Tiaras, Tutus & Tie-Dye: A 5K Trip Trifecta - UPDATED: 8/2/11!

I'm definitely interested!!!!! Exciting times!! Thanks for all the 5K info Tink!!!!

I have a few questions for you Tink. I'm wondering how long of a trip you would plan for a 5k? I will probably be going down solo so I will want to keep costs down to a minimum, so I'm thinking only a few nights, as long as you can pick up your packet and then for race day, a two or three night trip should be okay, right?

Also, what kind of park ticket are you getting with that discount?

A short trip is fine. As a matter of fact, my trip in Sept./Oct. is only 3 nights: 9/30/11-10/3/11. My Feb./Mar. trip this year was longer because it was the re-do of the trip BF and I were supposed to have in Sept. but couldn't because of his being hired as a FF.

Packet pick-up usually begins on the Friday morning and runs all day long. This past race I flew in Fri. and Maria and I picked up our packets that afternoon. There is very last minute registration at the event itself (though I think they discourage you using it unless you have no other choice).

I'm undecided as to what this trip will be like and for now, I'm ok with that. I'd like to see what others are thinking. BF recently commented, "Well, I don't think I'd really mind going to Disney once a year." ::faint:: (And thanks to whoever it was that slipped him the Kool-Aid.) So, this may be a short, girlie weekend getaway or it may be a longer trip with BF joining in the fun (though not the 5K - that man detests running). We'll see. But certainly not everyone HAS to make a long or short trip of it.

Also, what kind of park ticket are you getting with that discount?

That's a 2-day non-Hopper. Disney price is $168 before tax. Discounted price is about $112, though I can't remember if that's before or after tax.

Marc & I have talked about going in January '13 for my 30th Birthday since Fantasyland should be done by then plus I really love traveling in January so I am not sure if I want to move that to February or figure out how to do a trip in January and then a quickie solo trip in February. Of course 1,001 things could change by then but I like to have some sort of plan and options so I know what I need to do money-wise. I was just worried about flying in on Friday and what would happen if the weather changed or delayed my flights. I don't know. I've got plenty of time to worry and think about it. :rotfl:

That doesn't seem like a bad price for a 2-day non-hopper. Good to know. I think I might work up a tentative budget and see what I would have to put aside each month or week, I seem to save better when I divide out our trips like that.

Well, if it were to be a solo trip after your big trip, if there's a group of us, we could likely all cut room costs by sharing rooms, so there's that. Also, one of the things I've started doing, since the flight can take such a big bite out of the trip budget, is to ask for Southwest Airlines gift cards rather than Disney gift cards. (I actually think I saw them in my Stop & Shop yesterday.) It is most often the cheapest and most convenient airline for me. Even if they're for small amounts, every little bit adds up!

I was just worried about flying in on Friday and what would happen if the weather changed or delayed my flights.

Worst case scenario would be the package pick-up the morning of. I think there may also be a way to have someone else pick up for you, but I didn't look to deeply into how that worked.

I do too. It lessens the sticker shock.

Depending on whether you do a January trip, how long it is, and how long this trip ended up being, you could also consider an Annual Pass. I originally had a Hopper booked for last Sept. I upgraded it to an AP and, let's see, all said and done got 14 days at the parks out of it. At this year's rate that would work out to about $39/day. Not bad.

Yea for making it official!!! :woohoo: Loving these new smilies. Tutu & runner are so cute!

Please add me to the definitely interested list. I'm Suzy. :flower3:

Thanks to TK's & Nikki's encouragement, plus inspiration from LL, I've already started easing toward training. For now, just walking the dog a little faster -- whenever the heat index allows a good walk --and taking extra trips up & down stairs. And this evening, I started Phase One of my "DH, Please Say Yes!!!" campaign. Just a quick mention of 5Ks in general. No special reason. :rolleyes1 He probably thinks I'm about to start trying to talk him into running one!

After reading the latest (inspirational!) installment in your TR, I am totally in for this.

