Tiaras, Tutus & Tie-Dye: A 5K Trip Trifecta - UPDATED: 8/2/11!

You should make a dinner for all the rest of us, and then just place a plate with a pound of cooked bacon in front of him.

On second thought, don't. He may leave me and ask Paolo to divorce you so he can have you all to himself.

:rotfl2:

Sure, why not! I won't lie, I'm already thinking about resorts. I know staying at a race hotel is the most convenient but I do still have a hankering for CSR. Just sayin'. LOL!

I doubt it'll be a race resort, but I would love to try CSR. I've never stayed there. Honestly, I don't really care where I stay as long as I'm with you. :lmao:

I have always wanted to try the 5k.

You should join us, hon!

Is it wrong that I want to know what the race resorts will be....NOW....? :lmao: I'm a planner people, I need to know my options!

I feel the same way. :thumbsup2

Ha!

Usually it's a value, a mod or two, and two to three deluxes. The BC/YC is very often in the mix of deluxes. I believe the Poly and the AKL were the other two this past year.

Pardon? Did you just say the Poly was a race resort? Your beloved Poly?

I have been so busy the past couple of days and I hate that it cuts into my Dis time. I would want to share a room with someone to help with costs. Also I joined a gym last weekend and tonight is my first meeting with a personal trainer (I get 2 meetings free) I am excited and nervous all at the same time.

I'm so excited for you to start your training and get going! I'm happy for you. :goodvibes

I think I've seen it as a race resort once. I think it was for the full marathon in January one year.

It was. My beloved Poly. However the price made me throw up in my mouth a little, so I settled on getting my Deeeeluxe fix by renting points.

Ok, I'm going to join in here. My DH has surprised me with a trip for Marathon Weekend in 2012. I committed to doing the 5k for that while he runs the full. I would LOVE to run the princess 5k with a bunch of DISers!!

Happy to have you here! And I see tie dye in your photo, which means we're kindred. :thumbsup2

Adding you to the list! Woohoo! Welcome. :goodvibes

Thanks for the welcome!! We did matching shirts every day that trip!! :thumbsup2 Hoping I can convince them to do it again. Guess if I do the packing, they won't have a choice!! :lmao:

I looked at the list for this coming year, and it was all the All-Stars, both Port Orleans, CBR, Poly, SSR, and AKL(listed under villas)

I'm guessing those might change.

It just occurred to me that my 5th anniversary is in 2014, so I very reasonably could work in an AP. I'm thinking February 2013 (princess trip), May/June 2013 (Mom's 50th birthday) October 2013 (family trip), and January 2014 (anniversary trip). Now to figure out how I'm going to pay for all these trips and to convince my Mom that she wants to spend her 50th birthday at Disney with her grandson!

That's really cute! I like it. :thumbsup2

Plus, it makes everyone super easy to find. We don't match exactly, but we theme our shirts together or at least get the kids in the same color scheme, that way it's easier for me to remember what everyone is wearing.

That would be some year! Tink and I figured it out and there was one 15 month period where I went an inordinate amount. It was lovely. :goodvibes

I have faith in your powers of DIS-suasion. :thumbsup2

Tinkerbellarella - Thank you so much for all the info on the 5K. I really knew nothing about it, and you really answered a lot of my questions!

I was in Disney during the Princess half weekend this year. We saw lots of the reacers - Saturday night wearing tiaras, Sunday morning in running gear and wearing medals in the parks on Sunday. I kept thinking how cool it was! I just mapquested some of the places I've walked, and I think I could "walk" a 5K with some practice, will have to see about running.

I would be interested, and hope to be in Disney that year, but would depend on if I could be there that weekend.

No problem! If you think of any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. ::yes::

Just think, we may have "seen" each other and not known it! LOL

It's doable for sure, it just takes training. I walk three miles 3 days a week in an hour. The other two days I work on my pace.

I would be interested, and hope to be in Disney that year, but would depend on if I could be there that weekend.

Shall I add you to the Possibly Interested list?

I'm guessing those might change.!

You know, I think that very well could've been this year's resort line-up too, though I'm not 100%.

It may not change much. I think they choose the All Stars because it's easier to dilute the extra people over all of those rooms rather than just in POP. I think they avoid Coronado Springs (CSR) since it's convention central. Plus, like the All Stars, those two moderates can really swallow the crowds. I think, traditionally, SSR and AKL usually offer the best in the way of availability. I have NO idea, however, how they choose the Deluxe.

One of the hardest, and yet, most enjoyable parts of any Disney trip is the anticipation. While it's SO HARD to see so much time on that ticker...

"1 year, 6 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, 13 hours, 12 minutes, 35 seconds until your next Disney vacation!"

I'm a firm believer in that much of the fun is in the planning. The daydreaming becomes distinct possibility, the distinct possibility becomes tentative plans, the tentative plans get thrown out of the window when the park hours come out, and then when you can make dining reservations, and then again because you have severe planning OCD and can't just let a sleeping dog lie...

Not that I would know anything about that.

But there is definitely some joy in creating lists and spreadsheets, and spreadsheets of lists, and lists of our spreadsheets of lists.

