Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

do you really need to use the urea? want to do mine this weekend and need to know if i need to use it. I bought the Jacqard powdered dyes just because they had them at my local store and the shirts i made before used that type but in a kit.

Awesome shirts! So glad to see this thread keeps getting new photos!

Thanks for posting the swirly Mickey! I think I will do that design with our next shirts for May trip!

Ok... I tried the regular tie-dyed mickey. Here is what
we got... purple is DD's, green is mine and blue is Dh's.
I put the mickey "pattern" back down on the shirt and
dotted around it with a sharpie to further define the
mickey head. It shows up really well on the green
and purple, not so great on the blue one. I think they
turned out really well for my first attempt.

Thanks for yet another great tip!

I did no touch up work to these as I thought I might have to. Cant wait to actually start making these for our trip. These three were trail runs to see if I could do it. What do you all think of them?

I think they look great!!

We're making our second set of Mickey tie dyes in the next week for an upcoming trip. That way we'll have matching shirts for every day we're there! :)

I'll post new pics when I finish those...

Hi all. It has been a LONG time since I checked in on this little thread I started ages and ages ago and I just wanted to say great job to all who have tried it. Also, I love the pics of everyones shirts and have gotten many new ideas from all of you for our next trip.

When we went in Sept 07 we made DD and myself dresses, which I will post a pic of, but I would like to give a little warning to those of you who do tanks or tank dresses. DD was sitting next to me on TOT and she grabbed a hold of my shoulder strap and pulled so hard that the dress no longer covered what it needed to cover. Needless to say a well placed backpack had to cover me until I could get into a store and buy a tank to put under my dress.

Happy tie dying everyone:hippie:

Your dresses turned out GREAT!!!! That's funny about needing an extra shirt to cover with :)

OK, this is a true story.
We got back from WDW Sat night, I plug in my camera and get all the pics of it, halfway through the slideshow, the computer DIED!!!!! I think it is the power supply, but until I figure it out, it is holding all my vacation pics hostage! So until I get the PC fixed, no pics.

BUT, our shirts came out AWESOME! We did 2 sets, one for each day. The second set sat overniht, and they came out ALOT brighter. We used the Tulip kit from Micheals, with no soda ash, but they came out great. Notes on the process:
We used plain string instead of floss, and no bleeding problems. But we used the plate-bowl-bowl method of making Mickey Heads, so the ears were more spread out than using a template so they didn't run together. One ultimate kit will make 2 adult shirts and 5 kid shirts. Unless you let the kids do their own, then one kit will make 4 shirts. really. My nieces was still soaked the next morning when we unwrapped them!
LOTS of compliments everywhere we went. I can't believe that my first tie dye attmept came out so good.
The trash can at Animal kingdom even noticed! He followed our kids singing "Hey everybody, its the same shirt family! Look at that family, they are wearing the same shirt!"

Hope you get your computer fixed so we can see your shirts! You aren't alone, we just got back Sunday night, and while we were at Disney I was fumbling around in the dark and caught the cord and pulled my laptop off on the floor, now it says there is no hard drive UGGG. Thank goodness for warranties!

Here are a couple of them, we planned to get a whole family pic but we got rained out the day we all wore them :(

lucigo. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the swirly Mickey. Of course your little boy makes it even cuter! I am going to attempt to make some of them for our trip with our granddaughters in September. CAN'T WAIT!

Ditto that sentiment! I do believe that you've started a new trend here! :thumbsup2

I have a question about using the bleaching pen. Do you rinse out your shirt, wash and dry it and then use the bleaching pen?

How long do you leave the bleach? Do you rewash it afterwards. Just trying to be prepared in case I need to do that.

I dyed my shirts today and will rinse them tomorrow morning.

I made the shirt and then waited until it was almost dry but not quite. It hadn't been washed yet. Then I did the swirly when the shirt was still a little damp so the bleach bled into the design enough that it looked like part of the design and not just a hard line. Then I let it sit until it was completely dry before I washed it.

I didn't realize I was starting something new LOL I thought that was how the pastey mickeys were made when I saw the picture of them!

Here are pix during the process...

This is when it was damp, right after we unfolded it and took the floss out..

After letting it dry a little more, but still damp...

I think I can see where the bleach gel is on the second photo. So, did you just use one "line" of bleach, or did you spread it around?

It's all in the details, ya know! ;)

I just used one line of bleach and it bled into the fabric, didn't spread it around. I was actually surprised at how much it bled and wondered if I should have waited for the shirt to be dry, but it turned out ok in the end :)

Wow great thread with some great advise. I am going to help DD's school tie dye shirts next week. Tues we will be rubber banding and then Weds dying and Thurs finishing the process.

I have never tie dyed before so this will be a good warm up before doing our family trip shirts. I still need to go buy EVERYTHING for it but will read over the thread to see what the essentials are.

I am compiling my shopping list

100% cotton shirts
make a mickey head cut out to trace
wax dental floss
soda ash fixer
rubber bands
squirty bottles
latex gloves
bleach pen

I'm thinking of buying this kit from dharma trading (thanks to the person who posted that site!) It looks like they have good prices on their shirts too!

This is our own kit which we assemble for you. It's a good way to get started with tie-dye as it has everything you need, including instructions for various ways to use the dyes. It's not a bad idea to add a few more colors if you like and maybe a book like 'Rainbow Tie-Dye' to expand your design options. It's great fun, and a good way to spend a day with some kids or friends.

You supply the shirts, dresses or we can. Whatever!

three 8 oz. squeeze bottles
#1 Lemon Yellow 1 oz.
#13 Fuchsia 1 oz.
#25 Turquoise 1oz.
1 lb. soda ash fixer
1 lb. urea
4 oz. synthrapol dye detergent
50 rubber bands
one pair rubber gloves
1 dust mask
Complete instructions
This kit is $23.95

Everyone's shirts look so nice! I'm subbing so I can make some too. Thanks for the instructions, they're great!

I love these !! I want to make them for our all girls trip in December.
