Throwaway room (read post #2041 or #2710 before posting)

Our main reason for booking a throwaway value is for the EMH. We just love EMH. The 60 day FPs were a nice addition but under your plan we'd still book an onsite throwaway.

In any case- I have heard? Maybe read somewhere? That their general occupancy year round is around 89%.....so that means they still have rooms to fill. At 89% the throwaway rooms are probably more of a non-issue than many DISers think it is.
With the average annual US hotel occupancy rate at (sometimes well) under 64% http://www.statista.com/statistics/200161/us-annual-accomodation-and-lodging-occupancy-rate/ an 89% average is stunning. And while I didn't bother to search WDW, you can bet the campgrounds are over even that.

I seriously doubt that. I've tent camped in the most popular seasons at WDW, and during the week, campsites have always been about half-full, with the exception of Halloween, which is always packed. That's in the most popular seasons. During the summer, tent sites definitely don't fill up, as it is way too hot to tent camp for most people.

Again, December is a very popular season at the campgrounds, and yet every weekday is currently available (and December is only 2 months away) INCLUDING Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 89% seems awfully high for the campgrounds.

FYI, I just got a weekend night at the fort for Nov. 29. 60 day window from today!

So take that as you will. It's not the weekend night I wanted (wanted something on the other end of our trip) but it works.

NOt sure if I will keep it. I'm going to book it and keep trying for another weekend night in Dec. that works better for us. So as of right now I have a 6 nights starting Nov. 29 and 5 nights starting 12/7 that I have booked. I'll keep them both and keep checking for days before and after the 12/7 trip because I would prefer that one. In a week, I'll make my 60 day bookings for the 12/7 trip (won't have tickets until then anyway) and hope that at that time, someone with a throwaway will cancel the day they get their passes. I don't care if I don't get good FP+ for every day of the trip. We practically lived at WDW last year, so we'll make this one easy going.

Probably that was someone booking a throwaway room who threw it away after getting their FP+ spots this morning. And that's okay. As long as I get a full week at the campgrounds, I'll be happy!

Jealous! Have fun.

If you do a throwaway room does it have to be at the beginning of your stay? Could it be in the middle? Does that matter? Thanks :)

Given this is a thread about the throwaway room concept, there is no way to tell a booked site versus an unhooked one without actually trying to book a site.
By all accounts--there are a few times a year when the campground is booked solid and Christmas week is one of those times. Hence the frustration when it is found out that many of the sites are unoccupied.

Regardless, being able to see that booking a site is possible during hat time still in no way tells you what percentage is currently reserved.

No, but anecdotally, it demonstrates that throwaway practices right now have not reached a level that site availability patterns have changed at all from previous years before throwaway rooms were a practice. It indicates that all of the arm-waving and panic about unavailability of rooms is quite possibly unnecessary at this point.

I'm going to keep checking out Christmas week, just for kicks. Also, the thing to remember is that there are 784 campsites total, 90 of them tent sites. Earlier it was mentioned that there are 1200. That is incorrect, as that includes about 400 cabins, which I am sure aren't being used for throwaway rooms.

Those of you vehemently opposed to throwaway campsite practices, would you be willing to take a guess as to how many throwaway sites are booked per month? (Any given month.)

This. If you paid for it that's all that matters.

Yup. And I say this as a person who has zero plans to use throwaway rooms because I will never stay offisite, and also as a person trying to snag a weekend in December in a tent site (for actual tent camping.)

No one is stealing anything. If I want to get a campsite for 10 days and I do, but I get a room at Grand Floridian for the night of the Christmas party, just for fun and because it is our anniversary, am I cheating the other people who would like to have a GF room because I have a campsite and a GF room? No. And am I cheating people who want a campsite for that night? No. I've paid for what I want. Disney will give it. End of story. If Disney thinks it is an issue, then they will fix it, but only if they can do so without taking away from the (majority) regular Campground guests, and without treating guests as potential criminals.

