I was at Wal-Mart yesterday picking up some travel size items for our Disney trip and saw this new thing -- Tide travel packs. It's a 3-pack of tiny Tide detergent that it says you can use in a sink. If you just need to wash a few things (socks, a pair of shorts that got spilled on, etc.), this seems like it would be a lot more convenient and easier than finding a washing machine, and you can just wash it in the sink and hang it to dry in the bathroom. Just thought I'd share in case it sounds like it would be useful to anyone else. :goodvibes

Great idea! Hopefully they will not be taken from you. When I was flying home from Bahamas in November, I had Shout Wipes (individually wrapped) and dryer sheets taken from me by TSA officals in Bahamas (US Gov't workers stationed in Bahamas). Believe it or not, they took these items from my checked luggage (you have to carry your checked luggage through Customs & to the TSA folks who randomly search luggage before being allowed to put it on a belt for checking it) Anyway they took these items - particulaly the dryer sheets because of the "Flammable Hazard Risk" - I was told that the dryer sheets might ignite in the heat of the airplane! :rotfl2: (Um.... aren't dryer sheets supposed to work in the heat?....)

Yeah! You'd think they'd just make the clothes in your luggage softer, not ignite anything. LOL! Well, this could be a whole new marketing slogan for Bounce -- "Makes a whole plane full of luggage cuddly soft!" :)

I hope they don't take the Tide, but if they do, then I could say "The Wonder sailed with no Tide." :rotfl2:

professorandmom I just have to ask the obvious....doesn't it seem like the TSA officials needed to do their laundry?

Agreed. they also took my liquid Tide for the same reason. "Flammable Hazard". My DH sort of kicked me (the oh so subtle ways they have) when I complained and said by that same logic no one should travel with Shampoo either! Of course he was right, it wasn't worth the delay - and someone saved themselves a stop at the store on the way home from work! :rotfl2:

Brilliant idea! I love the thought of avoiding the ship washateria...

I wish Tide would make a companion product called cruiseline dank bathroom dry-quick...although the hair drier could be counted on to provide a slight drying heat for a short-term blast...Just don't forget to take along some zip-loc bags for that still-damp laundry...Honestly, though, I have given up washing things out in the bathroom...they never dry enough to wear. Stain control, ok, but total wash? I think that's how some verandah dwellers get size 12 surprises from neighboring verandahs...Also must be why many cruisers take multiple bathing suits...ewwww nothing like trying to squeeze into cold wet bathers..even in the tropics..
:thumbsup2

Note to self: put small amount of tide into sample size shampoo bottle and make sure not to mix shampoo bottles when showering

Note to all: I did email customer service on the TSA website (for fun) to see what they officially say about tide and bounce (brand names not changed to protect the innocent)...I'll post when/if I receive a reply

Yayyy!

Dis-ers need to know!...and I'm not kidding...

Here's a bone head question...asked to protect my sample size tide bottles of course. Would they still be taken if they were in my carry-on bag and not checked in luggage? I'm quite protective of those little buggars. I looked everywhere for them.

:) Well given that I was told "M'am, with the air turbluence, the liquid (Tide) would shake around and might combust - you know start a fire in your suitcase". Me: "Um, does that mean my washer is in danger of blowing my house up? I guess I better up my homeowners policy. I knew never liquid detergent could be so dangerous to anything but germs..." <insert kick from DH here> :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I guess anything is possible. Heck - the carry on bottles of Bacardi 151 WERE allowed - but not the liquid soap! Guess booze is better than bubbles! :rotfl:

Update from TSA:

Email response was: "please call 1-866-289-9673 for an answer"

So I called

And, the answer was rather interesting, I thought. According to the polite but firm TSA agent I spoke with, screeners have complete discretion to remove anything they wish - the un-approved items list is NOT inclusive -

Now, she did say a person should be able check these items (I asked about laundry detergent, didn't specify liquid or powder and dryer sheets) but when I explained that they had been taken, she quickly repeated "at the screener's discretion" anything can be removed.

(Oh, and she explained that anywhere with washing machines sells dryer sheets and detergent so you shouldn't need to fly with them...I didn't go there)

Wow

So, I think the official answer is, "maybe, maybe not"

Barb

Hmmm. "Screener discretion" means they can take anything they want. LOL! OK, well, the "Tide" travel pack is small -- it will fit in my back pocket. I can put it there and walk through security because I'm sure it won't set off the metal detector alarm. :)

I do like the idea of putting liquid detergent in a shampoo bottle, too. Guess we just have to be more clever than the screeners. :rolleyes1

From the Tide people:

I don't have specific information about taking Tide on an airplane. However, our MSDS sheets are available on-line at http://www.pg.com/msds I checked both Liquid Tide and powdered Tide for flammability ratings. On MSDS there are ratings 1 to 4 with 4 being extremely flammable and 1 being slightly flammable. Liquid Tide is rated a 1. Powdered Tide is rated a 0. So, it doesn't sound like these products would be a concern on airplanes. Of course, it's up to the air-lines to set their own rules about what may be carried on board. You may want to check with the airport that you are using.

So I guess you could bring an MSDS with you for proof that "screener discretion" is way off

When you give that much power to people who would otherwise be flipping hamburgers, this is what you get.

This reminded me of when the screeners in Mexico took my brand new pack of batteries for my CD player. They said they had to confiscate the batteries because of them being combustible. I think someone needed batteries, but I didn't want to fight. This was in my carry-on bag. They did allow me to take out my old batteries in my CD player and replace them with the new batteries for the flight, but unfortunately it was a big pack of batteries.

barb-

Thanks for checking on all that! I was really irritated about it - but like previous posters have said - maybe they were out at home of laundry supplies. :) . I almost wonder if they have a specific quota of items that must be reported. I really really could not understand how 151 rum, which is so flammable, could be allowed on and laundry soap, shout wipes, and dyer sheets taken. It really doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence that all the extra "security procedures" in place are really maker the skies safer to fly. (Not dissing anyone just an observation on giving up the personal freedom to carry laundry soap if I want to) :rolleyes2
