Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Good Sunday Morning!

#1 - My Utility Bill Goes Down - It’s nice to have some days with no AC or Furnace running to help get the utility bill a little lower for a few months.

#2 - The Drive To Where My DD21 lives - I love driving to see her in the fall because the trees look so pretty as they are changing.

#3 - Pumpkins & Mums - I love seeing them everywhere.

Fall is my favorite season, with cooler/brisk temps and the gorgeous, ever-changing color of the fall leaves (even though it is the intro to the evils of winter (looking at ice, snow, wind chills in the single digits...).

DD's birthday is 9/23. She is the joy of my life and continues to bring light, laughter, and love to me every single day!

Sweater-weather. It gets chilly here in the fall, and I can break out my sweaters and cardigans to snuggle into daily.

Fall food. Bring on the casseroles, soups, and stews!

@slo I had to laugh; the big drawback to fall in our neck of the woods is the increase in utility bills as lights are turned on sooner in the evening and we fire up the furnace to keep the house warm! Best thing we did was convert from oil heat to gas heat a few years ago; my winter heating bills have been reduced by at least half!

We don’t really get fall here. So, it’s more of a frame of mind.

Halloween- This isn’t going to be an over the top decoration year and I might have to make a mad dash to Oklahoma on Halloween, but I love the build up to the big night for the kids and setting up in the driveway with my Halloween playlist and a big bowl of candy.

The start of the Peanuts trio- The first official day of fall is when I allow myself to start viewing the first of the “Big 3.”

Turkey sales- early November is when the turkeys start going on sale. I lost my stock during the Beryl power outage, so I’m really ready for some birds.

I think I actually felt fall for a moment while I was getting gasoline today. I was standing in the shade and a breeze blew by and it wasn’t like opening an oven door. We are still in the low 90s here, but that breeze felt nice.

I am grateful that I get to see family more in the fall. I see family more between October and the end of the year than I do the rest of the months combined, plus it’s all for holidays which make the visits extra special.

I’m grateful when hurricane season ends in November and the summer storms wind down in October. Sunny 70s for me please!

I’m grateful that the days are shorter. I have trouble sleeping when the sun is up, so I always feel a bit sleep deprived in the summer.

Fall
Watched my first pre-season hockey game today as well as late season baseball! My baseball team is in the playoffs, so I am looking forward to October baseball and to hockey season beginning! (Luckily, I am not a football fan or there would be way more conflicts on what to watch)

The humidity is beginning to lessen and the nights are getting a little cooler. Looking forward to November weather in WDW! Sometimes in November it is cold here and, as we drive to FL, we get a wonderful return to comfortable temps and summer clothing!

I love Halloween! I have my pumpkin scented soaps from Bath & Body Works already on my sinks. I also get to listen to my DGD change her mind every time I see her about what she wants to be for Halloween. :)

Good Monday morning

#1 - Hungarian Cookies My Grandma Made - Sadly, the recipe went with her when she passed away. Even if I had the recipe, I probably wouldn’t make them as good as she did.

#2 - My Birthday Cake My Mom Makes - It’s nothing special, just marble box cake mix with chocolate icing. What makes it special is that my mom takes the time to make it and she puts my Snow White figures on it every year - these are probably 45 years old now.

#3 - Christmas Cookies - Sadly, this may be the first year I don’t get to bake with DD21. Her and I love baking Christmas Cookies together. With her living 2 1/2 hours away and a busy work schedule, she probably won’t be home until right before Christmas.

1. Cakes - My mom and I both have long histories of making cakes. It's served as a way to ensure our loved ones have something really special while avoiding bakery prices (which really are justified with the time, effort and ingredients required on some of these elaborate creations) and in my case, keeping DD18 safe with her food allergies. We aren't pros and have had our share of cake wrecks. In fact, it's that stress of potential wrecks that kept me from doing much with my cake business. Crying over cake at 4am taught me that there's a lot more joy in baking when it's for my loved ones. So, even grateful for the failures!

2. School Pottery projects - I'm not sure how many other people's schools did this, but from early on in elementary through 7th grade, we always did at least one pottery unit per year. There was always a theme and as we got older, there were also more techniques involved. At the end of the project, after all sculpting, assembly, painting and preliminary glazing was done, our respective art teachers would have the projects sent someplace so they could get baked in the kiln. Everyone was always so excited to see their creations after the baking process. My parents still have some of my pieces to this day.

3. Anything in a casserole dish - Obviously, not all casseroles are created equally, but it's nice when someone brings you one and says, just put it in the oven and bake on 375. It's also nice when you've put one together, maybe with holiday leftovers, and put in the deep freeze for an evening when you want a meal but are short on prep time.

Honorable mention to home baked COOKIES - While I like them year round, there's just something I love about having plates and plates of homemade cookies sitting around at the holidays. It's downright awful for the diet, but it's also SOOOOO GOOOD!

Baked🧁🍞🥖🍲

I had a flatbread for lunch today. Grateful for that! 😋

Potatoes! There are just so many ways to prepare and, then, bake them in the oven.

Brownies.

Special appreciative mention for my air fryer, which has been relieving the oven of various baking duties!!!

Homemade bread!

Fimo things the resident 8yo makes for me. Fimo is sculpting/modeling clay that is baked in the oven to harden it. The little guy is always making me little animals, beads, and interesting things (like a bowl of ramen... strange boy!).

Casseroles- especially if it happens to be macaroni and cheese! (hmmm... is lasagna a casserole?)
