Thrift Stores, Goodwill and Salvation Army

I go to the thrift stores around here. The only problem I have is lately they have been pricing things as if they are antique stores. I once saw at Savers a basket with the Christmas Tree Shop price tag still on it. CTS tag was priced 2.99, Savers put one of their tags on it selling it for 4.99.
The Goodwill closed years ago, I used to get great deals there.

my dh makes a six figure salary, we live in an $800k home and neither of us thinks we're 'too good' to buy at thrift stores. I think you have to use common sense and if i can buy him a pair of Levi's for $2 that are exactly like the ones at Macy's for $50, then I know which way I go.

We also grow a garden for fresh produce and can and freeze what we grow. We believe in being good stewards over what we are given and think more important than how much you make is how well you use it.

This exactly - minus the canning and freezing.

Last week at Salvation Army I found some great bargains. When I got to the register, I learned that their colored tags were on the half price list. Even better! I got:

Rothschild wool dress coat for DD - $8.50
Gymboree jeans for DD - $2
Gymboree corduroys for DS - $2
Old Navy jeans for DS - $1.50

Thrift stores are for SMART shoppers, not the poor. I go to thrift shops and I'm an executive. I save money on clothing so we can put the money in places that it can grow. Buying new only benefits the retailer.

100% agree. I got a $100 Jones NY sweater for $12 two weeks ago. Still had the tags on it.

My son has been wearing thrift store/yard sale clothes for years. He loves to go thrifting!

He knows that just about anything at a yard sale/thrift store is within budget.

He has gotten $80+ jackets, football jerseys, Nike shirts for $5 or less! I would never pay $45 for a Nike shirt, but will happily pay $5.

He tells his friends that he was shopping at thrift stores long before Macklemore said it was cool.

This one was my fault Was doing some searches and got interested in the conversation and replied. Forgot about checking the date until it was too late.

Guess lots of others also found the conversation interesting and jumped in. Not to ruffle feathers...but I have never really understood why ppl get so hot and bothered when old threads are resurrected. If the conversation is still relevant, who cares? On the one hand we are told over and over again to not ask the same questions, but use the search. On the other hand, if you use it you could easily find yourself joining a conversation years old, breaking forum etiquette.

Tripadvisor's forums solved the problem by automatically closing conversations more than a yr old. I really find it jarring though and it feels very unfriendly when I see it.

I guess I just don't see the big deal with old threads. So much of the conversation is the same anyway.

Don't forget to check with your local hospitals. Operating thrift stores are common for hospital Auxiliaries. Likely they are renting retail space and not at the medical facility, but a quick call to the volunteer office should let you know where they are.

Gosh here we go again another thread that is 2 years old that was resurrected. This is the 3rd one this week.

Why does the age of the thread really matter? I could see the complaints if it was by a completely new member just trying to spam or a troll trying to stir the pot but this post has new relevant conversation being added. Honestly, did it really make a difference in your life that this thread was bumped instead of a new one being started on the same subject?

Why comment just to grumble about the original start date? Don't worry, be happy!

I love thrift stores!

We are really into up cycling. I felt from wool sweaters and my DD who is 12 makes up cycles tee shirt scarves and sells them. We like that we are taking something and making it into something else.

Then after checking them out looking for the items we needed I started noticing the prices and the labels and the quality of the items.

I am wearing a gorgeous Talborts sweater that I got for 4.00! I once found an Armani jacket for 2.99 and it was MY SIZE !!!!! That thing fits me perfectly and it is soooo well made.

My DD loves going, everything in there is in her price range!

Went to one of my faves today. Picked up a nice Tommy Hilfiger sweater for DD for $5, a pair of shorts from Delia's for $1.50 & a pair of Danskos for me for $13. Normally I wouldn't spend that much on a pair of thrift store shoes but I was needing some new black shoes for work & I know that Dansko is a good brand.

My local goodwill does this all the time. but I get great deals at the local independent stores I almost never buy new sometimes I even find things with tags that are actually still for sale in Kohls.

The only time I get "grumpy" about an old thread is if it has prices or coupon codes in it then I'm not actually grumpy it's more like "huh" when it doesn't work then I realize it's 3 years old