It's true, too, that having NO plans and flying by the seat of your pants, or tutus as it were, can be a lot of fun too. Winging it. Going with the flow. Not waking up at 4:00 a.m. EST to man the phone with the soul intention of being the FIRST person with that Cinderella's Royal Table breakfast reservation. Waking up each morning and only then choosing your adventure for the day.

One of the things I do is decide which of these types each trip will be. For example, when everything went to pot and my first trip with BF became a solo last September, other than my dining, I kind of operated sans plan. In Feb./Mar. the trip was a bit more structured, but still the perfect amount of carefree. My upcoming trip in Sept./Oct. is similar to this past trip only a little less structured.

And this 2013 trip?
Hmm... :scratchin

I actually see this being a planned, organized trip for me, especially if things pan out and we have DISers joining in epic proportions! ;)
The other reason being, that, having a 'planned' trip also helps keep my 'planned' training schedule on track.

While I haven't quite made it to the list/spreadsheet stage just yet, I definitely feel like I have distinct possibilities that are quickly becoming tentative plans.

Trip Details

My best guess at my dates: 2/21/13-2/26/13
Right now I'm thinking a 5 night trip with the very real possibility that this would shrink down to a 3 night trip. I figure start bigger and pare away. Lots of factors could affect this like available vacation time, room sharing, flights, finances, etc.

My best guesss at resorts: If I were to guess based on the 2012 race resorts, I'd say either Port Orleans - Riverside (POR) or renting points and staying at Saratoga Springs (SSR). I've done so many trips at Values (and loved every one, BTW!) that I think the next few trips will be a tad splurge-y.

My best guess at plans: I'm hoping to have ample park time peppered with lots of DIS Meets with any peeps who have joined on this journey or who end up being in the World at the same time. And while I'm a huge fan of enjoying a leisurely sit-down meal, I'm guessing this trip will be short on the table service and big on the on-the-go service and of the adult beverage persuasion. ::yes::

Training Plans

While I know now that finishing a 5K is not only realistic but perfectly reasonable, I've been focusing on the next goal, which is to improve my pace. My goals are as follows:

September 2011: Finish the Wine and Dine Halloween 5K with 15.5 min./mile pace or in 48 minutes or less.

January 2012: Comfortably complete 3.1 miles at a 15 min./mile pace.

June 2012: Comfortably complete 3.1 miles at a 14 min./mile pace.

January 2013: Comfortably complete 3.1 miles at a 13 min./mile pace.

2013 events: Finish the Royal Family 5K (assuming that's still what it's called) with a 12.5 min. mile pace or in 39 minutes or less.

Along the way I may find the pace at which I find my "runner's peace", the pace at which I really feel
levitation.gif
and if I do, my goals will change, perhaps be endurance-based or something like that. But, as a planner, this really gives me something concrete to work on.

My current training schedule pans out this way:

Sunday and Saturday: These are the days I really work on my pace. I work out at the gym on the treadmill so I can have the most control over my speed and get the best concept of how I feel at that pace. Right now I'm averaging over 2.5 miles at a faster pace and have different workouts I'll follow as my endurance and speed improve. I'm happy to share these details if anyone is interested.

Monday and Friday: These are simply distance walks. I walk for 60 minutes, outside, at approximately a 20 min./mile pace.

Wednesday: I walk for 45 minutes in a very hilly neighborhood. I don't pay any attention to distance. I do it to focus on conditioning myself and waking up the leg and butt muscles I haven't been using on a regular basis. I SWEAT my way through these sessions!

Tuesday and Thursday: Rest days!

I employ various routes to keep it interesting. I also limit my time on the treadmill to only when I HAVE to be there since I'm not a fan and often walk away from it feeling slightly dizzy.

So, now I'm curious (and totally psyched up all over again) - what are YOUR plans and goals? :listen:

Can I Just copy your plans LOL!!

Well besides the training schedule...although I might follow that too LOL!! I'm going to continue with the couch to 5K which I'm working on!!!!

LOL Best guess plans are awesome! I know where I want to stay...but where I will actually stay might be two different things!

From your mouth to God's ears! What a dream job! And thanks.

Shall I add you to the 'potential' list?
It really is a lot of fun. :goodvibes

You never know! Send a manuscript to different publishing houses.

Yes, defnitely! I'd love to try one of the Disney races.

I love your potential plans and your training schedule. I like your training goals too, they seem very reasonable and attainable. I think my problem is that I try to set too high of goals and then I get discouraged and don't accomplish anything.

I keep going back and forth about 2013. I would really like to work out my family trips and the 5k to make it worth my while to buy an AP. I have decided that I about break even with 2 trips but 3 trips really make sense for me to buy an AP.

Here is what I'm thinking...
Jan. 2012 - already planned trip
Oct or Dec 2012 - trip for Food & Wine or for Holiday decorations (Buy AP)
Feb 2013 - solo/girls trip for 5k
Sept or Oct 2013- Food & Wine

The hardest part about planning trips is that I have to take one 2 week vacation per year where I currently work. So I'm taking 4 days off for January and then I have 2 weeks plus a few more vacation days. I don't know if I could wait to take a two week vacation until December. That is a long time to go without a vacation. :scared1:

If I have an AP I would probably stay super cheap value hopefully with an AP discount for the 5k. I'm thinking a 3 night trip at the maximum but my husband has mentioned that we could do a family trip then as well. I don't know how I feel about that but it is an option. It really just depends on how things work out over the next few months. Only time will tell.

