I am planning on visiting universal in february 2013. I realize that I cannot book a 2013 trip online at universalorlando.com yet, but I was playing around on the site to try and get an idea of the current pricing.

I am thinking about checking in on Sat 2/9/13 and checking out Monday 2/11/13 and I was considering getting a 2 park ticket for 3 days (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) for each member of my family (2 adults, 2 kids).

So I was using 10/6/12 - 10/8/12 as an estimate of what the cost might be in Febraury 2013 (just trying to get ballpark idea). When I go to book a vacation package (hotel and room) it lists the total price of the 3 day 2 park tickets as $626 ($163 for each adult and $150 for each kid). However, when I just go to purchase tickets outside of the package it lists the total price of the 3 day 2 park tickets as $588($153 for each adult and $141 for each kid).

Obvisouly, the difference in amount is not significant, but the fact there is a difference in amount makes me wonder if there is something I am doing wrong. I would think that if anything the ticket price as part of the package would be less. Any thoughts/ideas?

2nd question - separate topic
Since we are planning a visit for a relatively uncrowded time and will only be visiting the parks for 2.5 days do you think the FOTL and early entry would be worth paying more to stay at a Universal hotel. I would guess it would cost us about $200 more a night ($400 total) to stay in a Universal hotel vs. another Orlando hotel. FYI - we also will have our own car so driving is not an issue.

It's usually cheaper to purchase hotel rooms and tickets separately so I wouldn't wait for a package to come out. February isn't usually that busy so you could skip staying onsite and still have time to do everything you'd want...given the adequate amount of time.

It almost sounds like when you are pricing the tickets separately, They are applying the online purchase discount.

when you price as part of a package, You are getting the regular gate price.

As Metro said, It can sometimes be cheaper to book the hotel and the tickets separately. Unlike Disney with items such as the Disney Dining plan which can only be purchased as part of a package, I don't think there is any reason you need to link your hotel and tickets as a package at Universal. (FOTL and Early entry are a hotel perk no matter what kind of tickets you have or where you got them. The Universal Meal Deal is also available for everyone, and not just onsite guests)