(I’m Anna).

Do you think some of the DIS Dads will want to come along if they hear they get to wear a tutu?

I will be looking to split a room for sure. I was even thinking about renting points, from what I remember when I've looked into the races is that there is usually at least one DVC resort as one of the race resorts. That is a really good idea on the Southwest giftcards. We have a reward program at work and every month we get "points" and you can spend them on giftcards. I am going to look to see if they have Southwest, if not they have American Express Checks so I could just buy those and save onto them. :thumbsup2

I know you can have someone else pick it up, I think they have to have the waiver signed by you and a copy of your ID. Not 100% sure though but with winter travels it may be smart to buddy up with others to make sure our packets get picked up.

I will keep the AP in mind but it is such a huge chunk of cash to have to spare all at once. I still technically have my AP until the middle of September this year and it is burning a whole in my pocket. :rotfl2:

Good for you! Baby steps and slow and steady progress are key!

Slowly slippin' him the Kool-Aid. I like it. :thumbsup2

YAY!

I would LOVE to see some of the DIS Dads join us! I guess the tutus could be optional...though I think they should wear them! There were a BUNCH of men running in tutus with their ladies at this year's event!

I hear you! Mine is good thru 9/19/11 and I'm still debating renewing it. It's all going to depend on next year's Super Secret Trip, which right now is a little tentative due to some unexpected circumstances.

Hi, Anna! :wave2:

Dude. There are some DIS Dads I would love to see in tutus. :lmao:

And to discuss some of the earlier stuff, I'm thinking that for me, this will most likely be a girlie weekend. I'll either go "solo" if I don't share with someone, or come with a friend who is currently not on the DIS...but perhaps we can suck her into the dark side, eh...although time will tell. She's wanted to do a 5K with me, and she's very physically fit, just does not run. I've convinced her she could easily walk it because she's so in shape, so she's putting it on her calendar.

I figured you all wouldn't mind a non-DISer as long as she was willing to go along with all our craziness! ;)

Get that woman on the DIS!
We're all mad here. ;)

I say the more the merrier!! :thumbsup2

I'm thinking of seeing if my mom wants to come with me or my friend from work, we shall see though. I am 99% sure this will be a girly weekend for me. I just want to keep costs to a minimum because I'd really like my longer Disney trip to be in January of 2013. I don't know though.

How were the crowds in the parks this past year, Tink?

I'm currently picturing BF running in a tutu.

::snortlaugh::

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: I think I'd pay money to see that.

The Princess 1/2 Weekend falls at the end of Winter break (at least for schools in the NE). I didn't go to a park on the Friday, so I'm not so sure about that. Saturday - Sunday were busy, but manageable. Monday - Thursday were great. The next weekend was extremely busy, but that may have also been due to the fact that it was ESPN Weekend. Now that they've discontinued that, it may have an effect...or may not, because that next weekend is also the start of some Spring Breaks for some colleges.

Out of 7 days, I probably only felt overwhelmed by the crowds for like, a day and a half, and that was mostly at the end of the trip.

Right? Somehow I doubt he'd see the humor the way we do.

Or.

Maybe he would! He surprises me like that.
If we were to make this our big trip for 2013, I'd totally ask him to do the 5K with us, including wearing of a tutu. He's not a big runner, so I wouldn't hold my breath, but sometimes he surprises me. He'd be a great motivator though!

Indeed :ccat:

Me too. I'm thinking of starting a fund simply to entice him.
And bacon. The promise of lots of bacon.

Would my pasta carbonara help?

I say the more the merrier!! :thumbsup2

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that I would not want this to be my family trip. I prefer to go at a different time of year for that, but for a girls' weekend, if I can afford it, February is awesome. It's a slower time of year for DH at work, so me being gone isn't such an issue with figuring out what to do with the kiddos. That'll be the clincher for me though, how much time DH can take off and such. Worst case scenario I can do a really short weekend. :thumbsup2
