Throwaway room (read post #2041 or #2710 before posting)

The funny thing is ....

If Disney would just let us pay for the perks, without the ruse of "booking a room", it would be a win-win for Disney.

They could, say, charge $50-$75 for MB/parking/FP at 60 days package, with no room privileges. This would leave campsites and value rooms out of the equation.

It would probably also encourage off-siters to spend more time in the parks.

Any negatives to this idea?

For Disney? Most likely, less onsite occupancy. They want those rooms filled. If you can purchase the perks, why stay onsite?

_IF_ throwaway rooms are making it difficult for legit guests from getting rooms, then offering a "perk package" at a similar (more likely _slightly_ reduced) per-day cost would be a win for Disney...as the rooms will be occupied anyways (and perhaps more consistently)

_IF_ throwaway rooms are not really complicating things, then there is no incentive.

I.haven't heard reports that their resorts are at 100% occupancy

Because from what I read on here there are a ton of people who love the "disney bubble" and wouldn't even go to WDW if they weren't in it. I don't think that offering that option would make people not want to stay onsite. FP was never an onsite advantage before and it had no change on occupancy. They still have EMH, dining plan, DME and just the atmosphere of being in WDW. For those who have found that as a must have in the past, they will find it as a must have without FP+ booking.

The reason they won't do that is b/c the reality is the system is not really a great one and then people will be frustrated b/c even more people at 60 days will see they cannot secure the rides they want when they want them causing people to want to be at the park less. I think at 30 days people are less likely to change their plans.

$50-75 isn't enough to encourage people to stay onsite. Disney doesn't want to encourage people who stay offsite to spend more time in the parks. They want people to spend more days (and money) at their resorts, with less time per day in the parks.

Our main reason for booking a throwaway value is for the EMH. We just love EMH. The 60 day FPs were a nice addition but under your plan we'd still book an onsite throwaway.

In any case- I have heard? Maybe read somewhere? That their general occupancy year round is around 89%.....so that means they still have rooms to fill. At 89% the throwaway rooms are probably more of a non-issue than many DISers think it is.

Disney does not have the same occupancy year round. 89% may be an average year round - which means that at times it will be higher, and at times it will be lower.

Not for us. We never used EMH even when we stayed onsite.

The only reason I booked a throwaway was crippling fear about what FPs we'd be able to book if I didn't book the one night. I booked back when offsiters were only able to book same day fastpasses. Had 30 day FPs been available at the time, I probably would not have booked the one day throwaway room.

The parking and MBs were gravy for me. EMH wasn't even a consideration.

BTW - I re-read some of the above, and I'm afraid I sound like a crazy person. Even as I was trying to book SDMT and getting nowhere, I thought, "This is lunacy." We have always been rope droppers, and only used the old FP system minimally. I knew I was getting myself worked up over nothing. Regardless, this will be our first trip with FP+ in play, and our first trip during Thanksgiving week, and I was nervous. Hence, the throwaway room booking. I suspect that now that offsiters can book 30 days out, and as people get more comfortable with FP+ and less afraid that it's mucking up the system, throwaways will become less common.

I'm okay with booking a throwaway room.

I'm fine with paying for the room.

Do I have to actually check in to the room to get the Magic Bands and not have the FP cancelled?

Do you get to pick your Magic Bands? Are all members of your party given one? If we just get a room for one night but have four day tickets, will that mess up the Magic Bands?

If I book a 1 night stay, how many days can I park onsite? Is parking strictly enforced? (Will someone notice if my parking sticker is expired?) Just curious.
On another note, a friend of mine just bought a camper and is talking about going to WDW. How far in advance will they need to book to avoid the disrupted weeks? I told her about the campsite; she wasn't aware of them.

1). Yes you do

2). Yes they are

3). No it will not

I'm assuming you mean how many days you can park for free at the park if you get a throwaway campsite? The answer is 2, the day you "check in" and the day you "check out".

Someone can correct me on this, but we never had a sticker when we went at the beginning of August. We either had to scan our magic band (the check-in and check-out days of our campsite) or pay for parking every other day.

There was ONE exception. The morning we had a YES class at 7:30am, the parking attendant just waved us through. It didn't seem like they were stopping anyone. I don't know why they were doing that, maybe because it was so early? Still, we took a break that afternoon, so when we came back, we had to pay for parking then. Otherwise, if you leave and come back you just show them your receipt.

Not sure anyone can give you a solid window here, but they should probably book it as soon as they know which dates they'll be there. Three weeks ago we booked 8 days at a full hook-up campsite for the first week of August, no problems.

Well I didn't understand this till I was in line at a ride at WDW when a lady told us she was staying off property at another time share but bought at camp site. They put a tent up and checked in so they could get the perks of staying on property. I still don't really understand it but don't see how there is anything wrong with it. Disney is still getting money it isn't like people are sneaking into the parks. With that said I wouldn't do it but that is just me. Not gonna judge others who do.

Unless you are the person who is trying to add a day to their already existing reservation at Ft. Wilderness and nothing is available.

You do realize they paid for it, right? It's their campsite, not yours.

Exactly. It's annoying, but not cheating. It's completely fair. I say this as a camper trying to get a weekend night or two attached to my December trip (which I booked way late in the game for a long trip December anyway.)

FYI, I just got a weekend night at the fort for Nov. 29. 60 day window from today!

So take that as you will. It's not the weekend night I wanted (wanted something on the other end of our trip) but it works.

NOt sure if I will keep it. I'm going to book it and keep trying for another weekend night in Dec. that works better for us. So as of right now I have a 6 nights starting Nov. 29 and 5 nights starting 12/7 that I have booked. I'll keep them both and keep checking for days before and after the 12/7 trip because I would prefer that one. In a week, I'll make my 60 day bookings for the 12/7 trip (won't have tickets until then anyway) and hope that at that time, someone with a throwaway will cancel the day they get their passes. I don't care if I don't get good FP+ for every day of the trip. We practically lived at WDW last year, so we'll make this one easy going.

Probably that was someone booking a throwaway room who threw it away after getting their FP+ spots this morning. And that's okay. As long as I get a full week at the campgrounds, I'll be happy!
