My 10 day old DS has a white tongue and we just found white spots on the inside of his upper lip. At first we thought it was just milk reside, then we found the spots on his lip and the spots on his tongue don't wipe off. Does anyone have experience with thrush? It isn't affecting his eating at all and he isn't any more cranky than normal. We are going to call the doctor on Monday, but just wondered what others experiences have been. Also, I'm nursing him exclusively and want to make sure he doesn't pass it along to me. Thoughts?

Thank you!

Since you are nursing you will need to go to the dr and both get treated. I bottle fed all my children and a few of them had thrush. It is painful, and while you may not have any trouble feeding your baby now, you will soon. They will give you a med (or did when my kids were little) that almost numbs the mouth/pain reliever. I think they also got an antibiotic but I don't recall, since I am not sure you can get results on yeast infection. Which is what it is.

Good luck. Sooner the better, once it starts growing, it grows quickly!

Both my son and I had it when he has 2 months old. I didn't notice it until he had passed it on to me and every time he latched on it was like pins and needles - OUCH!

The dr. prescribed us both meds over the phone. Some sort of liquid for him and Nystatin cream for me.

Good luck!

Sorry if this is the first post to you. Use sage for infant thrush. Worked for my DS. Under the tongue.

Way back in the olden days (22 years ago) they gave my daughter a medication called "Gentian Violet" (unsure about the spelling) but it made her look like she'd been eating blueberry pie...

Nystatin is an anti-fungal and there is a liquid preparation called "Swish and swallow". Don't wait to get treated because it will be painful for both of you.

call your doc and get him and yourself treated before it affects breastfeeding. this is a good reason to call on a weekend and its a simple enough fix.

Definitely oral thrush (yeast infection). Don't wait till Monday. Get it treated! As others have said there is a simple fix.

pakaramom - Thanks for sharing your experience. Pins and needles is exactly what it feels like when he latches on.

Thanks for your responses! No more waiting for Monday, I've already called the after hours number and will hopefully hear something soon. Never had this problem with my other 3 so this is all new!

Used it back in 2004 and worked BRILLIANTLY. DS was stained purple for a week or so, and so was I, but it really helped.

I actually just put it on where he would be latching on, and that way it got exactly where it needed to be on him. I think I painted it on once a day for maybe a week?

It's not really a medication, it's a dye. Kinda weird, but it worked SO well. Oh, and it is CHEAP, too. Not always easy to find (DH had to go to a compounding pharmacy to get it), but totally worth it.

A lifesaver! I struggled with thrush constantly with My last DS. Finally a friend who had thrush with her two children sent me all the things that worked for her.
It allowed me keep nursing.

First Gentian Violet in all it's purpleness. Sounds weird but works. Then acidophilus caps. I took them as it said on the bottle and for DS I would dip my finger in the powder and put it in his mouth. I also took grapefruit seed caplets. Make sure and boil pacifiers an wash nursing bras (and nursing pads of you use reusable) in hot water. Limit dairy and sugar as they feed yeast.

Good luck. It took awhile to get rid of the spots but The pain went away quickly. Once we get rid of the thrush I kept taking the acidophilus and we never got it again.

I remember my daughter having it and the meds looked like orange juice. Also I actually called back once I was home with the medicine. It seemed like a lot to give at one time. So don't be alarmed if it seems like a lot. I believe it was a whole teaspoon which is a lot for a few days old baby.

I also used Genitan Violet and it worked like a charm....

Yep it works great!! :thumbsup2

Another vote for Genetian violet. As said, you may need to get at an old-time sort of independent pharmacy vs. Walgreens. It's in a little bottle that looks like iodine but very pretty purple. Works great.

It is also required to take pics of baby with the "blueberry pie" mouth to laugh at later. :thumbsup2

I used grape seed oil extract, which I diluted in water and swabbed in my sons mouth and on myself.

Thanks everyone! It's times like this I wish I didn't live an hour away from any real kind of shopping so I could find the items suggested! At least there is a pharmacy close and a prescription was called in so here's hoping this clears quickly. Glad I didn't wait until Monday. Thanks again!!!
