Three Things...Gratitude Thread

There have been wars I was against in my lifetime, but I always considered it important to honor those who served.
I agree. This idea gets lost sometimes, because people forget that the soldiers aren’t the ones making the decisions to deploy or not deploy, but they are the ones who put their lives on the line. It also makes it that much more poignant when some of them don’t come home. It’s okay to disagree with whether a country should go to war, but it’s also important to hold the appropriate people responsible for those decisions. Sadly, there have been times when the returning soldiers carried the weight from decisions they had no part in.

We have had many, many members of my extended family, both male and female, young and not so young, serve during times of war and times of peace. Thankfully, although there were a few injuries, no one in my family or close friends paid the ultimate price. I still have family members serving on active duty around the world. I am grateful to them, and their comrades, for being willing to do so. It is something I would not be brave enough to do.

If I were to speak of one family veteran more than others, it would be my maternal uncle. He lied about his age to go to Europe and fight in WWII, and stayed in the military through Korea. He later reinlisted and went to fight in Vietnam when he was older so his son would not have to go. Technically, he did not lose his life in combat, but the chemicals he was exposed to during his last tour were what ultimately took his life a couple of decades later. He is the one I think about on a day like today.

I’m a little behind…

Summertime gratitude: This is a tough one since we’re all reconditioning ourselves for summer ball. We also don’t really get any true breaks. So I guess I’ll pick childhood stuff-
- Nights at the boardwalk with friends
- Mooring our boat with friends to go swimming, fishing, crabbing, picnicking on the water, watching fireworks from the boats, and laying on the decks at night and watching the stars
- Friends’ pools- It wasn’t until my college years that we hot our first home with a pool. It was an amazing pool, but not nearly as fun as hanging out at friends’ pools all summer long…well, for the days when we were home.

Memorial Day- I posted in Flo’s poll about my uncle who was eventually confirmed killed in action in WWII, but I have other relatives that served…including both of my grandfathers. My maternal grandfather had a higher rank, spending much of his time stationed in France and teaching hand to hand combat skills. My paternal grandfather saw a lot of battle, which impacted the rest of his life. I believe he started in Northern Africa, landed in Normandy D+3 or D+4, and was in some of the really intense battles in Belgium. He made it home, but it took a serious mental toll.

Thankful to all who have served and paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Good Tuesday Morning

#1 - Church - My church specifically. We’ve been there for just 3 years, but I feel like we’ve been there for a lifetime. I love it there.

#2 - Chicago - The crime is out of control, the parking is to expensive, but despite those things it’s a great city and I’m glad we live so close. I’ve been going there my whole adult life (my parents didn’t take me as a kid - they never liked the city) and every time I go, I still see something new. My DH and I made sure our girls went to the city often, and we would take them all the time. We still take DD20 when she’s home, and now we get to take her BF too, who isn’t from around here. Hopefully this Autumn they can come here (he’s playing pro minor league baseball this summer) to take him on one of the architectural tours on the Chicago River. While DD20 is here now, we’ll definitely do something in the city this summer.

#3 - Chicken - I love chicken and I serve it for dinner more often than beef. I’m especially grateful when I have some in my freezer and don’t have to go buy it. I normally have a lot in the freezer. I buy it when it’s one sale, wrap each breast, weigh it and write the weight on the wrapping - i always know exactly what I have. Yesterday I tried Aldi chicken breast for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised - this may be new go to chicken breasts.

Cotton is a great answer dear WDWEPCOT and so is Chicago dear Slo. Chicago is where my family was born. I am the NY baby. Champ was born out here. Cotton, the softer the clothing material the better.

Extra C's: Chair I am sitting and couches, cars, too. Clouds and Color and the blessing of having clear vision and while driving with glasses, to see them. Campbell's Chicken Broth and Cards. Comtainers and carts (shopping) are sure handy, too.

My grandfather served in WWI, my father in WWII, my uncle also in WWII. DH's uncle was in Korea and Viet Nam, and my BIL was also in Viet Nam.

Red- raspberries
White- clouds
Blue- My 1989 Hyundai Excel, the first brand new car that I ever bought. Clearly, we are not driving her anymore!

Edited to add today's topic, things beginning with "C:"

Copiers- Is anyone else old enough to remember mimeograph machines? You had to hand write or type them, couldn't "erase" a mistake, and man, was it a workout to have to crank that handle, repeatedly, to make copies. I love having my own copier on my desk, so I can photocopy, print, and scan. We have two here at home and I have one in my office at work.

Christmas lights- I love my multicolored christmas lights and leave them up all year, replacing them when they burn out. I love the colorful glow, welcoming me home whether I'm walking through snowdrifts or contemplating a summer evening out on the deck, under the stars and the colorful lights. Actually- I love all christmas lights, and load my tree with them, and have twinkle lights in several rooms in the house. I could easily skip the ornaments on the tree and just go with the lights!

Carrots, carrots, cantaloupe, and cauliflower... and more than likely any other "C" vegetable or fruit that I haven't listed!

C things...

My dad- His name starts with C.

DD17- While she goes by her middle name, her legal first name begins with C. Her name is a tribute to three of my four grandparents. Two of those three started with C...one of which is the male equivalent of her name. One shares the same C name with my dad. The third was not a C name, but the letters of her name are all in DD17s name.

Colorado- The mountains are my happy place. While I haven't been to every mountainous state in the US, of the ones I have, Colorado makes me the happiest. Mental snapshots of RMNP have been my peaceful image during medical procedures.

I also didn't do Red, White and Blue, but I think I'm going to do vehicles...

Red- My current vehicle. Technically, she's burgundy, but she falls in the red family and it's the reddest option they offered. While I need to get her in for damage repairs as soon as we get DH into something new due to his totaled truck, my vehicle has been the workhorse of late... to which I'm grateful.

White- While my first car was also white and we've had some other white vehicles that were memorable, the white vehicle that came to the rescue was my 2012 Nissan Pathfinder. It was just before 7am, we were on our way to the airport after surprising the girls with a trip to WDW, when we were stopped at a red light and rear ended by a vehicle est. to be going over 75 mph. While we had some bumps and bruises and needed some care for whiplash, we all walked away.

Blue- While there is a part of me that would really love a yellow or orange vehicle, blue is my favorite color of the more "normal" car colors. My second, third, fourth and eighth vehicles were blue. I also had one black vehicle where the metallic fleck paint pulled shades of blue from some angles. I tend to have bad luck with vehicles, so at least I can love them a little more when they're a pretty color.

leebee: I do remember making my own “dittos” back n the day. Luckily, we had a secretary in the office who ran them off for us, but if she was really busy, I would do my own sometimes. Teachers today have no idea how tough it was to prepare materials back then. But they have a lot of stuff to deal with that we didn’t have back then, so I’m not saying it’s better, just that one aspect is easier.
I leave my little tree up all year and the lights are my favorite part. I put white ones in the center and the colored ones on the outside. It glows!

My 3 C things:
Chocolate (dark, around 72%)

Cheese (have had to cut back, but it is one of my favorite foods)

Children: So grateful that I can spend so much time with my granddaughter. Being retired, I really miss “my kids” at school and so she helps to keep that connection to the uniqueness and wonder that children have.

1. Youngest Dd has a “C” name.
2. Chia seeds—I eat them most mornings
3. A Clean House—I did some extra cleaning yesterday and although I don’t enjoy cleaning I do like how it looks afterwards.
I keep meaning to try chia seeds! Are they flavorful, or is it all about what you add to them? Any tips for how to prepare them? 😃
