Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Has anyone had any luck with 50% cotton, 50% polyester blends? I am doing a bunch for a family reunion and had everyone buy their own shirts to insure they fit (everyone is scattered across country). I said to buy 100% but got these 50 50's in the mail so I'm hoping I can make do.

No, since tie dye is fiber reactive, meaning it will only react or on natural fabric. You can use them, but they colors would be dull and no matter how much dye you apply. Good luck!

I was playing around with one of my DH's junk shirts that had polyester in it. it would not take any dye and it wouldn't bleach out either.

Bummer. That's what I thought. I think I will "try" one so I have an example of why I am going to buy some replacement shirts. That way they understand I would have if I could have.

Thanks guys!!

You should exchange the shirts because you will be wasting your money and all the work, time, it would be better to get the cotton shirts. Sorry :/

Ok, how do you do it with the dark streaks on the color? I'm reading through the whole post, but I'm WAAAAY back on page 102 still, so I have some time to catch up yet. ;)

But, this is one of my favorite styles, so I definitely wanna do this :)

I know this is not a character related but just in case you guys want to try. I made this for our workout classes, we do yoga, zumba and spinning so I made a couple for my team... I made pants too.

I am totally blanking out. I haven't tie dyed in a few months. When I baste and use the floss, do I use it as one strand with a knott or double string?

Ok, I figured that out. Now I am still blanking on the process. I am going through the thread, but so far haven't found all my answers.

So I rubberbanded the Mickey head. Do I do the rest of the rubberbanding before soaking?
Then I use 1 cup soda ash per gallon of water right?
Then I soak about 40 minutes and then squeeze out. This is where I can't remember if I was to rubber band before or do it now.
Then color (i'll look on the dharma site for mixing), letting it soak for at least 24 hours.
rinse out well and wash. I think I got that part down. It's the beginning that I can't remember.

Well I was doing fabulous till I put it in a bag and it smeared all over itself. What is the trick for that?

Thanks for the great instructions!! My daughter and I made a shirt and it turned out great. We only had a 50/50 shirt so it didn’t come out bright. It was a practice shirt to see if we would want to make more. My son was just approved to make a Wish through the Dream Factory and he is still deciding between NYC and WDW. If he picks WDW we will for sure be making more for our trip!!

Well it came out pretty darn good, If I do say so myself. Not perfect, but good.

I made 2 more tday and again, I have a problem with bagging it. I can't get it in right without dripping all over the thing.

I picked up the Jaquard kit (all that HobLob had, aside from Tulip). It listed something like dye fixer on the package, so I did not grab soda ash. Does any one know if it is the same thing? I have to go back tomorrow and get shirts, so if I need it, I wil grab some.

Yes, the dye fixer is the same thing as soda ash! Soda ash, sodium carbonated, PH UP... Same thing. Sodium Carbonated not bicarbonate...

All these great shirts has encouraged me to try my hand at some tye dye shirts for our upcoming trip. I will probably just buy a kit at Michaels/Joann's. I hope to find a rainbow or green/blue kit. If they turn out alright I will post pics.

I haven't tye dyed in years but maybe you could wrap the shirt in saran wrap and then bag it.

I bought a tulip tye dye kit today that came with the colors, rubberbands, gloves. I bought soda ash seperate since it seems to be in the directions on this thread.

Even though it didn't come with the kit will it be ok to use?

I think tulip has it built in it already.

The Tulip dye does have soda ash pre-mixed in the bottle of color. It won't hurt anything if you use it, in addition. I've done it.