As far as training I really haven't started a program. I need to get on that. My town is having a 5k in the middle of September and I really want to do it but I know I'll be walking and I have this irrational fear of coming in last. I don't know. I'm so scared to do it. :headache:

Ok, well I recently started doing a cross fit style work out with a husband/wife team of trainers. They are working my butt off!! :lmao: My goal is to run/walk a 5k on Labor Day, then actually run most of the 5K in the World in January. :thumbsup2We'll see how that falls into place! I'd really like to lose about 50 lbs by then, too. I'm already down 4.4. Not great, but it's a start!

Our town does a 5k & a 1 mile fun run every year on Labor Day. I came in dead last in the FUN RUN 2 years ago!!! Not fun, but not the end of the world. I was pushing a stroller & walking most of the race with our daughter, who has some mobility issues. She cheated & cut across to walk with Daddy the last part of the race!!

Seeing Tink's scheme written out was a lightbulb moment for me: Just seeing several incremental steps, spaced every few months, means there's plenty of time. I can do this gradually!

LL, what would be so bad about finishing last in your very first 5k? Wouldn't it be great just to say you finished? You could think of it as practice. Maybe find a 5k in a nearby town, not your own. Maybe find one in October, so you have more training time, and cooler weather. You really want to do this, and you are woman, therefore: You can do it! :woohoo: Go for it!
PS Heading to Fenway on Friday :yay: I'll be sure to wave to you :wave2:

I'm such a non-planner these days. :lmao:

The only thing that I can tell you for certain is that I want to go. And that most likely, I'd like it to be our girl's weekend for that year. However, if money was tight, I could see my turning this into a family trip for the TK clan as well.

Honestly...is it possible to say I don't know how to plan? :lmao:

I guess I could talk a little bit about my training, if that helps anyone else out.

Inititally I started doing the Couch to 5K because I wanted to learn how to run.

Yes. You read that right. I wanted to learn how to run and how to do it properly. I was really spurred on by reading The Courage to Start. I'd read about the book and a journey to a Disney half marathon in a friend's pre trip report and trip report, and I decided I needed to read it.

Honestly, I didn't think it would change my life, but I can't express to you how much it has.

For those of you who may not know me, I lost my mother a little over a year ago. She was only 55, and it was completely unexpected. I can say now, which I never have said before on the boards, that she had a heart attack. The short of it is that the EMTs were able to bring her back, but she never regained consciousness. My father, sister, grandmother (mom's mom) and I spent about two weeks of absolute pure hell on earth, and one by one we individually realized, myself being the last to come to such a conclusion, that there was no hope.

If we kept her in that state, she never would have known us. She would have need a trach, and a feeding tube, and all sorts of "support" to live. And so we chose.

Which is really ironic, because you don't make the choice. God does. When we went to comfort measures only, my mother waited until she was ready to go. And the morning that I went back to work, about an hour after I was there, I got the phone call from my husband.

I had a lot of one sided conversations with my mother while she was in the hospital, and I read her the whole Wizard of Oz. It was her favorite movie, and I know she loved the book, too.

When you go through something like that, never mind that I was pregnant at the time with my one year old son, it changes you.

Forever.

I've been therapy since, and I'm doing fairly well. My husband and I have had no shortage of life changes since her passing. Our second child was born. Our oldest went to kindergarten. We bought a house. It's really been one thing after another.

Running was something to do. Something constant. Something that I could measure. It was also something that previously, I'd hated.

I have to tell you, since my mother died, there's very little I won't do.

I am alive. I can move my body of my own will. I breathe. I eat. I love. I live.

I am SO lucky.

So I began to run. I followed the Couch to 5K program, and when I started, I couldn't even run a mile in 30 minutes.

Now, about 7-8 months later, I run 3.1 miles in just under 50. I'm training currently to maintain a speed under a 16 minute mile, the minimum requirement for the Disney 5Ks.

Eventually, I'd like to do a half marathon.

I run every other day, and I do the full 3.1 every time. I prefer my training on the treadmill, as I live in a really hilly neighborhood, but every now and then I'll go outside and get that experience as well, so I'm used to it.

I'll continue to run at my 14 / 15 minute mile pace, and eventually, I'll start adding on another 1/4 mile at a time, and trying to increase my distance so I can get closer to my half marathon goal.

I figure if you can run 3, what's 10 more? ;)

Any time I have a doubt in my head, I think of my mother.

That's not true. Sometimes, I imagine I'm chasing Jack Sparrow, and that works pretty well. ;)

But when I have a dark moment. A moment when I have a stitch in my side, and I'm thirsty, and I don't want to go on, I think of my mother.

I think that she is dead. And that I am alive. That my body lives and breathes and moves. And what a blessing that is. I like to think that she's watching me, and that she's proud of me.

A girl who never was a runner.

Who has become one.
