Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Reporting live from WDW ... the tie dye shirts are another HUGE success!!!

We met so many more dissers this time b/c they saw the shirts. It's much easier to see the tie dye shirts than the LGMHs (although I did make a 7" LGMH to hang from my Bagallini, too)

Anyway, if anyone out there is on the fence about making the shirts-- let me say -- JUST DO IT!! We have 2 different ones now and I'll definitely make another one for our next trip!

(I suggest that you do different styles of shirts, if you like change or going in hot weather...I have a regular t-shirt, a v-neck with a little frill around the neck this time...next one will be a tank top!) Even May is hot!!

I completely agree. I have a tank dress and the original shirt. I want a tank top next.

I have to also vote for the tank top. DD and actaully changed out of our shirts midday because it was to hot. I did make DH a sleeveless, he wore it all day.

It was left white...the shirts were perfect looking. It was the dye from the rinse that turned the white areas pink. I see plenty of photos here where the shirts have white spaces... how does every one do the rinsing. As I said I had perfect Beautiful Red white and blue spirals...I dryed them first, heat set them even and then I rinsed the extra dye out in the cool water....Maybe I used tooo much dye. I used liquid rit dye and Just judged amount of water to dilute with. The shirts look ok, but dull since there is no white in them.

Your problem is the rit dye. It just bleeds too much. I used the dylon dyes from wal-mart and mine turned out great. I have heard the Dharma dyes are great too, but they are expensive and their shipping takes a long time. Hope this helps.

Thanks... I thought It might be the rit dye, as it seems everyone elses pictures had white spots in their designs. I was only able to find the dark blue I wanted in Rit, so I will look around again. I still have time. I did not want to try again by buying all new stuff
just for it to happen again!

I rinsed mine while they were wet. I forget what dye I used it was a kit from Michaels craft store. we squirted the dye on and then wraped in plastic wrap for 24 hours. Then I rinsed as much as possible in the sink before taking the bands off then rinsing more in the washer with just a bit of soap. I may next time order some dye from darma (I know I spelled it wrong, LOL)

if you have a good craft store around you, you can get procion mx dye. it is the same stuff that dharma is. We used it and it turned out GREAT. and it beats paying shipping. We got ours at Pat Catans but alot of artist supplies stores carry it too. Good to look into.

Ok so I finally took the plunge! I'd never tie dyed before, so those of you who are still on the fence, just do it. It was fun! And I only had to fix one of mine. I bought the Tulip Brand ultimate kit from Michaels. It had Blue, Purple, Green, Fuchsia, and Yellow. But we didn't want to use the yellow this time. I let them sit for about 15 hours. I rinsed most of it while still banded. My daughter's turned out perfect, I had to fix mine with the bleach pen to avoid the blob. I don't know why hers turned out so good and mine needed a little help. But i'm happy either way and we can't wait to wear them.

Disbugsmomma, in post 522 you posted the pictures of your shirts. My question is how did you get the ears on your mickey so defined???

OK...my friend and I did 14 swirl shirts yesterday with the Mickey head in the middle on the front. We have them wrapped and will take them out on Monday (3 days in plastic). After we rinse them in cold water, we'll hang them up until almost dry and then put them in the wash. My question is about water temperature in the wash. I reeeeally don't want to wash on hot due to shrinking. My DH won't wear it if it is tight. Can you wash on cold in the washing machine and still be OK?

I stitched along my line instead of outside it and wrapped the rubber bands REALLY tight so the top of my rubber band line was just barely over the floss. As far as I know, that's what did it. I think I used a different Mickey head than most did too.

This is the one I used, I just sized it right, printed it, cut it out and traced it. I did discover that using a regular pencil is not a good idea, the lines do not come out very well. Hope this helps.

WOW 3 days in plastic. Thats alot of time in the plastic. How could you leave it in there that long with all the temptation to see how it turned out? Will that be safe to leave it in there that long?

I am planning on doing some of this shirt design so I will try it the way you did and see if I get such nice results. I like the one with more definition better but I also like the other look so I guess either way it turns out I will be happy.

I actually ended up with a little more white around the MH than I wanted. I think I used 3 or 4 rubber bands on each shirt which made the band about an inch wide. If you want less white I would make sure your bands are bunched tighter, about 1/2 inch or so. I also did not over saturate the Mickey head, I held it so the head was pointed down for a minute after I applied the dye. (Oh the things you forget over 3 months )

Step 2: Sew basting stitch with wax dental floss (make sure it isn't mint or anything like that) just outside the traced Mickey head shape.

Looking back now I think I am making my basting stitch too tight and close together because I am not able to pull it together quite as well as the pictures.

I attempted a tie-dye mickey shirt this weekend. When I asked DH what he thought it was, of course he said a heart. When I told him it was Mickey he said, it looks like a heart, but if you wore it at disney I can see it.
I think it was my floss sewing, so I'll be trying again (hopefully) before we leave next Tuesday! Here's my first shot ...

I bought some tees at Target today so I can make some Red, White and Blue ones for the 4th of July.

What do y'all think - should I leave the Mickey head white, or do something else? All I have is red and blue dye, but I could walk over to AC Moore to get another color. Just looking for ideas...
