Thyroid Issues

I also have hypothyroidism and have a really hard time loosing weight. About 4 years ago I lost 30 something pounds and 30 something inches in six months by working out at Curves, drinking tons of water and watching what I ate. Then we bought a house and this and that and the other thing and I gained it all back and more.

Now I'm back at Curves, trying to watch what I eat but not doing too well with the water. I really don't like water. Anyway, I've lost about 10 pounds and 12 and a half inches in 5 months or so. It's hard and I get tired and sometimes I just feel like I've hit the wall and can't do it anymore. DH is supportive but just really has no idea of the impact that hypothyroidism can have on your stamina. My meds were recently adjusted up again so we'll see how it goes from here.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone in this. Thanks!

So I decided monday to call my DR and have my thyroid re tested with all the problems I have been having I had a felling my #'s were out of wack and boy were they ever even being a a pretty big dose of synthroid I had a level of 8. the normal level is below 5. ouch so they are going to increase my meds again and I will re do blood work in 6 ro 8 weeks. hoefully this will help in the sceam of things. Thansk again for all the support on this board. You all are great.

I am right with you guys. I have been having problems with hair thinning, weight gain, fatigue, muscle pains since DD #1 was born and then when I had my second child it just got worse and worse.

My GP tested my thyroid and it was pretty normal. BUT....we have a HUGE history of hypothyroid in my family and I knew that was the problem.

I scheduled an appointment with an endocrinologist and was initially seen by his Nurse Practitioner. She was just about to shove me out the door with a pat on the back and a good diet plan when she "remembered" that she hadn't felt my thryoid. Needless to say she felt a huge goiter there and I was then given proper testing and eventually medication.

I started on the 137 mcg and had heart palpitations and was put on 75mcg. It has made some improvement, but apparently I still need higher. My doc just upped me this week. Has anyone else had heart palpitations on higher doses? Does it go away after a few weeks on the dose?

I too am struggling with my weight. I had a double whammy of being on prednisone (steroids) for a year. I already was carrying an extra 30 pounds and I put almost 50 on from the steroids (and in honesty, the ice cream too).

I am going to start to cut out the gluten rich, white carb foods. I have heard good results from that and hope it works for me. I am ready to try anything.

That last post made me wonder what dose everybody is on of synthroid. My doctor just raised me from 50 mcg to 75 mcg, but I don't feel a bit better. Still have the digestive issues and still falling asleep anytime I stop for a rest. I have been getting out of bed better, but that about it.

My Synthroid dosage was recently increased to 274 mcg. I experienced heart palpatations in the past when my dosage was increased too quickly. When my dosage was increased this time I took 1 of my old pills and 1 of my new pills daily until my old pills were gone (about a month, I had refilled them not long before my dosage was changed) and then I started on my new dosage. By stepping up half at a time I did not experience any palpatations and I'm hoping that this dosage will get my numbers back in check.

I'm convinced that the growing thyroid problems are due to synthetic hormones that are given to the cows and chicken that we eat. Buuuttt...I eat it anyways!! :o|

I had had some changes in my nodule and undergone a needle aspiration (biopsy) about a year ago. They said it was not cancer, however they wanted to see my in six months for another ultrasound and more blood work. By the time that appointment came up, I was miserable. I cannot stay awake to watch a movie or read a book. I fall asleep driving. I'm so cold that I wore a hooded sweatshirt 90% of the time we were at WDW two months ago even though it was 90 degrees. Come to find out I had gained 4 more nodules and my levels had finally dropped out of the normal range. Ugh. I also have been gaining poundage for a steady year now. I was on WW, The Mediteranean Diet, South Beach...etc. I've tried it all and nothing works. I even bought a book called The Thyroid Diet. Don't waste your money. It follows any other basic dieting guideline, nothing that people with hypothyroid disorders don't know. We are probably the expert on diets...lol. Anyhow...I think I'm going to go to a new doc. I'm meeting with my GP on Thurs to talk to her. I wish you luck. I know how hard it is!!! If I find something that works I'll let ya know!

You sound alot like me. My problem didn't start until after my second child was born. I have a thyroid nodule and a complete idiot for a Dr. who just was not proactive enough with all my side effects very early on. Right now it seems to be under control although I just had my nodule scanned and they said there is no change. But I feel like I have something lodged in my throat. It is very uncomfortable sometimes. My DR. is trying to tell it's anxiety and not my thyroid :headache:. I don't think so! I have been under stress for years so for me unfortunately it's normal.
At one point I was freezing all the time and so tired I could not even stay awake after dinner if I made it that long. ALso my hair was falling out like crazy and my nails became very brittle. It's a good thing my hair was way too thick or I'd be bald. I gained 10lbs. and was not overeating:confused3 . Now I have finally lost that weight but have been to killing myself to do it. Eating about 900-100 calories a day and working out for and hour 5-6 times a week. I'm also switching Dr. because I can't live with this thyroid nodule bugging me and am ready to have my thyroid removed. I don't feel like it's under control enough and I don't really like the meds he has me on. I'm on Levothyroxine and it makes me very nauseous for some reason.

I was just upped from 100 to 112. We will see if this makes a difference in the symptomes. I have taken 3 doses and so far no heart palps. Good deal lets hope it continues this way. And here is hoping it helps with the weight thing too. I would love to be down 10 pounds by oct 25 that is 12 weeks if I really work hard I think I can do It. NO I know I can do it. Yeah.

I am at 175, and have been at 200. I am having a few more break thru symptoms, but Sept is my testing month. I agree with others, that sometimes I feel as if I can't swallow, and that something is stuck. My GP says I am ready to see an endo, but waiting.

Good luck to all

Wendy
