Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

So i've been a bought some hand dylon dye - (all i could get here in UK) But I'm confused how you mix it. do you add powder to bottle and then water? How much? instructions say weigh fabric then give no idea how you break it down, or do you make bucket load as per instructions on packet and then fill bottle. The intructions on packet only talk about dying single items not tie dye. I plan on doing 2 adult and 1 child shirt with 3 colours.

Thanks

I've never used this dye since its not for tie dye. Maybe you can google some directions. I know is a permanent dye.

I made this shirt for gift (DIS give) ...Looked pretty cool...

What did you do the lettering with? I am wanting to do shirts like this but don't know if I should iron on letters or what...

I have tried and failed to make these. Is there anyone that would be willing to make me one, I would gladly pay for your trouble???? The family is taking a disney cruise for christmas so would love to have some to take with us. Please email me at debra930@gmail.com if you can help me out. :santa:

I have agreed to make these for our upcoming Disneyland Family re-union. I have to make 18 shirts in various sizes. We have decided that each family is going to have their own Mickey color for the Mickey head but other than that they are going to be random tie dye spiral shirts.

My question is do you guys suggest anywhere for buying the dye? It's been awhile since we did any of these and I had allways bought the kits at Hobby Lobby or Michaels when I was just doing the four for my family. I was thinking there must be a better place when you are dyeing 18 though.

If you're planning on using the fiber reactive dyes, Dharma Trading is the best place I've found to get them. Prices are better than our local art stores, there is a huge color selection, and you can get larger containers at a lower price per ounce. Shipping has always been super fast, too - even though we're on the other side of the country, I've always gotten my order in just a couple of days.

Dharma Trading Company!!!!

I have used Jacquard and Tulip...they are sufficient. However, use the dyes from Dharma and you'll immediately notice the difference. I got such better coverage from Dharma than the others.

Prices and shipping were not bad. The dye goes a long way.

Thanks to both of you! :hippie:

Anybody here try other Disney icons for the tie dye shirts? My 4 yr old asked for Donald. She remembered when we wore our Mickey tie dyes to Chef Mickey's and Donald gave us a hard time about it! :lmao:

What I'm planning on doing is an iron on applique of Daisy and Minnie on my dds' dresses after just doing the normal swirl tie-dye. I'm going to use my Cricut to cut out the face pieces and am using Heat 'n Bond ultra to adhere it to the dress.
I kind of have to since the dresses had a bit of a tag thing-y on them near the left front hem of the skirt. I used a seam ripper to remove them, but there is a small hole that was left, so I need to cover them up. Since ds really wants Lightning McQueen I'm thinking that's what he'll get.

I would assume that a quality Iron on paper could work to do Donald- just print him off and iron him on.

Hoping for HELP

I attempted to do a shirt and it didn't come out so well. There is a lot of white and the mikey head isn't distinct or recognizable. What do I need to do different?? :confused3 It was a rough go, so the color isn't an issue at this point.

Thanks in advance!

I know this is not a character related but just in case you guys want to try. I made this for our workout classes, we do yoga, zumba and spinning so I made a couple for my team... I made pants too.

I followed the first page of this thread. I drew Mickey head, stitche with floss. pulled string. wrapped with rubber band... twisted until it was a danish shape...... :confused3

Mmmm looks like you did all the steps correctly :confused3 for what I can see maybe it wasn't thigh enough or the stitches were too lose since you didn't get a more defined shape.

How did you do this? It's really cool to have the black make the color pop.

I know that this is a long thread but it is helpful to read through it as many posts elaborate on the the initial instructions. A lot of people have followed those instructions and had varying degrees of success. They have come back to explain what went wrong or give additional detail. So here are a couple of thoughts.
1) your Mickey head shape. Use a design where the ears are set farther apart. One of the initial outlines in the thread has a design where the ears are more Upright on the large circle which makes the space between them narrower.

2)Stitches- smaller is better - and pull the thread tight when you gather it in.

3) Rubberbands- Pixie Dust is the pro on this. She always gets a distinct head surrounded by white- she puts a lot of wraps around the gathered head. This makes the rubber band tight so that the die doesn't get in and builds a space around the head. She has pictures posted somewhere showing this. Pixie Dust can you provide a link???

4) White- you really have to use a LOT of dye and push the nozzle of your dye bottle down into the folds. The first time I did this I thought I was doing this, but my shirt came out with too much white. The next time I worked harder at getting the dye down into the folds. I thought I would end up with a muddy mess, but it turned out great. Your danish should be dripping dye.

Remember- it's tie dye-- each one is unique/none perfect. You can do some minor corrections. On a couple of my heads I used some extra dye to round out a couple of ears. Others have used a bleach pen to add some definition.

I didn't realized that my instructions are on the other thread, :/ I think is on the arts and crafts board.

I will have to look for those instructions. And look for another mickey head. I tried again last night. It turned out much different. Before the other info was posted. Anyway, I think the floss was different.

I did read through the thread, but couldn't remember how far any additional info was. Where is the arts/crafts thread?

To limit the amount of white in a shirt, one has to get dye into the folds, as a PP mentioned. If I don't like the way a Mickey head turns out, the bleach pen is my friend. I center the Mickey head template over the error and trace it with the bleach pen. Sometimes, I like the way the head looks outlined. The outline makes the head pop.

This is a shirt where I enhanced the head, by painting on more dye.

This shirt is an example of outlined.

This shirt I corrected the mistake by removing all the dye with a bleach pen. I planned on redying the area, but my DD thought it looked good as it was.

Has anyone had any luck with 50% cotton, 50% polyester blends? I am doing a bunch for a family reunion and had everyone buy their own shirts to insure they fit (everyone is scattered across country). I said to buy 100% but got these 50 50's in the mail so I'm hoping I can make do.
