start sewing the mickey head on some of the shirts i've aquired so far

You can never have too much information so here is another site with some helpful tips on tie dying in general

good luck everyone.

I'm surprised Dharma takes so long with their orders. I couldn't believe how quick my free catalog came. I swear they must have overnighted it!:rotfl:

sorry it's so huge, can't get a medium sized picture.
as you can see, i used 4 common colors so we would be able to spot each other. I used the bleach pen to define the mickey heads - had to completely redraw mine & DD(in stroller), on DH & niece i made the outline look like starbursts. We even got complements from a castmember in Ariel's Grotto.

I'm not sure which kit I chose...maybe it was the one for 20 t-shirts and since I only made 5, that's why I had leftover dye?? We used turquiose, lavender and peacock blue for the main shirt and fushia for the Mickey head.

Here are the shirts in a "pseudo-water" pattern.

Three of the shirts had too much white on them the first time, so I redid 2 of them (my DH liked his with the extra white on it...his is the one in the middle.) However, when I redyed it (remember I just sprinkle the DRY dye on in the method I used), the fushia ended up spreading since it was still wet.

Well, I'm still stitching the MH on the back of our new shirts so we didn't get to do them last weekend. Hope this rain stops so we can do them this weekend since we leave soon!!!

This time I'm sewing the MH tighter and will use the bleach pen to either outline the MH or to do a swirly MH. I didn't like how our MH bled so much last time.

I also used a MH outline that has the ears further apart so I'm hoping this time the MH will be more defined.

I feel your pain ... I think we're drowning!

I forget, where are you located? I'm near Dulles Airport. I hope that these 3 days of rain (expected tomorrow, too) will (help) eliminate our drought conditions!

A teaser for the thread...we just got done dying our shirts...we did the crystal method again but this time used Lilac as our primary color and a bit of baby blue and smidgen of peacock blue. Then we added yellow which we didn't use before to give us green -- these shirts will be "wild" compared to our other blue ones. We used fuschia again for the Mickey head.

I'll wait the 24 hours so probably won't have pics to post until late Sunday or Monday.

And it's raining now, so we finished just in time!!

Ok, here are this year's tie dye shirts.

I really like them and all the colors and patterns that show up. We added the Mickey swirl this year with a bleach pen.

My critique: If we do this next time, we won't let the bleach sit so long since it really made our fuschia turn pink. Also, we put the swirls a little too close together. But no worries, we learn a little more each time we do these.

I really like the sunburst pattern around the back of my MH.

Ok, so if you see these shirts in WDW -- say hello!

Great job - I wouldn't have expected the colors to turn out the way that they did, but they're very pretty!

Have fun on your trip, fellow Virginian!

Yep, me too! I thought the Lilac would mean they would be a light purple. Oh well! You can't predict these shirts!:rotfl:

Yeah Marshay They look great!

You're DH's Sunburst looks like a Mickeyburst ~cool!

I was all set to order from Dharma but then with the $15 shipping charge decided to just get a couple kits from Michaels using 40% off coupons. The dyes may not be as good but we will just have to give it a shot. I also bought some soda ash to soak the shirts in before dying. I hope to start sewing the Mickey heads this week.

I still need to get a bleach pen (i better put it on my list) I know someone probably said this already ~ but do you use the bleach pen after letting the shirt dry or while it is damp?

thanks
