Thrifty and free additional spouse driver?????

I'm making my final car rental decisions and cancelling the extra ones that I won't need and it is coming down to Alamo for a minivan (9 days) $246.91 or Thrifty for $209.61. I used a code for Alamo to get an additional driver free but Thrifty says on the terms & conditions that there "may" be a charge for additional drivers. I had read here over and over again that spouses are free but when I called their #800 they said "no it is $5 a day". I really don't want to use Thrifty's Blue Chip service since they will have my credit card # just in case we go with Alamo and they feel the need to charge us a cancellation fee of some sort. So anyone have any recent experience with this???? Please??? Thanks

What you read on these boards is not the definitive response. If Thrifty told you $5 a day, I would assume they are right and you will be charged. (I mean what are you going to say if they charge you, 'posters on the DIS said it was free'? Don't think that is going to work.)

Oh, I know that wouldn't work, but the guy sounded like an idiot and had to "check" and I wondered if he was just giving me the quick and safe answer instead of really looking. Just wondering what other people have had happen lately tis all

<EDIT> Just wanted to edit this to let anyone else wondering know... just got off the phone with the counter staff (after going round and round with the automated phone line) and there is NO fee for the spouse so I guess that we will go and see and if they try to charge us, we will just go to Alamo.