I won't be using one either. We usually always try to stay on site, so no need. But if you want to book one, I say knock yourself out.

It doesn't have to be, but all the perks will be based on check-in date. So if it is at the end of your stay, you won't be able to book FP+ for the beginning of your stay until 30 days prior, etc. so you lose some of the benefits.

Oh, the irony! The day I snag a weekend campsite is the same day my husband finds out he has a project in December. We are going to have to save it for another time. (Good thing I have October and December 2015 campsites booked already just in case.) Our consolation is that we're going to make our May trip a really big one. The minute I can book Mother's Day Tea at the Grand Floridian, I'm on it!

Good luck to everyone, both those who won't get throwaway rooms and those who will. :) Hopefully there is enough magic and pixie dust to go around.

Sigh. Time to go change my signature!

I am sure this has been discussed many times but it got me wondering. We are arriving the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I didn't think I would have any problems getting FP+ for the following week after Thanksgiving but started to get worried about the weekend. I know many would be spending the entire week of Thanksgiving and would have booked at the 60 day mark. So I booked several days at the cheapest price I could find and then linked it with my DVC reservation. When the window opened up I was able to book Anna/Elsa and 7DMT on any day/time we wanted. I called today and cancelled the other reservation. So what is stopping someone from booking like an extra 2 weeks or even a month and then canceling? Is everyone already doing this and I just now caught on?

You can only book FP+ for the days you have tickets, so you can't book dummy days unless you have tickets.

You know, I was wondering this exact same thing just the other day. We have a short trip planned for late January and I was ruing the fact that those with 10+ day trips were going to nab all my FP+s.

Personally I feel it would be too much of a hassle, but I imagine some people are already doing it.

...yea these are called "throwaway rooms". There's a big long thread debating this.

Not really. Most of those in that thread that have booked a throwaway room only booked for 1 night and paid for the room or campsite. What the OP is talking about is booking a room for time before your scheduled trip to be able to make FP+ earlier. For what the OP is talking about, you would have to book more than just 1 night to make much of a difference in your FP+ booking. Most of those booking throwaway rooms aren't staying on-site either and that is the reason for the 1 night throwaway room. The OP is already staying on-site and is just adding days to before their trip to access the FP+ system for their real travel dates earlier.

I did the exact same thing for the exact same week. We come in that Saturday after Thanksgiving and really wanted to ride SDMT. We are AP holders so we had the tickets. Worked like a charm and was so much less stressful.

No, it does not appear to have changed, other than when you reach your check-out date, the window immediately drops to 30 days. Early on I believe the reports showed that the window remained fix to the 60th day after checkout, until you reached 30 days again.

Ive booked a night at Disney and the system has let me book fp for the remainder of my holiday one day at a time from 60 days not 30 days.

ive now read these will be cancelled when I check out but want to know if this has happend to anyone?

thanks

As it stands right now, you get two days of perks for those things tied to your resort stay...EMH, parking, and the +X on FP+ and ADR reservations (ADRs used to be +10 no matter what...it's now +X, or the length of your stay).

One difference is that once you get the 60 day window for FP+, that window STAYS at 60 days, until the day you check out. So while you get a +X from your check-in date, you still get 60 days from the day in question for days after your resort stay.

Also as it stands right now, if you cancel your reservation you do NOT lose any FP+ or ADRs made. But in the case of FP+ you cannot make changes or additional FP+ until you are in the 30 day window.

I'm so confused
I booked a throwaway campsite for one night, thinking that I would be able to book 60 days ahead of time for our check in and check out days then I thought I would have a rolling 60 days after the check out day.
Is that wrong??
Will I only have 60 days from our check in and check out dates then will it drop to 30 days after my check out date?
My head is spinning :furious:
Can someone PLEASE explain this again. Will it remain a rolling 60 days after the check out date or will it drop to 30 days after the check out date?

Thank you to anyone who can explain/help :flower3:

Karen :)

Are you sure your FP+ will still be there after you cancel the room reservation, when that time frame is in real time?
