Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I got all my 100% cotton tees at OldNavy.com. I bought a bunch for my family. If you buy 3 or more, you get $1.50 off each. Since I had to buy 9, it was worth the $5 shipping to not be running around looking for correct sizes. They probably have them in the store, also. Good luck! I will be getting my shirts done this week, hopefully.

yeah, that tie-dye idea is pretty awesome...maybe we'll do something like that before our trip to disney on july 7th, SO SOON!!!!

this is soo neat! i am going to go this week and get the stuff to do one for my son and myself. I will post the pictures when they are done

Thanks for the great advice and pics in this thread! I made spiral tie dyes at my daughter's birthday party. They're not mickey but still fun. After re-reading this thread, I decided to stick with just blue and red (no yellow) because I was afraid that with doing so many shirts I'd end up with a lot of muddy brown colors.

I ended up getting the big packs of undershirts from walmart, just going up to a larger size because they shrink. The hanes ones were nicer than fruit of the loom. I think I did ~20 shirts. It's all a big blur!

I will post pictures after I practice with photobucket.

Ok, here is one after rinsing but before washing. After washing they are a lot more pink & turquoise! In some you can see purple, too. When they're dry I'll take another picture.

Here's another gigantic picture of half of the shirts after washing & drying. I'm pretty happy with them. It was so much fun rinsing and untieing them - we couldn't wait to see what each one looked like!

Those look great!!!

Those shirts are great. Cant wait to start mine.:goodvibes

Hey great shirts all, I made a sweatshirt though cause I'm not sure what the weather will bring for my December trip!

I had to take the safe route too and paint mickeys head on because I was afraid to mess up and ruin a $20 sweatshirt!
I'm sure I will do it again and try a t-shirt it was sooo much fun!

I just rinsed out the tie dye shirts we started yesterday. I have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed in them, but I refuse to give up. We used a Tulip dye kit because...well...that's all that's available around here. The box said that there would be enough dye for 9 projects. Well, I already knew from the DIS that this would not be true. That being said, I didn't realize that 3 bottles of dye probably would only make 2 well-dyed shirts. I tried to stretch it to 2 adult- and 3 child-sized (one of which was quite small) shirts. Not a smart move. Also, I got the kit with primary colors. Yuck!!! The red and yellow are great colors, but they did not "take" to the cloth very well. The blue is a hideous inky (but not rich at all) blue. Of course, it "took" all too well. None of the colors in the swirls blended, although we did the dying by thirds as directed. The yellow and red did blend on dh's Mickey head, where he used his fingers to help blend the colors. The positives: The swirls are definitely there, so we have the strategy down. The negatives: I hate the colors, and there's not enough dye on any of our shirts. The plan: I'm off to Target to find some cheaper shirts then to Hobby Lobby to get some other colors of dye. (I only wish we had another brand available here!!!)

squeakymouse, if you don't mind spending a lot of money, dharmatrading.com has beautiful dyes. The sell kits with turquoise, lemon and fushia. I know the blue & "red" mix to form a beautiful purple, and I'm sure the yellow and blue will make a nice green. Their shipping is a little high, but they have great customer service and quality products.

In my pics I used their blue and fushia. It's more of a pinky red, but it's a very nice color! I want to try one with 3 colors but just couldn't with so many people. My next ones will be blue and yellow, I think, because I don't have a lot of red powder left.

mine are different because I didn't do thirds. I did 3 rubber bands to make 6 sections, the alternated blue and red in each section. The swirls are littler. :)

BTW, the second batch of my shirts came out a little better.

I've had great success using this dye, Dyson permenant fabric dye

colors are very vibrant and hold up well. They also have beautiful colors like lime green and fuschia and turquoise. They have them at Walmart in individual packs for $2 bucks a piece! Also you dont have to soak them in soda ash unless you want too, I made my sweatshirt with these and never soaked it cause I ran out of ash!
Good Luck!

I just got back from Michael's and all they had was the Tulip brand. After reading the comments from the previous poster, I'm nervous to try them. Has anyone else used the Tulip brand? I went to Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and Walmart and nobody carried anything other than Tulip. Should I keep looking, or just give the Tulip stuff a try?

I'd keep looking ,the tulip brand is'nt the best.

What about the tie dye kit from AC Moore? It is Groovy tie dye by Jacquard?
(I guess I should be glad it was on sale at AC Moore instead of Michael's.)
I have been reading these for the past couple of weeks and was planning on trying this one weekend soon.
I am only doing 2 sleeveless shirts, so I know I'll have enough. I got the primary colors (I have a boy) but was debating about buying one other color to make Mickey a different color.
I just don't want a lot of leftover

I used it. While it wasn't near enough, the shirts turned out great, and have washed now about 6 times and are very vibrant!:goodvibes

I also used the Tulip brand from Michaels (with the weekly 40 percent off coupon I got the large kit (five dye colors for 14 items) for about 12 bucks). I did five shirts, two adult, one teen, two child sizes. There was no extra dye, it only did these five shirts.

The colors are very vibrant (i used the soda ash soak first). I used shirts I picked up at goodwill (thrifty), and the girls shirts have some decorative trim, and DH now has a tye dye Old Navy polo shirt. They are very bright and turned out great.

I didn't cover the mickey part before dying the rest of the shirt, so the mickey head is a little multicolored, too, but you can still tell it is mickey. I think I will embellish just a bit around the mickey outline to make it really stand out. I really soaked the shirts in dye. I wasn't sure if you turn them over and do the back of the spiral too, which I did, but that is when the colors bled onto the mickey head. Be sure to wrap that in plastic if you want it to stay one color! They were sopping wet with dye and it was very messy, but fun.

If I can master the adding photos part, I will post them here, before and after the extra mickey embellishment. I did the boys shirts in blue, yellow and green. The girls shirts are mainly pink, purple, yellow, with a little blue and green. (thrifty me, didnt' want to "waste" any dye, so I used the rest of the blue and green on the girls shirts, too)

I didn't do this on all of the shirts, but wish I would have. Just under the rubber band of the mickey head, make sure you use a contrasting color of dye. It will make the mickey head stand out more!:laundy:

turning 40, first resize them or they will be VERY big! Then copy the IMG code(the last one). Hope that works for you.
I went and looked at them, they look great!
